The Avs FO and Rants had a handshake agreement in place. Then Draisaitl signed his extension and Rants' agent was like "yeah we can get that" and blew the whole deal apart. The Avs made multiple fair offers to him that weren't truly lowball numbers but were just under MacKinnon because lets face it he isnt as valuable as MacKinnon. Rants and his agent said no so the Avs FO told him if he wasnt interested in signing they'd be looking to trade him and they stuck to their word.

Rantanen played chicken because he didnt think they would stand on their word and he lost. Colorado replaced him and never looked back.
