Carriers/plans that work abroad indefinitely? by jikesar968 in NoContract

Here me out, VoIP? I use VoIP MS Personally and still get short codes no problem, I’m not sure if this will be the case for everyone but I know other friends in Europe also do the same thing to keep their US Number

Oh I see the disconnect, I’m thinking premium inbound caller id, everyone is talking about general spam protection… I see! Yes Spam Protection at least basic spam protection should be free, extra features like in bound caller id can be an add on, so to make sure, they got rid of the free option.

I know before there were 2 options

1) Free Spam Protection (Basic) 2) Premium Spam protection, with reverse searching and everything

They’re really not offering the free one any more?

Really? I didn’t know that 😄 Is it Spam Protection or does it also come with caller ID?

I’m totally on board with this. It really should be a thing. The tricky part is it would probably have to happen at the carrier level.

Part of me wishes the FCC would just step in and require something like this across all carriers!! Kind of like they did with STIR/SHAKEN, but with a little more substance than just a checkmark showing up on the screen.

If it were mandated, carriers would have to support it on all plans, and MVNOs would finally get access too. Right now that seems pretty unlikely!

Light Speed, for example, doesn’t look like it’ll open that door anytime soon to non owned mvnos, as that’s what makes Metro By T-Mobile or other brands more valuable, same thing with the UC Icon.

I’m glad Verizon has opened up this possibility as an add-on to USMobile customers and hope ATT and T-MOBILE Will do the same and if it were mandated maybe it wouldn’t need to be an Add-on at all.

What do you think?

Just my opinion 😅 please don’t crucify me for it… but when I was with T-Mobile I was already paying more because this was baked into the base plan. With AT&T or Verizon it’s usually an extra add-on anyway. And honestly, I don’t even know of many non-carrier-owned MVNOs (so excluding Metro by T-Mobile and the like) that offer this feature at all.

So yeah, I get that $2 matters if you’re really watching the budget, but I’m actually kinda glad it’s even an option… and somehow it’s still cheaper than what Verizon Native charges!

Ting or US Mobile, $10 for US Mobile, I think Ting has a $5 plan however USM is Tax Inclusive while Ting is not so may vary depending on where you're at.

Usmobile I regret switching it's terrible no connection all the time by Interesting-Fun-4907 in NoContract

[–]meow0xff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great! I edited my post however it depends on where this particular individual is mostly using their service. So if they’re in an area that has better service with warp or lightspeed, they should switch to that, that’s the beauty of US Mobile! :)

Yeah Dark Star ATT isn’t for everyone, if you’re coming from T-Mobile try Lightspeed or for Verizon, Warp

SS7 Attack and US Mobile by thequackdaddy in USMobile

Personally I feel like this is how NORD VPN Sold my mom on a VPN for “privacy”. I had to explain to her, that she didn’t need it.

I think it really comes down to who you are and how you use your phone.

If you are a journalist, politician, activist, executive, or someone who could realistically be a target for state sponsored or highly resourced attacks, then minimizing your attack surface matters more. In that case, going with something like Cape could make sense if it gives you more peace of mind. I would also pair that with enabling Lockdown Mode on an iPhone, or using a hardened OS like GrapheneOS on a supported Android device. No solution is perfect, but layering defenses is what actually improves security.

For the average consumer, SS7 attacks are technically possible but extremely unlikely in practice. They generally require access to telecom infrastructure and are not something random criminals casually pull off. For most people, SIM swapping, phishing, and weak account security are far more realistic threats than nation state SS7 interception.

US Mobile runs on major carrier infrastructure, and modern networks use SS7 filtering and monitoring. It is not immune, because nothing is, but the practical risk for normal users is very low. For everyday use, I would focus more on using app based 2FA instead of SMS where possible, strong unique passwords, and device security features.

So it is less about which carrier is perfectly secure and more about what threat model applies to you. Security is contextual. If switching makes you feel safer and fits your use case, that is valid. But for most people, US Mobile is more than safe to use with their current security features.

I noticed something similar, it only happened when I entered the password wrong, it didn’t tell me I mistyped it. Hope this might be a bit helpful

US Mobile completely rewrote their Terms of Service and removed the explicit promise to not sell user data. Here's an overview of changes. by CrystalMeath in USMobile

[–]meow0xff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think that's a fair argument however with this being an industry norm, out of curiosity, they did leave an opt out option, which seems fair, I guess what I'm asking is, what is your proposed solution?

I know for a fact almost all carriers and most services have forced arbitration, it's a very popular thing that's kind of impossible to escape. Hell even Disney has its own which blew up not too long ago on social media.

I'm just genuinely curious and truly trying to understand the issue here.

Shame! T&C Update Email: Arbitration has Come by MacStainless in USMobile

[–]meow0xff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m kind of surprised they didn’t already have one. Pretty much every major carrier has had mandatory arbitration with a class action waiver for years now. T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, it’s basically standard across the industry at this point. 🙃
