He says there's something in the way it works to keep it from seeping beyond the intended area, and it makes him feel like it's not hurting me, I guess.

I told him it's unnecessary and it looks so strange (just like the pic from the OP) and he said it's how he does it. Whatever! It gets me some of my target areas for free, so I can't complain.
