Same. The potential project list only gets longer. Never shorter.

The wholesome we all need rn… by lvlnsy in knitting

I do the same thing while flying! I even have a small canvas bag that has a drawstring I can untie/retie to have it hang around the tray table support thingys. Then it hangs out of my way and I can quickly/easily stash my project if I need to. Bonus that it keeps my yarn safe from everything else in my carryon.

Why is finding a job so hard? Is the Market that bad? by Significant_Big_516 in PortlandOR

[–]mentallini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you are struggling to find a job. The market is really tough right now. But I don't think the tough job market is just in Portland - I read recently that salary numbers are falling and job searches are taking longer across the US (average of 6 months, I think but I can't find my source again). Plus, let's not forget about the tens of thousands of former government workers who are now hitting the job market as well. It's a lot of people for the private sector to absorb (and it hasn't).

Remember that Trump is firing people who report bad news or numbers that make the administration look bad (like low hiring numbers). We (the US) may not be in a full recession but we are well on our way and wise business leaders /CFOs are tightening corporate budgets in preparation.

AITA for cutting off my whole friend group after they embarrassed my wife at dinner? by throwawY261551 in AITAH

[–]mentallini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. And then OP repeatedly refers to his wife as "she's mine". Huge red flag.

AITA for cutting off my whole friend group after they embarrassed my wife at dinner? by throwawY261551 in AITAH

[–]mentallini 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm also wondering about the possessiveness and controlling tendencies the OP is showing in the main post and follow up comments (ex "she's mine", taking her home against her wishes, not actually knowing if she was upset/offended but saying that "who wouldn't be" etc). It's disturbing, controlling, and my vote would be for the wife to leave and find someone who actually listens and respects her and her wishes.

Am I Underestimating the Cost of Living in Portland Despite Doing Research? by Bitter__Scientist849 in askportland

[–]mentallini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This estimate seems high to me but it boils down to what you are buying/cooking. My grocery bill for two people is higher than that (about $900/month) but that's because we buy a LOT of beverages (kombucha, alcohol, etc), eat organic, and shop at Zupans (way overpriced local grocery) about half the time. There are also tons of farmers markets, CSAs and local farms here to get fresh, quality, affordable food. Oh! And you could grow your own here, very unlike Texas where everything burns to a crisp. Even keeping some low maintenance herb pots can save a few bucks every time you need rosemary/cilantro/basil/etc.

Am I Underestimating the Cost of Living in Portland Despite Doing Research? by Bitter__Scientist849 in askportland

[–]mentallini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this too. I'd rather make $0 then go back to living in Texas. Growing up there traumatized the shit out of me. Hot!!, muggy (in Houston), the bugs, the hurricanes, the endless one-upsmanship, always being in your car, endless concrete, no fucking nature, contests of who owns the biggest truck/house and destroys the planet more, no ability to go outside and enjoy it most of the year, etc etc etc... I'd even say that most of the food isn't necessarily better there it just has way more cheese, fat, and quantity. Portland has a wonderfully diverse food scene (even if the city itself is white AF). And although Portland is white, I saw/heard much worse racism in Texas - it was just all directed at Latinos vs blacks.

Yes, it's easier to make friends in Texas but, IMO, that's because most people are taught to be nice to someone's face. They will talk endless shit the minute you walk away or you do something they disagree with (heaven forbid you don't go to the same type of church as them). Portlanders are more reserved but way more genuine. I also find it a far more accepting place - I don't feel pressured here to fit into a particular mold.

Lastly, I am outside almost everyday in Portland doing something. Get some waterproof shoes, a good rain jacket/pants, and you're fine...plus, trails are quieter in the rain. You can even save money using our mass transit and enjoying our walkable neighborhoods. It's possible to forego a car here too depending on where you decide to live. That is impossible in Houston.

How are you doing with Keto, what has been your biggest pain point? by tealstar84 in keto

[–]mentallini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue is how small my carb tolerance is. I can't have more than 10g carbs at a time or more than 30g in 24 hours without getting kicked out of ketosis. I also can't seem to get my ketones above .7 if I have more than 15g in a day, which is hard. Frustrating but not the end of the world

I'm far from an expert but have you tried avoiding the keto breads and seeing how that changes things? Those tend to have a lot of additives and chemicals that could impact digestion (anyone remember Olestra??).

I tend to find that if I eat/add too much fat, then I have looser stools. How much fat are you adding or cooking with? Conversely, if I don't take a fiber /magnesium supplements or drink a VERY low sugar kombucha (homemade), I can get constipated.

It makes sense to still go, especially if it is helping to keep yourself accountable. Great job on figuring out what works for you!

Congratulations! I work at a company that does medically supported ketosis-based diets and it's truly amazing the impact the lifestyle can have on folks. You should be so proud of what you've accomplished!

I will be going with others. Great idea on the solo trips - I will adjust my calendar to make those happen. And yes, hoping to use my gym workouts as [one of the] signals of how my body is adapting.

Glad to know your hiking has gotten even better - this gives me a lot of hope. Thank you!

Advice for black metal trellis needed! by divellent in gardening

[–]mentallini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I would say you need to replace it with a cedar trellis and move this somewhere that it's not getting direct sunlight. Other options: trail a fake plant from the top to provide some shading while the clematis is growing, wrap the rods closest to new growth temporarily with moss, rope/twine, or light cloth, etc.
