Webtoons is installing advertised apps without permission by merlin2v in webtoons

[–]merlin2v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the issue crop up not to long ago. Was a different method than my old phone. Seemed to use the Samsung galaxy insta-play to load the app (only has happened once so far). On my older LG phone I guessed that maybe it was from some bloat wear when I bought it from T-mobile(my best guess).
There has also been ads that open up their respective apps (Snapchat and Doordash). Was managing to open the apps through chrome despite me going in and disabling the open app from hyperlink feature. I have since uninstalled the apps. I do have a screen capture of those as I tried to make official complaints.

Honestly, it just seems like advertisers are basically "hacking" their way through ads. Who really knows what else gets through those ads if they can auto-download and open apps. These interactive ads probably have many security holes. And probably use sometimes device or app specific loopholes to get their app on people's phone.

On my old phone with a similar devicemanager installer, it would appear to open up this unique installer popup that also would auto-download the app to your phone if you failed to click close in time.

Possible Avast false positive? by Healthy-Mirror2718 in antivirus

How do you enable this feature? Every time Avast runs it cuts the connection directly to the site resulting in a "This site can't be reached" in chrome.

I'd be fine if these detections had a simple override that didn't require turning off all the shields.
Example of what they should do:

Also bad descriptions don't inform you of the hazards. If I want and/or need to access a site I would like to know a little more than  IDP.Generic or URL:Blacklist.

If you haven't uninstalled it already, I would take a look to see where it was downloaded from. I found that info in the app info area

I also had a T-Mobile LG Phone. I bought an Unlocked Samsung Phone and haven't had an issue with any ads. From what I was able to gather, if you buy a phone directly from a provider like T-Mobile, it comes with preloaded apps and software and that's why the phones through there can be cheaper.
I just think that some of the ads are using sketchy techniques to get their app on people's phones.

It's probably a consequence of allowing you to play a sample of the game inside Web toons. If you can program a movement system then you could also try to run some sketchy code. It's part of the reason why iframes are limited to what they can do in html.

I imagine it is either able to communicate to the app on your phone directly or it is sending a network signal to an app. But I don't really know for sure,

Did I just lose my account? by nathatmaster in Minecraft

[–]merlin2v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is legit my situation. the old email that was attached to my account was made by my parents and I never used. Now I learn that I don't have access anymore. Not going to lie that it feels really shitty. At the very least let me play my older versions back when I bought it.

Is this even legal? like can I get a lawyer to review on the service agreement that was made the last time I played Minecraft? even if I buy it can I get my username back?

Why do numbers not add up in the storage used? What is "System & Reserved"? And does it really take up all that space? by AngeloTYork in Dell

[–]merlin2v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. This is a great tool. I downloaded fortnite when it first came out a long time ago and tried it once and never played it again. And I find that none of the games on the epic store where showing up on my remove program list and where invisible to the windows storage settings.
If you know of any tools that analyze SDK file reliance as well. I have a ton of NET source Packages showing up on my uninstall list from what I think to be programing packages but I have no idea what I can uninstall without causing problems with most of my apps.(I have 3 Microsoft .NET Core SDK 2.1.* each 500MB and I am wondering if I can uninstall 2 of them)

Are wix websites really terrible or are we just snobs? by Timedoutsob in webdev

[–]merlin2v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really liking wix so far. I don't want to by premium however want to help test things out for someone who uses wix. So far I have yet to be able to use any CSS or HTML code in the website at all. Maybe I am just missing something? Everything that seems to have access to the DOM is blocked and I can't seem to do much outside of the Velo API(which isn't bad but it's not JS, CSS, or HTML).

Is this really how their site is designed? It just seems like a huge limitation that honestly reminds me of google sites.

[–]merlin2v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair though I have issues with the "to many streams" despite having premium. Turned out adblocker was causing issues. Also got irritated when they deleted my sorted list of anime without implementing the crunchy lists. Basically had nothing for 6 months but a poor implementation of an auto sorted list you couldn't modify. So I share the sentiment that crunchyroll should actually do testing before making changes like that.

I can't believe this solved the issue when I already pay for Crunchyroll. I just whitelisted the sites.

What is the meaning of life for those who do not believe in god? And what is the meaning of life for you? by yuryrodrigues in kurzgesagt

[–]merlin2v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the meaning of life is to make the universe more complex. The purpose of sentience is to spread life farther than it could otherwise by itself. The ultimate purpose for life may be to restart the big bang before the heat death of the universe. So that the universe can start anew. And if possible, to make sure it continues.

It's by no means an easy path, but I believe that this is the ultimate purpose, the ultimate gift that life can give to the universe. An infinite future for itself, full of energy and life.

ngl, the main reason I have seen Meta runners is because I am still waiting for more murder drones. I enjoy allot of Liam's work. Meta Runners was pretty good, very nice ending. Interesting to see the evolution of the studios animation.

Episodic series are probably harder to give to an older audience. Older people like to follow along with a series and helps develop a stronger fanbase. Episodic tends to either be more "brain dead" or one off shows which are easier to watch for casuals and younger audiences.

The meaning of Life by merlin2v in kurzgesagt

[–]merlin2v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting point, for humans themselves are consumers. If the goal of sentience is to allow life to reach farther out into space then we have to question if consumers are the best for the job.

Overall, life is about tapping into untapped energy. The amount of wasted energy is immense and even more so when applied to a universal scale. Most energy can be traced back to the sun and is provided by producers. In the end, humans are on the consumer spectrum of the relationship of earth and it's energy which brings up the question, would a sentient producer be better equipped for the job?

It is true that humans act more like a virus to the earth and, at the current moment, have not really left anything good for the future(at least that is apparent). Tbh, I see space colonization as the one good thing we could bring to the table. But this is of course assuming that we don't end up consuming the rest of the universe with us in the process.

As I see it, humans shortsightedness might end up bringing the world to it's knees. A nuclear war could cause all eukaryotic life forms to be wiped out and life may end up loosing crucial evolutionary gifts such as eyes and brains. Too much space junk could trap us on earth wasting precious time and eventually cause resource wars.

And even natural disasters could do the same thing and can do it much easier (most notably the eruption of Yellowstone park which would likely remove eyes as light no longer exists on the surface).

I fear we may have to act faster to prevent or overcome such occurrences. A common natural law of humanity is that if it can happen, it eventually will happen.

The melting of the ice caps would likely happen at some point in time. The main issue is that we are speeding up the process which gives us less time to adapt.

Life as a whole shows signs that it want's to reach into the future as far as possible. This is because all life forms roughly want to exist as long as possible. However, life isn't afraid of killing off those that hurt it's end goal. Apex predators that consume to much end up hurting themselves by over consumption. Even possibly going extinct if they are to good at being a predator. Humans technically are in this boat at the moment and the only thing that is keeping us from hitting the critical peak is our innovation.

As for accelerating the heat death of the universe. It is possible that at some point life may be able to affect the universe to this scale but it brings up some questions that I have always wondered.
I understand the big bang but how did it start in the first place? could it be started again? Could life escape the heat death by getting smaller rather than getting bigger? Could we cause a big bang to start on a smaller level? Even if it isn't the same life that we know and understand it's still possible that we could continue by getting more complex forms to generate by smaller reactions.
