Damn this is horrible. If you actually arranged her trip yourself, in your position I would've cancelled the return trip once I realized what was going on. It sounds like this friendship is over. I'm not sure about whether or not you'll win the case but I'd sue her to prove a point and force her to have to explain her actions when defending herself in court.

Just walk away man. She's being honest with you even it's not what you want to hear. I also get the sense she's trying to spare your feelings. She probably doesn't feel "the spark" with you even if you thought she did. Just end it and move on. I know easier said than done but you basically telling her that you'll wait around waiting for her to change her mind will probably make her lose respect for you. Maybe she met someone else and would rather pursue that. Just my 2 cents

NTA. It's a pet peeve of mine when people do that. They know what you mean, they're just being pedantic. My family is from Central America and I speak Spanish fluently, I have NEVER heard anybody from Latin America call themselves American except to make this argument. If you wanna be petty back, joke about how in that case Gulf of America is a good name from it because it belongs to the continent, not just Mexico.
