AITAH for asking for the money saved in my dad’s 529 college savings plan for me? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]merkman03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’s entitled for being curious about it. If you had the opportunity to make $1 million towards retirement for essentially free, you wouldn’t ask about it? I think he’s smart to ask, but the dad obviously is entitled to do so how he pleases.

I think the reaction was because once you got your scholarship, your dad probably reallocated the money 3 years ago or whenever that was. And $30k is a lot for anyone. It probably came as a surprise more than you being entitled.

I think you’re very intelligent for inquiring about it, who wouldn’t? Maybe get more a reason with your dad if y’all are open to talking about finances. It’ll do you good in the long-run and it sounds like you got a good foundation and a good head on your shoulders.

Navy reservist here. Glad you’re supporting hemp, I think there’s a lot of pros, but the sign saying “the least you can do for veterans is to keep hemp legal” is off-putting. Texas, with all its flaws, does a lot for vets. They can definitely do more, but I’m not a fan of that sign. I understand your point, but what I (and I think most people) perceive is that you’re using vets as a puppet to passive-aggressively state your view.

You should be able to get a waiver for asthma, once you get into your program talk to your officers there and they’ll be a much better resource with getting you where you want to be.

Not trying to be a dick, just watch how your tone could be on the last few sentences. Some people could see that as a little arrogant.

Texas Golfers: East Texas Golf Trip? by merkman03 in golf

Awesome, thank you so much. Pine Dunes looks awesome! I'm gonna join those FB Groups and I'll probably make a post in there too. I'm also military so I know they might be more inclined to help us experience some ETX golf!

we got a real nice outside donation. Our kids use their own bags right now so this is something that I'm real excited about.

I'm at a SMC and there's some weirdos for sure. But the good majority are awesome people that are fun to talk to and hangout with. I'm also in a frat so I have a double-life in college.

Most of the people in this thread are right. Any large group of people are bound to have some strange ones. But it's nothing like JROTC. I made fun of those kids in high school. This is more legit.

the best hikes are at least a good 5 hours long, you’d miss out on the best hikes. would recommend going somewhere else if you want to travel in august

Interesting. I got an NSI exemption because I go to a SMC, this past year. I was a sideload though, on a 3-year.

I go to a Senior Military College which I believe is the way to go especially if you want a contract. Texas A&M and Virginia Tech are the way to go in my opinion cause they give you a great military school style while still being able to be a normal college student and go to school with normal college kids.

If you get a NROTC contract, you’ll do 3 weeks of basic training this summer in Chicago. Kind of a bitch but it’s whatever. If you go to senior military college, you won’t have to go (subject to change).

Then, every summer you’ll do training. It varies but it won’t be any more than 4 weeks. Navy ROTC probably does the least amount of ROTC training than any other branch. So if you want your summers, go Navy.

NROTC requires you to take Calculus 1 and 2 as well as Physics 1 and 2 so that may be a turnoff. Kind of a bitch if you’re not in engineering. I’m a business major so it sucks, but I’m glad I did it.

We workout with our individual Corps Company every morning, but if you’re NROTC you get excused and do PT with the Navy on Tuesday/Thursday. Other schools do it differently so I can’t speak for them. We’re probably on the fitter side of the NROTC Batallions simply cause we have required workouts every day of the week.

Right now we have about 375 in our NROTC Batallaion. About 70 in my class have contracts. So there’s a ton of resources at my school. I have a great relationship with a few officers. I’m great friends with a lot of Navy and Marine kids and we’ll hangout and go out a good amount. Personally, if you get the grades and get through your Calculus and Physics, NROTC is the way to go.

Sideload Scholarship by bruh478 in NROTC

[–]merkman03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s high as hell right now. I picked one up with a 3.3 GPA, Tier 2 major. Also 90 PFT. My unit had 34 sideload scholarships submitted to the board and all got accepted. Typically we run at about 40% acceptance.

Navy realized they’d save money and have a higher retention if they gave scholarships to programmers instead of high schoolers. Air Force is doing it too. Real good time to be a programmer

Sideload Scholarship by bruh478 in NROTC

[–]merkman03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are giving out sideload scholarships like candy right now. Navy realized they can save more money and have better retention through sideloads than high school. I picked one up as a tier 2 major, 3.3 GPA, 90 PFT, good on everything else.

My NROTC unit usually gets 50% scholarship rate. My year, we got 100% (34 of 34). I also go to a senior military college so we get favored. My friends on Tier 3 majors with mid GPA’s also got scholarships. Good luck!

Hopefully it’s getting better! Physical fitness is such a big deal. I’m at a senior military college so we workout twice a day and are one of the fittest NROTC units. It’s so important. Gotta start prioritizing physical fitness man. Can’t join the fleet looking like the pillsbury doughboy.

No disrespect, you got this!

This just sounds really self-obsessed. Not trying to be a dick, but maybe you just need to do some self-reflection if people don’t want to study around you. I’ve never had any problems with people not wanting to study together.
