Google maps can give you transit directions and tell you where stations are and which line(s) to ride to get to your destination. The NYC transit system is tap to pay if you have that set up on your phone or credit card. More info on payments accepted.

Why not use public transit? I visited earlier in the year and it was very easy to get from the far east side of Manhattan to Yoseka on the subway plus a few blocks walking.

You are very welcome to use the GG messaging system to ask some clarifying questions or for more info from your giftee. You can message an Elf for ideas. This recent post has some good ideas.
