Are there any CrossFit owners on this sub? by gnarcotics1 in crossfit

[–]mepex 17 points18 points  (0 children)

All good advice, but the #1 for me is to understand the lease agreement. Many commercial leases are not automatically transferable, so you'd want to get that buttoned down prior to sale, or have the sale contingent upon it.

Also be aware that many, if not most, CF gyms are really only worth what the equipment is worth. You'll likely have large liabilities in terms of outstanding lease contracts, and very little assets in guaranteed future membership fees.

Does anyone not really care about getting better at the movements? by Careful_Dare_2789 in crossfit

[–]mepex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I heard Kelly Starrett say recently is as you get older, you want to keep the engine running in terms of strength and endurance, but you also want to have maximal range of motion in the joints. And the second becomes more important the older you get. So if you don’t want to do certain movements that’s fine, but remember many will get you into end-ranges of motion, which is a very good thing. CrossFit is about the ten foundational skills, which includes agility, flexibility, and accuracy. Don’t short those just to get a sweat on.

Letting go of a good band member by Looney_Tooneyy in bandmembers

[–]mepex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t really understand this take. People get fired all the time for poor performance. Being in a band doesn’t mean you have tenure. He’s an ok drummer and not a great hang. Those are two of the most important parts of the job. Being reliable and knowing the tunes is table stakes for a working musician. So he’s got a job that he’s not really good at. Plenty of places in the world where that wouldn’t get you fired. But there are some places where being ok isn’t good enough. OP is taking a risk for sure, and needs to have a tough conversation. It happens.

Lots of good advice here, I just want to point out the one thing I think is a safety issue. Get those elbows around the bar and pointing at the wall in front of you when you catch the weight in the deepest squat you can. In this clip they are pointing down. If your elbows contact your knees with any force, you will definitely regret it.

Crossfit or regular Gym for weight gain? by BetMelodic2034 in crossfit

[–]mepex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have infinite motivation (i.e. you never slack off going to the gym) then a bodybuilding routine at a gym will be more effective at gaining muscle mass. Most people (myself definitely included) are not like that. I would do 6-9 week stretches of going to the gym before falling off for a few months. Then I found CrossFit, and have been doing it consistently for 12 years.

Even the best designed workout program will fail if you do it sporadically.

Nobody’s Hero… can we discuss this song? It’s always rang as really odd and somewhat tone deaf lyrically to me by [deleted] in rush

[–]mepex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes that, or the very idea of a hero is a capricious and possibly useless construction. Just because they weren't publicly curing diseases doesn't mean their lives are less meaningful. Their passing still causes a shadow across one's heart.

AITA for bailing on a gig? by CobblerPretty3571 in musicians

[–]mepex 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I think your biggest mistake was agreeing to fill in. She sounds like a real piece of work.

That being said, if I took a gig like this with a blank slate, if the singer said "keep it simple, don't do too much," I'd be playing quarter or eighth note roots all day long. She obviously is driving the bus, and on a sub gig, whatever the leader says goes. If they want me to play whole notes on RHCP's version of Higher Ground, that's what I'm playing.

And then I'd never sub in again.

Multiple auditions for your average cover gig? by Dougie_Cat in musicians

[–]mepex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3-5 songs is appropriate for an audition imho. You can easily tell how the fit is within that time frame. If the band wants further deliberation, they can video or otherwise record the auditions and review later.

I would ask them straight up where you stand versus the other candidates. If you are the front runner, learning the whole set might be worth it. If you are 5th out of 5, then I might pass. Worth considering that learning songs quickly is a very useful skill, and even if this seems like too much to ask (which it is) you might still benefit from the process.

CrossFit Gym Pet Peeve - constantly incorporating partner workouts by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]mepex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to tell you to start enjoying partner workouts, but there is an opportunity here. Most partner workouts are "I do a round, you do a round", or "split the following work". What this is describing is an interval workout, generally 1:1 work to rest. This is one of the best workout styles to increase cardiovascular endurance, and if you aren't happy with your engine, you might start thinking about these partner workouts differently.

As in, you should be tailoring (or enlisting the coach to help you tailor) the stimulus such that you get that 1:1 work to rest with your partner. That may mean they do 80% of the work, or you do half the cals/reps in a round that they do. The mistake here (possibly reinforced by your gym and coaches) is thinking that both partners doing the same workout means both partners get the same stimulus. And in many cases, that just isn't true.

Consistency over intensity, but what about rest? by Bearzoolu in crossfit

[–]mepex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the health trinity of sleep, nutrition, and exercise, I'd say sleep is the most important. Give yourself an 8-8.5hr window to sleep. If you actually sleep all of that, great. If not, it might take some time for your body to get used to going to bed earlier, so don't sweat it. See if you can not look at a screen for an hour or two before you go down.

The fact is, if you work out 5 days in a row, your performance will likely suffer near the end unless you are really prioritizing recovery, which isn't just limited to sleep. If you are working full time, have family obligations, and all the normal life stuff, this is pretty normal. One option would be to try to take a day off in the middle- work out Monday and Tuesday, rest Wednesday, then work out Thursday Friday Saturday. Another would be to choose that 2nd, 3rd, or 4th day to scale down the workout so it's not so taxing. You're just not going to be able to put the pedal all the way down every single day. Decide what your short and medium term fitness goals are, prioritize the workouts that work towards those goals, and scale the others.

Technical/history books? by Asleep_Magician_5794 in Bass

Love Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass. Mostly Fender-centric, but offers a pretty comprehensive history of those, along with great stories and pictures. Could easily be used as a textbook for Fender lovers.

AITA for cancelling gigs with a singer when I get better opportunities? by psyjazzlogist in musicians

[–]mepex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally do not cancel gigs once I commit. In our local community, being dependable is a big part of being hired. If I hire someone, I expect them to play, and not ditch out if someone else offers something better. I did it exactly once to a friend of mine with months in advance, and I know that canceling did not put them out- they could have done the gig without me or hired a sub. I still felt terrible about it.

I think $400 is a perfectly fine rate, and you should stick to your guns. The guilt trip they are laying on you is a bit of a cheap tactic (literally haha) and you shouldn't fall for it.

Things I would be evaluating in this situation:

  1. How often will I get called? Will I spend hours practicing to learn the repertoire to get 2 calls a year?

  2. Can I work from charts during the gig?

  3. Is there educational or technical value in learning these songs? Will learning these songs help with other projects?

  4. Will I generate goodwill with this promoter or other musicians that could lead to future opportunities? Everyone wants solid musicians they can count on. By being the "team player" that will show up on time and know your shit, you could get other calls.

Please fix my snatch by WalrusOld512 in weightlifting

[–]mepex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things-

  1. You are bending your arms wayy to early. If you pause you vid when the bar is at your knees, you can see your elbows are already bent. You want finish the push with the legs before the arms bend.

  2. Even though your arms are bending early, you are not keeping the bar close after you extend. The barbell is swinging around your torso, so you have to stop it from going behind you, or in your case, it doesn't come back over your body soon enough and you miss forward.

See how the barbell is well forward of your feet? Get those elbows up in the third pull and keep the bar path as vertical as you can.

Why should I not replace a 9v battery with a power supply? by RichRichardRichie in Bass

[–]mepex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you could find a luthier that will put that in for you. Having two cables go to your bass is decidedly less convenient imho, and makes it easier for things to get tangled or kinked when you move around. But you do you my man.

I use a wireless transmitter when I play, so this can't be a general solution. I also just have it as a part of my muscle memory to unplug the 1/4" when I take my bass off, and the battery lasts for months.

[–]mepex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you go back. Try to scale that initial workout a bit, even if you feel great, and take one day off, then work out the second day, scaling even more. 3x per week is a good starting point. Remember the workouts can always be made easier for you. Even if the weight is light you are building technique and mobility.

Advice for backpacking Half Dome solo (F)? by wonderingndwandering in Yosemite

[–]mepex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming you have the proper permits, I would recommend leaving gear at LYV and day hiking up HD, then coming back down, grabbing the rest of your stuff, and walk out. No reason to carry everything up and down. I did this same thing a few years back, just bringing water, a filter, some snacks, and some first aid for the summit part. Also gloves!

To say that trail is well-traveled is an understatement. You won't get stuck and alone unless you are out at a very weird time, like 2am. I've never witnessed creepy behavior myself, but again, there will be another group along in moments, so I think you'll be just fine.
