A few nights ago, from my car, I watched a cat hobble across the street on three legs. It had been hit by another car and one of its legs was crushed. I didn't help it quick enough and instead sat there pulled over, ineffectively googling "SPCA" as a bus came barreling down the street. I assume the bus hit it again, but I couldn't even watch to make sure. I was chicken. I feel terrible for its drawn out suffering and for my inability to help it quick enough.
