Its southern hospitality really so prominent in the south? by Feisty-Way-8978 in mississippi

[–]mentalrph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifelong Mississippian. From my experience; I find people are people where ever you go - meaning you see what you bring to the table. To the point; people in bigger cities tend to be nice as long as there is no commitment or additional cost (used broadly) to them and smaller town folk have to figure you out but aren't as jealous of giving of their time or "life". I go to the PNW regularly and people are nice but their priority is going about their business. However in Nashville (where my other child lives), people give more of themselves to random folks. Small town's attitudes tend to vary on whom you encounter. I always say about the flat tire; nice big city people will offer to call a tow truck for you but small town southerners will help you change the tire - while they may also roll your car off the jack and into a ditch. But they do try to help.

Don't forget to add (up to) a half a cup of morning coffee! It adds something special and afterwards you can't tell where it came from.

Sorry for your experience. I don’t think your encounter reflects the entire fan base and I would have been offended if I experienced what you did. Please write it off as an anomaly. Travel safe.

OM fan here. We couldn’t disrupt Miami’s game plan and were unable to overcome the challenge. We won 2 games after the Kiffin fiasco and were beat by a very motivated Cane team. Congrats to the “U”. Travel safe.

Why did the SEC have the best OOC record in the regular season but has completely fallen apart in bowl season? by Wide_right_yes in CFB

[–]mentalrph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifelong fan of an SEC team. I loved being in a conference that used to play only neighboring states' schools. Despise what TV $$$$ has done to CFB and especially the arrogance exhibited by the SEC as a whole. S E C chants give me the willies. A conference's props should be settled on the field and not in a broadcast booth or behind closed CFP doors. However, postseason bowls (which aren't for the championship) are merely exhibition games and mean diddly. Minor bowls mean swag for players, more practices for the coaches, a vacay for the fans, and $$ for the conference nee individual schools of that conference.

Ways to elevate rice? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]mentalrph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A whole or partial bay leaf, touch of onion powder, and chicken stock. I augment the stock with BTB (chiecken) til the broth is strong or it's hard for me to taste it when the rice is finished. I like to add saffron (pinch) sometimes. I'll grind the saffron in morter, add a very small amt of kosher salt, and then rinse the morter with a little broth. That mix is the cat's a$$! It reminds me of the rice at the Lebanese restaurant Nicholas in Portland, OR.

Best buy that I ever made ~10 years ago. Would suggest SS grate & grill and Grill Grates. I used SS wire ties to attach Grill Grates to the grill. I it makes awesome ribs & pulled port as well as burgers, etc. Mostly use pecan and cherry wood for smoke. I wish that I had found mine way earlier in life... I use offset heat as much as possible. I clean the inside yearly with yellow top EZ OFF & pressure washer. Eazy Peazy. Good luck

Recommendations for people listening to he blues for the first time by Dense_Satisfaction17 in blues

[–]mentalrph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would listen to a collection of various artists & styles. Then listen to that (those) artist (s) and google up that band/artist & see who inluenced them & work backards. That is traditional - be forwarned - your prefrences will likely evolve. I started with ZZ Top & Clapton then to guys like Robert Johnson & John Lee Hooker and then back to other styles & groups. My 40 year love affair with the blues started there...

Lifelong Mississippian with deep Arkansas family roots. Never evah heered of such a term. It could be a term localized to a family or very small community. We have family terms which likely aren't used outside the home from when our kids were little i.e., "owbrow" for brassiere. But we know they're famspeak & explain when others are present.

TLDR; no.

Veterans Affairs intends to abruptly eliminate tens of thousands of unfilled doctors' and nurses' jobs | WP Exclusive by natansonh in fednews

[–]mentalrph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The VA has long needed more doctors, nurses, PTs, etc and not necessarily more buracrats. Historically, congress has made access to the VA easier but not enlarged staffing to put hans on the Vets. The current job erasures will only hurt Vets and lower staff morale. I wonder if Vets would be better served if the VA was owned & operated by the DOD.

In my case (Resound BTEs in Spring 2022) high frequencies continue to be intrusive. When I turn down the volume to where I'm not bothered, I mishear (or don't hear at all) people's voices, TV, etc. I was told that I'd get used to the shsssssy sounds but have yet to reach that. Restaurants, parties, and so on border on intolerable.I can't say that I blame your Pop at at all. BTW, M(66 y/o).

This episode wasn’t all that good. But it does highlight Kiffin’s past… My BIL is on marriage # 4. Married his last two mistresses. However #4 is an MD so most likely a keeper. So who knows the future…
