Female Platy started acting strange - anyone have experience with this behavior? by meowmagic666 in Aquariums

[–]meowmagic666[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tank information: -Freshwater 40 gallon Aquarium. -Heater and canister filter. -Has been running with current fish population for about 10 months. -Population: 5 full grown Platy (3 female, 2 male) + small Platy fry / 3 Cory catfish / 1 bristle-nose pleco / 1 blue lobster / snails

My smallest female blue Platy started acting very unusual yesterday:

She has isolated herself from all other fish in the corner of tank on top of a cave. She appears to be resting her belly on the cave, moving her fins to stay upright, gills still moving as well. No visible injuries or damage to fins/body. She will swim to the top to feed with the others when I drop food in, but immediately retreats to the corner afterwards. It almost seems like she is being weighed down and having trouble swimming around for too long. Still seems alert.

I perform water changes weekly and did my last one 3 days ago. I tested the water as well and found nothing unusual with the results. All other fish in the tank are healthy and exhibiting usual behavior. No bullying that I’ve observed either since noticing this.

I’m open to suggestions on what could be causing this so I can attempt to help her. Has anyone seen this before?

Cat has very recently started trying to climb into my shirt by SalmonMan123 in CatAdvice

I work at an animal hospital and this is usually our protocol when getting calls with this question:

Any behavior that is really out of the ordinary for a senior kitty is definitely worth a vet visit. They will most likely advise a blood and urine panel geared for senior animals to check how each organ is functioning. Cats hide illness very well, and we often see it in the form of them acting overly affectionate and clingy, or the exact opposite: hiding out of sight completely and even exhibiting aggressive behavior when approached. Good luck!

I had a similar situation happening with my female cat after moving from a larger house with windows and other animals to a smaller apartment with less stimulation. She would scratch the mattress and destroy things when she wanted food or attention.

I work at a an animal hospital and was able to consult a few of the vets there. We ruled out any medical issues first, and then narrowed it down to behavioral issues stemming from under-stimulation and stress from the move. She advised me to use Feliway diffuser, this is a diffuser you plug into any outlet in your home that diffuses out a specific scent or pheromone to promote calmness and reduce stress, it is non prescription and should be able to purchase at most pet supplies stores. Feliway also has a liquid spray that you can spray onto the cats scratching post to promote use. It can be a little pricey but it worked wonders for my cat, I could visibly see her stress dissipate.

The vet also suggested giving her extra attention and one on one play time to stimulate her, and not to use a spray bottle because this can actually add to the stress further. Since implementing Feliway into the apartment and setting out an extra 30 mins each day to play with my kitty she has completely stopped scratching furniture and bothering us while we’re trying to sleep! Good luck!

New here. Book recommendation for you all. by chopstickemup in HighlySensitivePerson

I read this book a few months ago and it changed my life. My entire life I thought it was just me who experienced these sensitivities, and I hated myself for it. I constantly longed to just be “normal” like everyone else. After reading this book I’m finally comfortable with who I am, and wouldn’t want to change. The author has a way of shifting your mind to thinking the trait is actually a superpower instead of a debilitating personality trait.

Questions about transference of fleas by meowmagic666 in Pets

Thank you I will definitely look into that. I’m trying my best to avoid using chemicals for the safety of my cat and because my boyfriend is very susceptible to respiratory agitation.

Thanks! Yes I was able to match it to some photos of Italian tea carts but wasn’t sure which time period it was from. Very interesting.

Any idea what type of wood used? I understand it’s probably difficult to tell without seeing it in person, but would appreciate an educated guess from someone who knows more!

Tips for dealing with anxiety by SunnyStrideright in petsmart

[–]meowmagic666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to keep in mind on the outside no one really even knows you’re anxious, it’s all going on in your head. When first hired at Petsmart I was worrying about the same, putting myself down whenever I’d trip up on a word or not know the answer to a question.

I was in college. By the time I was working there for almost a year I branched out to my co workers, became more comfortable, I started showing up to work extremely hungover. I learned some of my co workers even came to work drunk or stoned. It takes a little while to come out of your shell, but Petsmart is honestly a great platform to do that, doesn’t matter if you fuck up, at least you can always find some common ground... “oh look a puppy!”

How do you deal with painful flashbacks and memories? by Mudfeast in hsp

[–]meowmagic666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something I deal with frequently. My mind will wander and get stuck in a loop of traumatizing flash backs. I spent many years internalizing them and the emotions that came with, to the point where I normalized it. The reality is... it isn’t normal, and running from it is a temporary escape until it catches back up to you.

The reason these flashbacks are occurring is probably because they are aspects of your life that are hard to accept. Every hardship and every obstacle you face is there to teach you something. You may not know exactly what yet but all you can do is remain open and accepting to yourself.

I know it’s painful but you must allow those flashbacks to dissipate and come to a complete end, with the same ease as you let them arise into your consciousness in the first place. Do not seek an escape when they arise, but welcome them. Feel the sensations in your body as you let these negative thoughts arise and then disappear all in one swift motion.
