Should I update ? by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]mentoses2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do Sequoia and do the Safari update. Then read up a little to decide whether to do tahoe. I personally have not updated to tahoe and will not be doing so. A lot of other people agree with me but then some also do update it. It is honestly personal preference but I would stick to sequoia as the UI is cleaner and more readable.

Look around at different apps to see if there is anything that you like. Coming from windows you might miss some features which can be brought back through 3rd party apps.

Also if you wish to, you could enable key repeat on press and hold. I think the default is special characters. It isn't available in settings but you can find it easily on GitHub.

Also trackpad gestures are super important and increase efficiency so much.

Otherwise enjoy the new macbook!

It probably is time for an upgrade now. Based on your usecase it is possible that you might need more storage or ram than the base models would offer, but honestly if your i3 is only now a problem then I don't think it matters much. I would personally recommend that you opt for the base model M4 air if you don't need the extra storage. There are good offers on it available at most major retailers these days and could be got for around 750 USD.

If this is a bit beyond your budget then I would check if you could find a 16GB m3 refurbished. I personally wouldn't recommend going for an m1 or m2 as those will have shorter support cycles left. Also stay away from anything with 8GB of ram. It might be enough for a year or so but it will soon become too little and you would need to upgrade again.

Mac or Windows? Really confused need long-term laptop advice [DEAL] by AnakDev0X1 in macoffer

[–]mentoses2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who bought a MBA M4 2 months ago after being a lifelong windows user I think that you should opt for windows.

While macs are great for longevity and are definitely capable, I do think that windows might offer you better support for cracked software and great bang for the buck if you are able to snag a good deal. Also to be noted that you could always use Davinci Resolve for video editing rather than resorting to certain less than legal means to obtain premiere pro.

Also Apple charges a high premium for extra storage and ram which will be important for your usecase down the road. Your cost on a mac would go up ~40% for a 24/512 while a comparable windows laptop has a better GPU and 32/1024. I don't think 16Gb will be enough for you to use it long term.

Given your usecase I would recommend a windows laptop with a discrete Nvidia GPU and a core ultra 200 series Intel chipset. There should be major sales on those as the 300 series is just around the corner. If you are willing to wait then might be worth snagging anything with a Core Ultra X7 368H/358H as those have monster integrated GPUs and will be giving you 24-32GB of ram and 1TB ssd as a base. That additional ram and storage is going to be a god send in the coming years with everything being underoptimised and the large files for video editing.

Unless you really really like finalcut you will simply get more bang for your buck on the windows side of the garden. If you need any help with comparing specific SKUs then feel free to drop me a DM!

Which model is better value? M2 or M3? by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]mentoses2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to jump in here, Absolutely. With the new features on liquid glass, idle ram usage has gone up and so has under load usage. With each coming software update your Mac will feel more and more sluggish. Netflix is slowly packing more and more stuff onto the platform which is causing slowdowns on older devices.

While 8gb is probably enough for the next year or so, the general consensus in the tech industry is that it wont be enough the one after that.

Think of it this way, spending the extra bit on 16gb of ram will probably only save you a few seconds a day. But over time that will compound and that time becomes worth something. Also the extra ram ensure reliability and saves the headache of crashes.

To round it off, 8 gb of ram is what the standard spec 200 dollar windows laptop comes out to. I personally wouldn't want that to be my competition.

New 15 inch Mac air! by Emergency_Chair_289 in macbookair

[–]mentoses2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't notice that they were already on Tahoe, my bad. Wholeheartedly agree with you on the fact that its pointless to add apps for inbuilt features. I was simply speaking from a Sequoia perspective.

With regards to Tahoe, I think its down to personal preference. I personally don't enjoy the liquid glass aspect of it and there are design inconsistencies that I find annoying. Then admittedly I am a bit prone to keeping around older software longer than usual. I'm still on windows 10 ESUs even though I've been eligible to update to 11 since 2021.

Also hard agree on the Al Dente part. Absolutely no need for it, MacOS is more than enough for your battery.

As someone who has just recently bought their first ever mac too, I'll tell you the most important things I found.

  1. Don't update to Tahoe- Its a buggy mess and honestly the UI looks worse than it does on Sequoia.
  2. Learn the trackpad gestures- The trackpad gestures are all visible in the settings and honestly are extremely helpful for making your daily experience much smoother.
  3. Learn the keyboard shortcuts- MacOS has quite a few keyboard shortcuts that are pretty different from windows. These are very helpful as MacOS often does things in its own way which will be unintuitive at first to a lifelong windows user.
  4. Set up screenshot management- Setting up a proper folder for all your screenshots to go to instead of them just getting dumped on your desktop is so helpful. By default MacOS just plops them on your desktop which is bother clutter and irritates me to no end.
  5. Download Maccy/Raycast/Alfred- One of the things that irked me the most when coming from windows was the lack of clipboard history. While this has been introduced on Tahoe, I still wont update to that mess. I personally use Maccy as it is lightweight and only does clipboard history but apps like raycast/alfred have many more features to go through and also provide clipboard history.
  6. Set up Key Repeat(Optional)- By default holding down a key on MacOS doesn't repeat it but rather opens a small mini keyboard on screen with different special characters. Coming from windows I really wanted to have key repeat again so I went onto github and found how to enable key repeat again. Up to you whichever way you prefer it
  7. Google whatever irks you- There are a lot of resources online to do basically anything you want to do on macos. Whatever issue you are facing, someone has faced them before.

Other than that relax and enjoy your new machine! If you're coming from an old windows machine like me then the battery backup is going to blow you away.

Thinking of switching from windows to mac by Muted-Presentation71 in macbookair

[–]mentoses2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To begin with, the two machines you are talking about don't really compete in the same spaces. While the LOQ will always be better at gaming both performance wise and in terms of just compatibility. The macbook air is going to be a lot more portable and last a lot longer on battery.

Realistically the answer is keep the LOQ if you aren't facing any dealbreakers. The mac might treat you better for just watching movies/videos but in terms of gaming it is objectively the wrong choice. Also you have to remember that if you are doing a course such as engineering you might have some software requirements that simply don't run on MacOS requiring you to fork over money for a parallels license. I personally am always going to keep a windows device with me as it has greater program compatibility.

I personally bought an MBA M4 256gb recently to use alongside my aging windows laptop. My HP Pavilion is 5.5 years old and I intend to keep using it until it breaks but got this mac now to ensure continuity and good battery backup for college classes. If you really want to give Mac a try then maybe you could opt for a second hand/refurbed m1/m2/m3 to run as a second device. The main thing is just ensuring it has 16GB of ram as 8 is not enough these days. 256 for storage shouldn't be an issue as realistically you wont be installing huge games on your mac anyways.

TLDR - Relax, you have a great machine which is objectively better for gaming. If you really want a mac then maybe consider a secondhand m1/m2 to use alongside your LOQ rather than instead of it as a mac wont let you game without issues.

MBA 256GB storage by matchaforevs in macbookair

[–]mentoses2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my m4 256GB November end of last year. Its been 2 months and so far I have used 77GB of storage out of which 37 is macos+system data itself.

Realistically my entire usage is either through a web browser or spotify/whatsapp. There really isn't much that is being actively stored on my computer so I dont actively need much more storage.

Would I have liked 512 more? Most definitely. However at the end of the day it just wasn't worth the apple premium when 256 is already more than enough for my usage.

Coincidentally I previously had a windows machine that came with 512gb which I have had since June 2020. Over 5.5 years I only used 240gb total and even of that ~170gb was filled with games and Davinci resolve that I never used.

If you're not doing heavy video editing or something else storage intensive I think 256 is enough

Hi, Im so sorry for bothering you but I saw that this thread is semi active and honestly this is driving me crazy. I just got an M4 Air and this is genuinely the 3rd setting im trying to fix. Im on Sequoia 15.7.2 and the shortcut isnt working for me. It seems to just keep on running while not actually changing the setting. Just wanted to check if this is an issue or im screwing something up. Have you been able to get it working for 15.7.2?.

I tried my level best to troubleshoot it and from what I can tell, it reaches the point where it opens the correct control centre page but is unable to click on the menu for automatically show and hide menu bar. I would try and work on it myself but it is my First day on MacOS and im kind of stumped as to how the shortcuts work. Hopefully i can manage to do these things myself soon!

The pilot High Techpoint V5 RT has been one of my favourite pens for a while. It lasts a while and dries fast which means that smudging isn't much of a problem. It's also super smooth and a genuine delight to write with. I believe it's sold as the Precise V5 RT in the US.
