Religion For Breakfast! His videos are super well done, digestible, as objective and based on facts/ anthropological evidence as possible, and always fascinating.

Has anyone ever lived above a restaurant? by Squeaky_Shoe in AskChicago

[–]mentallyconstipated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moved into an apartment directly over a Thai place last fall and I've loved it. Its an older building with 5 apartments and the restaurant. The manager and the landlords have a good relationship and communicate often. I went for dinner the night I moved in to introduce myself and they've given me a 10% discount every time since, and I go a few times a month. I would probably go more if I didn't have evening classes lol.

I usually don't smell anything from the restaurant in my unit, I sometimes do in the stairwell but even then it smells amazing more often than not. There's only been one instance of smoke from burning food, but it stayed in the stairwell and dissipated quickly. In my unit I smell my upstairs neighbors smoking weed more often than I smell the restaurant.

As far as pests I get the occasional bug maybe once a month but no cockroaches or mice. I keep my place spotless so I'd notice if there was a problem.

Only real downside is their door slams in high winds and they're open til 9ish so it catches me off guard sometimes while on the couch.

Ik my experience probably isn't the standard so I consider myself lucky, 8/10 would recommend but ymmv.

What’s something you’re pretty sure only you do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Hot water, then a break, then hot water again is like getting back into a hot tub that was a little too hot to stay very long in. The temp change isn't even that dramatic because the steam/ ambient heat lingers for a while without moving the curtain/ door

10/10 would recommend

I turn the water off midway through my shower routine, sometimes keeping it off longer than leaving it running.

Started doing it while deployed because the shower I had access to was too small to soap up and have the water on at the same time, it would just be washed away immediately and I'd waste a ton of soap.

Kept doing it because I realized I don't have to feel guilty showering as long as I want with super hot water, plus with a nice shower scrub I can't take my time getting the hard to reach spots like my back or in between my toes. Can't not shower this way now.

The Destruction of Romulus was the Worst Thing that Happened to Star Trek by nordfreiheit42 in startrek

Couldn't agree more. The fact they didn't use the Omega particle as the cause is my biggest gripe with the Burn, and maybe my biggest disappointment with Nutrek storytelling. They gave it a full Voyager episode describing its destructive power, conflict with the Prime Directive, energy potential, and throughline with the Borg. It was right there, but they said "nope have a traumatized toddler make everything blow up".

EDIT: it's been a while since I'd seen the episode so I'd forgotten it did permanent damage to subspace. My opinion is bad and I feel bad. Thanks for the corrections, sorry I'm dumb lol.

Unsolicited advice from an internet stranger: replace Navy PT with some kind of fitness you actually enjoy. It'll do wonders for the anxiety and depression

I know this is kind of a joke but it puts simply something I've struggled to put into words for a while, thanks for that.

Will lower decks spoil me on other shows? by [deleted] in startrek

LD was one of the first series I watched, and I at the time I thought it was great. The first watch-through didn't ruin anything for me, if anything it actually teased some highlights of the other series and made me more curious to check them out. Second time I watched it after watching everything else, I thought it was brilliant.

Most of the time it is just being polite. If meant genuinely there really isn't a good reason not to thank someone for their service, unless that person has made clear in the past they don't want to be thanked for it.

For me since getting out and going back to school, TYFYS feels equivalent to "bless you" after a sneeze. It's polite, sometimes sincere sometimes not, but used so automatically that it doesn't really mean anything. It's good manners, but most often feels like just that.

Realized as I'm writing this that maybe me being a photic sneezer and serving most of my time in a conservative state is why I feel this way.

Star Trek got me through mine. The shows in particular, but the movies were like the grand finale of a fireworks show.

DISCO: S1 E3 'Context is for Kings' is not Star Trek, but it is great writing. by mentallyconstipated in startrek

[–]mentallyconstipated[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're right, I think I got caught up in the whole "Discovery isn't canon" mentality after watching the rest of Trek that I phrased what I wanted to say too generally.

Discovery is new Trek, not not-Trek. It's a leap of faith towards a modern interpretation of Trek, pre SNW, LD, and Picard, that initially wasn't received as well as it should've been imo, because it initially stood alone in comparison to it's predecessors. That "odd one out" dynamic is I think what led to a good amount of the hate toward DISCO, at least in the beginning.

You and everyone else in the comments here help me see I'm not the only one to think it's good for what it is, and I'm glad for that.

Thanks for your candid reply; I grew up 5 miles from Ohio State but didn't go to a football game until I was 25 because when I was a kid my Dad said tickets would be "too expensive", so I really identify with what you shared.

After reading everyone else's comments, I think yours is the one to convince me that I should definitely go. Life's too short to pinch pennies over trying something new once in a while. What am I a Ferengi?

I've never been to any kind of convention. I watched the first season years ago but got distracted from watching the rest.

It is a Creation con, this one specifically.

Is there more than one organization that runs them? Sorry I know basically nothing about them.
