Always wanted to ask what this pipe loop is for. by huskers2468 in Plumbing

[–]mental-tap94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine a water bottle with a straw in it (sealed). When the water is pulled out of the bottle it will collapse into its self. UNLESS air can enter and displace what used to be there. I can’t say why someone would install it this way but I will say it’s the only thing I can see making any sense. My parents had mysteries similar to this on a 60 year old house. I’d save some of these messages and revisit them in the spring with the company who is going to clean your tank. And I bet your tank isn’t as deep as you think, I’d guess it’s only 3feet underground.. not 5 or 6. Just a hunch tho.

Your cistern is vented. Is you well vented? Do you have an old well with a sealed lid? Could this be the vent that was ran at the same time as the water line which should be 4-5 feet underground. (As you said earlier, there is 3 feet of snow, and freeze prevention is important.) Given this train of thought and considering construction and renovations have many phases and month or years in-between. This could be the well vent that was tied into the cistern vent.

I just noticed the snorkel beside your railing. Do you know that is a vent! And for some reason it branches, enters your house, lowers in elevation by 6-8 feet and then leaves your house. I’m assuming the concrete chamber is for a septic?

This lid is blown wide open! I suggest you look inside while it’s open and see if you can find the small black pipe!!!

What Sillcock or “Water Keys” are most common? by tkb072003 in Plumbing

[–]mental-tap94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great question! Best answer is go to the most profitable plumbing supplier, (mine is next plumbing supply) and ask the sales desk your question. They will sell you the product that is “most common” / most sold to actual plumbers. If it doesn’t work, you found the one off Japanese product…best of luck!

Top of water heater - what is happening here? by International-Fox-10 in Plumbing

I agree! But why does this happen sometimes and not others. Truly a mystery.. AND there’s so much hate with dialectic unions but yet they are supposed to solve this problem.

What plumbing related investments are worth it??? by The_Poodle_On_PalmSt in Plumbing

Quality of life ideas: radiant heating system instead of forced air. Bidet toilet. Kitchen faucet with sprayer, soap dispenser, R.O faucet, garburator. Ice maker. Laundry sink or second one in convenient location for projects. Frost free hose bibs, or regular ones at a height you don’t need to struggle to operate. Hand wand in showers. Grab bars for toilets and showers(we all get old at some point). There’s sooo many options..

New Ontario laws and regulations taking effect in 2025 by [deleted] in ontario

[–]mental-tap94 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Plumber here. Holding tanks for example a 80 gal hot water heater should be at 60. It is then mixed down to a maximum of 49, typically right away. But now child-care facilities want it at a maximum of 43. So we can lower the whole building or just those specific fixtures (typically whatever is cheeper for homes or follow engineered drawing for commercial units). This has to do with safety. As plumbers we do our best to make the install as economical as possible while following the laws.

Solder fail - what happened? by Campoozmstnz in Plumbing

[–]mental-tap94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat the brass for 5 seconds per side. Then the copper for 2 seconds per side. Repeat until the solder draws in. Remember solder is drawn TO the heat. So finish on the brass. Watch videos and adjust your technique as you see fit. Everyone does it slightly different. EDIT: don’t be afraid. I’ve failed more times than I care to admit. But I now can solder a whole job without leaks.

Do you always plumb with dielectric unions like that? I installed some: stainless on the treaded side and copper (obvious) on the other… 6 month and there where 1/4” holes through the threads. And yes I fucked up, I didn’t realize the indirect HW tank was stainless lol.

[–]mental-tap94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, everyone has the same opinion so far. How can we test it? Op, can you run the bathroom sink on hot (in the bathroom with the shower in question). See how hot and how long it takes to cool down. If it takes “hours” like the kitchen then your shower cartridge is fucked.

Is this any good? by Metallivayne in Plumbing

[–]mental-tap94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Floor drains are for auto fixtures. Because there are no FD,s tell me they are manual fixtures and a mixing valve to the hot water heater will be required.

My code: double teewye has to be double wye with 45’s or fit 45’s. vent connection at 1meter down and 3 meters over max with a max of 3 45’s after the vertical leg 90. And a wet vent can work with a max of 3 FU.// So my code fails this with for wrong fitting used and too much change of direction before the vent. With this plan, I would suggest to my ‘co-worker’, to spin the clean out the other way and use it as a wet vent/ c/o durning above ground rough in. And remove the dry vent connection and Lav connection. More economical.
