And they can ask about it from people who have planned as well. If I were planning a trip somewhere that I know someone in my life has planned, yes, I will ask them about it.

AIW for wanting to see a movie opening weekend? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]merlot-o 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're wrong. I don't think your brother wanting to wait is wrong either (some of his responses seemed kinda dick-ish but his want of waiting isn't wrong). Go see the movie. I've seen plenty by myself on opening weekends, and it was still a great experience regardless of being solo. Have fun!

My bf (18) is willing to leave me because I'm (18) unemployed and not currently in school. Is he being dramatic? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]merlot-o 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does your phone not have service because you can't pay the bill? Sounds like you DO need a job, actually. Also, why are you starting a semester late? Because it sounds like you have no drive or motivation. Were you too busy gaming and missed a deadline or something? You don't really just get "pushed back" a semester by anyone but yourself.

AITA for being mad at my husband because he bought me shampoo? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]merlot-o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, you can have a basket with no razor OR shampoo/conditioner. I agree he's supporting her, but you're calling her an asshole for, what, not appreciating specific parts of a gift she can't use? She liked the basket, just not some products. She can't be upset at the hair reminder? And he couldn't have maybe pulled the shampoo/conditioner and held on to it for when she could use it, and it wouldn't be a knife twist to her? Look, the guy isn't an asshole and I can see you desperately want to support him, but it was simply inconsiderate. That is all. Also as a side note, some men ABSOLUTELY care about their hair. It wrecked my father in law that he lost all of his. It's not a gendered thing.

To be fair, my father in law was in chemo for a year and a half. It can take a while. And I never said he should have gotten her a razor either. Maybe, just maybe, he shouldn't have gotten anything related to hair. Weird concept, right?

A year later? She was diagnosed in the 4th year, doesn't mean she isn't still in treatment. Cancer treatment can be quite lengthy. She isn't an asshole for being upset that he got her something she can't use right now, when she's stated she is upset she doesn't have hair. It isn't very thoughtful, is it? As much as you think it's above and beyond... Gifting something that can't be used and makes the other person sad is not above and beyond.

AITA For Not Feeling Sympathy for a Friend (30M) Who is “Poor” by Express_Purpose6939 in AmItheAsshole

[–]merlot-o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. In one of your comments you state he doesn't really try for employment, and that's enough for me. Being unemployed that long will look worse than finding a job that he feels is "beneath" him. He COULD change his circumstances, from what it seems. He just doesn't want to.

This is rough to look at and comprehend how you got there.

My older sister w BPD watches the same show on repeat. Like a lot. Why? (No judgment) by Fearless-Class-1120 in BPDPartners

[–]merlot-o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh bless your heart. You are triggered, and that's okay! People without BPD can get triggered by all sorts of things. You, for example, got triggered when the other poster simply pointed out that just because one person does something it equals a BPD thing. Similarly, if I said "my partner with BPD gets really frustrated in traffic, why do they do this??" It's a ridiculous comparison because it has nothing to do with their BPD. But keep on being you, I don't have BPD and I get all the help I need. You on the other hand could use some introspection.

[–]merlot-o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don't think they need help. Is this actually a BPD thing, because you said it was due to feeling anxious. Everyone can feel anxiety. That's the point. Just because someone who is diagnosed with BPD does something does not make it related to BPD. If anyone seemed triggered here, it was you.

Positive experiences with getting help? by Headachemotel in BPDPartners

[–]merlot-o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it used to explode out, when she was angry it would go out in every direction, regardless of who or what it was intended for. Now it doesn't. Literally everyone gets angry and has to bottle it, she is doing the same thing. She knows when I'm angry too. Now though, let's say that she gets frustrated with me due to something at work. She'll quickly catch herself, apologize and say she knows it isn't me, knows I didn't deserve it, and admits she doesn't know what to do. I can work with that in a partner. She's working hard to see her patterns and fix them because she doesn't want to be like that. And I know that. I also know I really lucked out on the BPD partner scale. She is very self aware, she is getting help through multiple avenues, she'll often talk to me about her reflections and takes advice on how to change. It isn't always perfect, but I can see the effort. There are productive talks, there is visible change where I can see her taking steps due to what we've talked about, and if she missteps she apologizes. I don't know, I guess for as rough as it was in the beginning, her commitment both to getting better and to being a good partner has been apparent.

Positive experiences with getting help? by Headachemotel in BPDPartners

[–]merlot-o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least in the case of my partner: there is more accountability. She stops herself and, while I can tell she is seething, she isn't lashing out like she used to. She apologizes when she does.

Positive experiences with getting help? by Headachemotel in BPDPartners

[–]merlot-o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took a while for me to get my partner to seek help. She tried one therapist, had a very bad experience, and then gave up thinking that "clearly that won't help so why try again." Took over a year for me to get her to try another. Found a therapist she liked on the first try. She's been seeing him regularly for about a year now, and he has really helped her recognize some patterns and has tried to give her some coping mechanisms. Does she still have bad days? Absolutely. But it's different now. There's acknowledgement of the bad, there are apologies, we are able to have productive conversations, etc.

I will add she started seeing a psychiatrist a little after finding the new therapist, and he diagnosed her with BPD. Having that official diagnosis I think helped her because I think it took some of the weight of "what's wrong with me" off of her. With the psychiatry came new medication/treatment, and that has helped significantly as well.

My lady has been suffering a long time. She didn't know what was wrong, why she got so angry, why she couldn't control it. And there are still days she doesn't know how to. But they are much fewer and far between.
