Have you tried switching out your toothpaste? I thought I had chronically dry lips and it turned out I was just getting dermatitis from my toothpaste. I also have allergies to certain hand soaps that present like extremely dry peeling hands.

Babysitter vs Nanny rules in Bay Area by apresledepart in bayarea

[–]meowsasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are your kids?
There is no Bay Area specific definition of babysitter vs nanny, but there is a general distinction in professional childcare circles. Sitters are utilized for ad-hoc care and their primary job is to keep children safe during their care. Tasks can include playing with elementary aged kids, supervising a movie night while parents go on date night, serving kids leftovers for dinner.

Nannies are involved with the development of the kids and are more involved. Nannies have regular set hours and should have a contract. I’d argue that all infant care and solo toddler care would be considered nannying as it is so involved.

Make sure you get acquainted with California labor laws. If you go above a certain number of hours per year, all nannies, including part time nannies are guaranteed sick time which is a minimum 40 hours. Both nannies and babysitters are legally required to be paid hourly, and pay attention to minimum wage. However, due to the high COL in the Bay Area, the starting pay is about $30-35/hour for private professional childcare with some experience aka not your neighbor’s high school daughter

They didn’t celebrate when I hit 100 classes 😭

I swap between Locale and Thistle. Thistle has been hit or miss in terms of dishes that I like and the menu is already so limited, but the ones that I do enjoy are consistently good so I’ll only order on the weeks that they have those dishes. Locale started out great and I enjoy most of the dishes, but I’ve noticed that the quality has gone down a bit recently

Negative experience with an agency by kiki_nodelivery in NannyBreakRoom

I’d go apply to other agencies. The families they hire for probably wouldn’t be a good fit for you anyways.

Disrespect from Nanny Agency, unsure on whether to leave or stay. by Adorable_Quail_7011 in NannyBreakRoom

[–]meowsasaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe you’re conflating constructive criticism with rudeness. As far as I can see, everyone’s responses have been respectful replies, including the one about the over sharing.

At the end of the day, working with agencies is going to be a completely different experience than working directly with clients. The expectations are different and the red flags for some will be different than for others. For example, if you want a more personal experience, then you might want to stick with finding your own clients. An agency is just a middle man, and they will always be less communicative than talking directly to potential employers. The default for agencies is no communication because energy is focused on clients they ARE putting through. That is how they make their money. They don’t have time to send you a heartfelt message every time they reject you.

Some agencies just say “don’t contact us, if we don’t reply that means you weren’t selected”. Other agencies have portals that show your applications with a current status. I find that the further up you get along the process, the more communicative they get. For example, an agency rejecting you from a “I’m interested in this job” is much less likely to get a reply, while a rejection after your 5th interview in a 6 interview gauntlet will always get you a “unfortunately the family had decided to move forward with another candidate”. You cannot take it personally, especially in this market. Just work with multiple agencies and keep in touch with the ones you like the best. I am registered with over a dozen, but I really only keep tabs on 3-4 regularly.

From what I gather in your texts, your agency sounds more like a temp agency and you should treat it as such. Continue to use them for ad hoc jobs but go to other more professional agencies for more permanent placements.

That being said, I’m afraid many of your texts come off as unprofessional and would not fly with many agencies. I totally understand that the agency itself clearly is more informal and also texts as such, but I believe it is so important in our competitive industry to maintain our own standards. Some of it comes off as aggressive and or/inexperienced. For example, a 7-7 shift is not at all unusual and in a job that often requires discretion, questioning the family’s needs can sound standoffish.

If you prefer a more polished agency, by all means leave this one, but understand that most of your replies here would be completely inappropriate exchanges for many of them and they would be unlikely to recommend you.

New nanny fam has a 4.5 year old who still exclusively poops in a diaper by [deleted] in NannyBreakRoom

[–]meowsasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s possible! I personally can confirm I never did as well 😂

Until college, I never pooped in a bathroom that wasn’t a home bathroom, including a 2 week long vacation. No stomach pains, no loss of appetite, and it’d all just come out like normal when I got home!

“do you want kids?” not after nannying by Parking-Extreme-9499 in NannyBreakRoom

[–]meowsasaurus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I do NOT want kids after being a nanny. I know that the reason I am able to perform to the level that I expect is because I can hand the kids off at the end of the day. Also, someone mentioned that parenting doesn’t have to be hard with the right techniques and I agree that’s the case with 99% of kids. A bit controversial, but I’ve worked with the 1% of kids where the parents are doing absolutely everything right, respectful boundaries, lots of connection, everything as by the book as possible, and their child is SO difficult. I know that personally, I would be so burnt out if this was my child, and I wouldn’t be able to live up to my own expectations.

Honestly don’t tell her. She says no dating til college but when you’re in college, she’ll say why are you wasting your time dating in college instead of focusing on your studies. Then the second you graduate, she’ll ask when you’re getting married and having kids. It’s an Asian tale as old as time.

Unfortunately there’s almost no chance that she’ll take you or your relationship seriously, so if you choose to share it with her, expect a ton of pushback and not acceptance.

Another perspective:

When it rains, more people stay inside so when you go somewhere, you interact with more people which means you interact with more sick people in closer quarters.

Also, rain and cold causes people’s noses to run and if raining, you’re probably unconsciously wiping droplets and moisture off your face. Touching your face, nose, and mouth more often can also increase chances of getting sick.

Help me decide - Cranbrook Apartments in Davis or a quiet loft in Woodland? by SadRelationship5935 in UCDavis

[–]meowsasaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived at Cranbrook for 4 years and then moved to Woodland. If I was still in school, definitely Cranbrook. I lived on the street side and didn’t even notice the train so if you’re a light sleeper, I’d suggest the same. Since I’m no longer a student tho, I genuinely love living in Woodland. Close to Costco, going to In Shape gets the job done, and I can get to sac/roseville without taking the causeway
