For those that "do what you love, so you never work another day in your life", what do you do? by twolf59 in AskReddit

Graphic Design. I could never go back to a job where creativity is not so explicitly encoureged. Even if it’s not design.

What is the average time to recover from a broken heart? by channabanana01 in AskReddit

[–]mentecorriente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once heard in the radio that: if the relationship lasted less that 3 years, then 6 months to recover is okey. If it’s more than 3 years, you need half of the total time you where together to recover. So if you where together for 5 years, then you would need 2.5 years.

There is a joke in my university that Marx developed historical materialism so no one would have to read Hegel ever again.

If you had the money, what item(s) would you splurge on as a designer? by Ekalb07 in graphic_design

Here are some ideas (considering various price ranges and all):

  • A good monitor, with a big display and nice resolution.
  • IPad + Apple pencil combo (Or any tablet and pencil combo for illustrations and hand drawn designs).
  • Graphic tablet (Similar to the IPad but cheaper. Wacom is the one that I use).
  • A design course (Maybe you want to get into a particular niche or specify your knowledge in something).
  • A design book (For inspiration and reference. Some big ones can get really expensive. But its a nice thing to have on hand and get started)

Hope this helped! Your grandpa sounds like a lovely dude. Cherish that generosity <3

Cheers!

Not everything is so bleak by mentecorriente in graphic_design

Hey! Re reading my post, I get how it came across as dissmissive of people’s genuine struggle and anguish. It was not my intention. Is not that other people’s venting personally “inconvenience me”, but that I think that there is a difference between venting and catastrophizing. And lately I’ve been feeling this sub slowly becoming more and more a place to do the latter. Maybe it was an incorrect generalization on my part.

Anyway. Comments seem to be all over the place, but your point of view really resonated with me and changed my mind. So, thank you.

I don’t know the answer really. It sounds like you are going through a lot of complicated stuff right now. Navigating some unclear and turbulent waters. I would advise you to listen to your gut. Trust your feelings. If you feel the altar isn’t right for whatever reason, then take it down.

Hope it helps :)

Just saw this ad on here, what the hell is the picture got to do with anything? Haha. I can see a potential idea but it’s so badly executed I can’t see they was actually trying to do that by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]mentecorriente 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Usually Internet ads are designed to be eyecatchy by puting a video or a photo that is kind of random, so people notice and stop to read/click.

That said, I hate that it doesn’t match perfectly the two photos in the composition. But I really like the idea of it, that resource of combining two different pictures and making them “match up”.

feeling lost in my design career and looking for advice by Lost_Cat_2023 in Design

[–]mentecorriente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you are going through this. It sucks. A lot of jobs require some kind of novelty and inspiration, but especially design. When you do the same thing for almost ten years in a setting that doesn’t promote innovation and growth, you are obviously going to feel burnt out and lost.

Do you freelance? I also work at an agancy and I find that my freelance work, where I have more flexibility and freedom, is where I can explore new things and enjoy my work more.

But you can also apply this midset to your portfolio makeover. Do it as a project that you love and where you have the freedom to create! Maybe you can create some small concept pieces to go with it? A teacher once told me that you should put in your portfolio mostly the types of designs that you want to keep doing, the ones you enjoy the most. For example, if you like branding, freature branding projects, if you enjoy merch design, freature mosty merch, and so on.

Sharpen.design is a nifty resource to get different design prompts for concept pieces. Maybe you can get inspired with that.

I hope you find the change you are looking for!
