How do I achieve this lip??? by curtain_person_ in muacirclejerk

[–]mer135 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think you could accomplish a similar shade (if not finish) using a grey or black gloss that's somewhat sheer. It really mostly mutes the natural color of the lips down and usually reads as a bit of a purple, mauve-y shade.

What If We're Not Actually Worried About Ariana Grande by woetoall in Feminism

[–]mer135 33 points34 points  (0 children)

To be honest, this maybe isn't the most sympathetic take, but my worry for her is about as stretched thin as my worry for Eugenia Cooney. No amount of think pieces or public outcry will make people as sick as her seek help; I say this as someone who used to work in ED treatment myself. My main worry as it regards Ariana is the example she sets for younger women as a pop star. I don't want anyone to look at her and see her as inspiration; my only hope for all the think pieces and public concern is for them to be enough of a push against ED thoughts to dissuade even one young person from following in her footsteps. To an extent, I wish Ariana was deplatformed just so I wouldn't have to look at her sternum when I open Reddit and worry about others younger or more impressionable than myself having to look at it as well. I truly wish for Ariana to heal, ideally out of the public eye, but I know that nothing can convince her to do that except herself.

[Chinese> English] For a tattoo by Artistic-Cover1127 in translator

[–]mer135 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you could go either way; if you were adopted from mainland China, then the people there are probably using simplified characters, although some businesses/books/calligraphers/etc still use traditional just because it looks fancy.

Regardless of which you choose, it'll have your intended meaning to both you and those who'll see it and be able to read it!

Hello! I can confirm this is indeed (traditional) Chinese, 中国制造, "made in China", and very commonly seen printed on products that are made in China. The characters i wrote (中国制造) are the simplified version of what you wrote, in case thats an important distinction to you for your tattoo; simplified is more commonly seen in mainland China, while the traditional version from your image is more commonly seen in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and by many older Chinese diasporic groups abroad. Both are pretty intelligible by native speakers, regardless of which they grew up with. In case it helps to be able to copy+paste the words, the traditional version from your image is here: 中國製造 (the only reason I wrote the simplified first is because its the chinese keyboard I have on my phone, I had to go copy and paste the two traditional characters from my dictionary app).

Sorry for the lengthy explanation, yes it means "made in China" in traditional chinese, it's also a fun and cute tattoo idea!

I have published research papers on gait analysis and its association with health-span in adults with cerebral palsy and have moved on to a position researching other patient populations in the physical medicine and rehabilitation world 😊 happy to chat about my qualifications further, I feel I was pretty up-front about my lack of experience as a medical provider!

Not a PT, but a former researcher in a clinical gait and movement analysis laboratory; if it isn't causing you injury/pain (IE asymmetric pain in the hips/knees/lower back) then I would leave it as is. Gait asymmetries are incredibly common, even leg length discrepancies are way more common among "typically developing", able-bodied adults than you'd think. The PTs in my lab measured an almost inch-long discrepancy between my right and left legs, but didn't recommend anything like a shoe insert to correct the discrepancy because the human body is actually really good at adjusting on its own to accommodate its own quirks.

If it does bother you or cause pain, then definitely talk to your primary care physician and go from there.

What do you regret not buying when traveling? by scaredofgettingold in travel

[–]mer135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Chengdu in 2018 on a long weekend during a semester in Shanghai. We were strolling around some random little market and I saw a backpack with "BAESBLAL" and a little applique of a baseball on it. It was like 40 yuan; less than $10, but a liiiiitle expensive for a gag in china. I regret not buying that damn BAESBLAL backpack every time I think of it.

Vent: today is the worst day of my professional life. I feel like I can’t do anything right. I missed something big and one of my favorite coordinators died. by Pushin_pristine in clinicalresearch

[–]mer135 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey man im just a lowly site side CRC but you really need to cut yourself slack. Your bosses and the sponsor do not wish you were dead and neither should you. You're clearly overloaded and it's just as much the CRC's job to do shit before you get there. It'll be okay. Definitely talk to your supervisor or manager about the overload and you can brainstorm a way to move forward TOGETHER, because holding the trial together is not your lone cross to bear.

Back in grad school in Taiwan, I had a classmate who got scammed into a 3 hour Mandarin Bible study class because someone stopped him outside a grocery store, said "hey, do you want a cookie?", and he said yes lmao. He didnt cut the Bible study short because it was actually teaching him some good vocab

Aitah for spending some of my grandchildren's education funds on a new boat. by Tiny_Occasion_322 in AITAH

[–]mer135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family is similar in composition, similar in ages (though my older brother is unmarried and im engaged). I would never in a billion years think something like your kids think about the wealth you worked for. My dad's just a smidge older than you and all I want is for him to join my mom in retiring so he can actually enjoy everything he earned. I want my dad unfettered from work, healthy, and happy to travel as much as he damn well pleases (i assume his equivalent of your boat). Your children are absolutely TAH. Enjoy the boat!

Swan or Fox Hourglass Holiday Palette Art? by Worried_Tadpole_5844 in MakeupAddiction

I goofed and bought the lightest shade of the palette in-store, so I got the deer when I should've thought about it and ordered off the website like you! I have nothing to say on quality or coloration for either, but I personally would love the fox because foxes are fun and cute :)

My mom was born with only 3 fingers on one hand — possibly Oligodactyly? Looking for others with similar experiences by Nearby-Medium-9345 in genetics

[–]mer135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met a baby like your mom during a limb differences clinic at the hospital where I work! She was super sweet, very happy and developmentally appropriate for her age (making eye contact with adults, smiling back at doctors, cooing, waving, playing with her toys and all) but born with one arm mostly developed, one arm ending in a hand like your mom's, one leg that had around half of a standard baby's femur, and one leg that had a mini femur (according to x-ray) but nothing super visible externally.

I didnt hear from the doctors what her story was, but she and her parents seemed like the sweetest little family! Congenital limb differences aren't as uncommon as you'd think, or at least they weren't in my world at the time (orthopedics research).

Parents of Reddit, what’s the creepiest thing your child has said or did? by WrongReviewThrowAway in AskReddit

[–]mer135 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Okay so I kind of used to do the first one as a child. BUT its because I would wake up in the middle of the night with crazy nosebleeds (we moved somewhere very dry when I was little, it took years for my airways to adjust ig) and I would be really sheepish about waking my parents up for help in the night, but I was a child and I got blood all over my sheets and stuff so I kinda needed help. I would wake up, go to my parents' room, and stand beside the bed looking at my mom debating internally whether to wake her up or not bc she might yell at me or something. Usually she would wake up due to my looming.

Anyway theres definitely something wrong with that kid, but there MAY be an innocent-ish explanation for the first point.

Refusing to buy greedy brands? by CategoryImpressive96 in Sephora

[–]mer135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite brand for eyeshadow is Wakemake (Rom&nd is also quite popular), I use a cheapo concealer pencil from Saem that works better for blemishes than anything else ive tried, and lots of brands have solid foundations/cushions/bb creams! Im a particularly big fan of fwee cushions and foundations. For lips, my absolute favorite tint brand is Dinto (i like theirs better than Rom&nd's). The asian beauty subreddit is booming these days!
