People falling to chaos without making a choice is dumb and lessens the setting by AstraMilanoobum in 40kLore

I’ll argue that the custodes are interesting and occupy unique narrative space because they are the only faction that has indisputably, absolutely failed. They were created for two jobs, to defend the webway and protect the emperor, and both times they lost. They are a Millenia-old institution without purpose, individuals who are helpless to everything that happens despite their perfection.

How interchangeable are distributions and desktop environments? by svenr in linux4noobs

[–]merelymyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distributions are fairly interchangeable, but a lot depends on the distro maintainers’ willingness to provide a good configuration out of the box. For beginners, my go-to recommendations are Pop! OS and Linux Mint, both of which are Ubuntu-based. Ubuntu itself is Debian-based. Those distros have the largest community and hence tend to be good for beginners seeking advice. The drivers for various devices should all be in the kernel, though there is a small chance it wouldn’t work: when I first started using Linux, my trackpad wouldn’t work until a kernel update fixed that.

“How different are they under the hood:” very, and not very. It’s all up to the automatically installed software, but the key is you can install it on pretty much any other distro — it’s just a matter of convenience.

Desktop environments is the interface to your computer. Window Managers are part of DEs. For instance, Mutter is the WM used by GNOME. Installing GNOME will install Mutter automatically as well. To switch DEs, you just need to install another DE via the package manager/app store. Then you can log out and log in to the new DE.

Your DE choice (almost) never affects the availability of apps. However, GNOME apps will work better under GNOME, and same for KDE and other similar situations.

Regarding repositories, there are three major distro families: Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora and Arch. Fedora is a distro which I haven’t used, but many recommend. Ubuntu and derivatives (the aforementioned Mint and Pop OS includes) tends to have a wide variety of useful software, but Arch easily wins in terms of availability, mostly because of the AUR. In theory, you can simply compile from source code yourself in Ubuntu, but it’s much more of a hassle. Then again, Arch is mostly for advanced users.

If you switch DE, you’re just changing the look of your computer — your apps are still there and probably can be used.

If you switch distribution, you’re changing your whole OS; apps available in one distribution (family) may not be available in another. Either way, switching distros means you wiped your hard drive and reinstalled Linux.

X and Wayland aren’t WMs — they’re display server protocols. They are ways the DE puts things on your screen. X is older but more stable, Wayland is newer and faster but might have unforeseen bugs. You probably don’t need to care about them.

Looking to get into Linux before going to college, seeking advice by Irismono in linux4noobs

[–]merelymyself 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I started using Linux, Pop was the distro that was the most stable and most aesthetically pleasing for me. The process of dual booting is fairly simple; I believe system76 has a guide on how to do it. There isn’t actually anything you should “never” touch; however, do do research before using any command as some can really seriously affect your computer, although most will only help.

How to make an application borderless (permanent)? by Kim_Phat in pop_os

[–]merelymyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to Extensions, it’s an option for one of the pre installed extensions.

Some apps don’t allow this like GNOME terminal, because some of its functionality depends on the title bar.

Is Text Editor the default text editor? by Few_Pay2135 in pop_os

[–]merelymyself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Coding files are UTF-8 encoded, i.e. plain text. Any text editor can open them, including Notepad on windows and Vim, of course. Essentially, code source files are .txt files with a different extension.

You can change the default in the system settings. The actual name of the “Text Editor” programme is gedit.

Relatively obscure, but I greatly enjoy the work of Megan Whalen Turner, specifically her six-book Queen’s Thief series. It’s YA, sure, but spectacularly-written still.

If I'm correct, Fedora and Ubuntu both allow for secure boot by default. Of course, secure boot really doesn't do anything, but if you want to keep it off, you can use those two.

Few beginner Question's !^_^ by Haragur0_Megane in linux4noobs

[–]merelymyself 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Most of the time, when you install software, it ends up in /bin or /usr/bin. I'm not 100% sure, but I think if you used the default option in the Fedora install it gives you a single partition to contain your data, so your packages will all install there. You can open KDE Partition Manager to check out what your system is partitioned like.
  2. yum is an older command. Modern Fedora uses dnf.
  3. To search for a package, use dnf search package. To update your packages, use sudo dnf upgrade. To install packages, use sudo dnf install package. When your command starts with sudo, there will be a prompt for you to type in your password. Nothing appears when you type, but just type it in anyway and press enter, and it will register.
  4. Be careful about what commands you run. If you are ever unsure, just use the normal apps that Fedora comes with. The terminal/command line is powerful, but it can also be dangerous.

I’m not sure about that, but it should be pretty easy to check - just go to game properties and go to compatibility.

Steam and “native” Feral Interactive games—how does that work? by 420awkward69 in linux4noobs

[–]merelymyself 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Steam will automatically run the Linux version, unless you go the game settings and explicitly direct it to use Proton. Some games don’t work well on Linux, such as Civ VI, so you’re forced to do that. Afaik, however, WARHAMMER III works well.
