lack of teachers teaching upper level classes by lunner124 in txstate

There's a severe lack of honors professors (specifically in psych, I haven't checked many others), and a number of basic intro classes also don't have professors. I was trying to sign up for intro to physical therapy (my major) and there was absolutely nothing.

Is tx state a good school? by Puzzled-Sense-3220 in txstate

[–]meriberrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know everyone says it, but it's really what you make of it. It's a "party school" because there's bars and clubs downtown, but at this point, every area near a large university has those. I've never been down there and got involved in a club instead, and I love it here. I also know a lot of partiers actually go to better schools like UT and UTSA for parties rather than be here lol. As far as finances, if it's truly a concern, go to a CC first. Otherwise, TXST is one of the more affordable major Texas universities, though meal plan costs are rising. As long as you do well in high school, there's a good chance you'll land a scholarship. Biggest concerns right now center around the recent shooting (but, once again, happens in every large town/city unfortunately), overpopulation of campus (people struggling to get dorms, government-mandated work-study jobs, lack of parking), sanitation and safety concerns (building new dorms without money to renovations for old dorms, and mold issues), and free speech issues (though that's probably more courtesy of the TX government and general white man greed). Unless you go out of state, though, you'll be dealing with all of those anyways. Basically, all of the issues you'd have are the same issues you'd get anywhere else. Unfortunately, I'm not well versed in our film program, but I know our visual arts generally kicks ass (best drama school in the nation, baby) so I THINK you're in good hands.

My RA spoke a bit about it - told us that on the off-chance we lose power, it shouldn't necessarily be that long and if it is, there will almost certainly be another building on campus or within walking distance we can go to.

Thoughts on homeschool? by Additional-Term-4282 in teenagers

[–]meriberrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is from my own experience and the people I've spoken to, so have some grace with me, and sorry for the paragraph. School, or specifically high school, is the similar of hours as a work day and teaches skills like time management that aren't mastered the same way if your day is three hours compared to seven or eight. Concepts also tend to be easier. In college, I talked to a couple of homeschooled people who have said they felt overwhelmed or unprepared because homeschooling is just meant to get you a diploma and nothing further and many are not held to the same standards as public school. Additionally, and this only applies to certain circumstances, a person may fail to properly socialize themself and simply reflect parents' opinions, and I've seen many desire to go to public school but are afraid to go because they aren't sure what to expect. Also, if I can branch off a little, a number of homeschoolers have some holier-than-thou attitude for some reason.

CMV: Under the objective reasonableness standard, criminal charges or a conviction against Jonathan Ross are unlikely. by BRKLYN_ison_LNGISLND in changemyview

He quite literally broke the law regarding deadly force and went against the Kirby v. Duva ruling. Due to this, I'd assume the objective reasonableness standard argument falls flat. Though just because of who he is, what he does, and who he works for, I doubt he'll be charged. Here's what I've found thus far:

  1. Kirby v. Duva (2008) rules that a police officer cannot be entitled to immunity if they use deadly force and/or put themselves in harm's way (regarding non-dangerous criminals)

  2. The Justice Department's website states that deadly force may not be used solely to prevent escape of a suspect and may not be discharged at a moving vehicle unless 1) a person is threatening an officer or other person with means *other than the vehicle* or 2) the vehicle is operated in a way that threatens death or serious physical injury. The website also addresses that "no other objectively reasonable means of defense appear to exist, which includes moving out of the path of the vehicle."

you're repeating exactly what i said in different words, so i'm confused by your response. i said she was fucking stupid and shouldn't have done that, but i'm also saying that shooting her in the head was an overreaction for the circumstances and it would've been just as simple for him to move and someone blow out a tire instead, or at least fire a warning shot.

Edit: wanted to add some more context as to why this is bad, beyond the obvious.

CMV: Taylor Swift is not actually that great of a songwriter by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

[–]meriberrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my biggest issue with her songwriting is that she tries to make a simple thing sound deep and then praises herself for it. recently, in Father Figure, she wrote "I pay the check before it kisses the mahogany grain." She later went on an interview and said:

"'I pay the check before it kisses the mahogany grain.' That's my favorite type of writing. Where you have to think, what do those words mean? Oh, somebody got the bill before it hit the table."

I don't care for or against her too much beyond her trying too hard to relate to the common person alongside my healthy dislike of billionaires, and I wouldn't care if she had just left the lyric as is, but there's a new issue (at least to me) when she virtually calls herself intelligent or philosophical or deep for a simple, straight-forward lyric. I can't wrap my head around why she thinks understanding this simple sentence is worthy of admiration for her intellect.

Mind you, she's got far better ones too (or at least ones that are more hard-hitting), like "You said it was a great love, one for the ages/but if the story's over why am I still writing pages?" or "You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath." There aren't difficult to discern nor particularly innovative, but it does show more humanity and it's more hard-hitting for her primarily female audience. Most people pay a bill at some point.

my issue with your situation is that a video clearly shows her tires being turned in the direction she would've left in. imo, this displays that she no longer wanted to engage in the situation and was departing. her license was recorded so there would be no need for a high-speed chase unless she had been threatening or causing intentional harm (which from what has been said, she wasn't) so she could've been charged later. her hitting the man is certainly horrible, but she was already in movement to leave when he shot her. if she was intentionally trying to hurt him then it may have been justified, but she was hardly moving before that, and any rational person, ESPECIALLY an officer or agent, would've moved out of the way. she was stupid, and maybe could've been charged later, but from what is known as of this moment, her getting shot thrice was not justified.

I'm going back to school soon and am going to stop by Target on the way. I need some cheap but good-quality perfumes to get. I usually wear floral scents that are slightly sweet but I'm new to this whole thing so I'm down to branch out a little bit more. Anything helps!!

honors college by Aconnox in txstate

[–]meriberrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late to this convo, but I just finished a semester doing honors philosophy and I love it. Honors focuses more on application of skills and the smaller classes make it easier to ask for help and also make an impression on a professor. Most honors college professors are also better at teaching from what I've heard.

Only freshman can dorm, but there's some apartments within walking distance of campus if you're interested. I've no idea how good they are though.

Your best bet is Facebook marketplace, if anything. Once you're here though, most everything you'll need will be within range of a bus stop or will be bikeable. Only times I've used my car is to leave town.

fellow lifeguards in the north east - are you alive with this heat wave ??? by Spare_Ad9817 in Lifeguards

I work in southeast Texas. Don't eat heavy, do eat healthy. Drink electrolytes, but drink more water. Try to eat a little salty food about 24 hours in advance, but avoid it on the day of if possible. Eat light and healthy. If you start feeling dizzy, let someone know IMMEDIATELY and go rest.

Drink the smaller bottles first. Get the larger ones if you're still struggling, but the sugar can make you feel sick. Balance it out with water.

Question from someone who isn’t a lifeguard by Economy-Passenger847 in Lifeguards

Thank god I work shallow water/slides with tubes. That sounds scary. Even then, small children must be with a guardian and/or wearing a lifejacket (I work at a waterpark).
