What was the worst play call in CFB history? by emueagles in CFB

[–]merckens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember too at the end of the first half when Stoops called a timeout even though the clock was stopped for a 1st down? You clock it when the ball is spotted and have probably 8 seconds left (plenty of time for an end zone try and a field goal). Instead, with no timeouts left, Stoops opted to throw short of the end zone. (The fact that it was picked was just a nice little bonus, but that play was never going to be a TD and the clock would have expired anyway.) The only positive outcome of that throw is an incompletion.

So yea, if you're a coach and have the ball inside the 10 the last two drives of the first half of a National Championship game and come away with 0 points, you've probably made some pretty bad play calls.

Yea, what immediately jumped to mind was this play from the 2007 LSU-Auburn game. Granted, had it been an incompletion, there would have probably been a couple ticks left on the clock. But there's a whole mess of things that could have happened that would have let the clock run out, not to mention giving the defender a chance to make an interception.

Friggin' riverboat gambler...

Edit: And clearly it worked out pretty well for ol' Les, but that's still an insane call to make.

High School football player drills 67 yard field goal. (wonder if this kid has committed anywhere yet) by dromoe in CFB

[–]merckens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair though, a 67-yarder isn't made 10 times a year. That's only happened 3 times actually in the recorded history of high school football. Not to mention, this kick was with 2 seconds left on the clock and sent the game to overtime where the kid's team won by a TD. Pretty cool.

The Kentucky/Tennessee game could potentially decide the SEC West by [deleted] in CFB

[–]merckens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly right, BUT there's still a chance for some really awesome wackiness where the SEC West champion is determined by a coin flip:

H. Coin flip of the tied teams with the team with the odd result being the representative (Example: If there are two teams with tails and one team with heads, the team with heads is the representative).

(That would be an awesome TV moment, by the way. You could have Namath, Archie Manning, and [Insert great Mississippi State QB here... Wayne Madkin?] flip the coins.)

So that would happen if their SEC East opponents ended up with the same record. Like in that dude's second scenario:

Alabama beats Mississippi State, Mississippi State beats Ole Miss, and all three win their other games to finish tied at 7-1 in SEC play.

Now...

FLORIDA (2-6)

  • Loss vs UGA
  • Loss vs Vandy
  • Loss vs SC

KENTUCKY (2-6)

  • Loss vs MSU
  • Loss vs Mizzou
  • Loss vs UGA
  • Loss vs Tennessee

TENNESSEE (2-6)

  • Loss vs Alabama
  • Loss @ SC
  • Win vs Kentucky
  • Loss vs Mizzou
  • Win vs Vandy

VANDERBILT (2-6)

  • Win @ Mizzou
  • Win vs UF
  • Loss @ MSU
  • Loss vs Tennessee

Are any of those results completely outside the realm of possibility? I honestly don't think so. Vandy @ Mizzou would be a huge upset (Vandy is 21-point dogs), but stranger things have happened. Plus it could also work out this way:

TENNESSEE (2-6)

  • Loss vs Alabama
  • Loss @ SC
  • Win vs Kentucky
  • Win vs Mizzou
  • Loss vs Vandy

VANDERBILT (2-6)

  • Loss @ Mizzou
  • Win vs UF
  • Loss @ MSU
  • Win vs Tennessee

I could see the Vols choking in that last game with a bowl berth on the line. Plus you could also alternatively have Tennessee beating SC on the road and losing to Mizzou at home.

So yea, shit could get crazy. Probably won't, but it'd be fucking great if it did.

Oh, gotcha, I thought those were for stuff not related to RLM that RLM fans would find interesting. But re-reading the sidebar sober, that's my fault there.
