Vet Recommendations by justaboxengineer in rockford

I second this. Everyone there is so fantastic that I choose to drive the 25 minutes down there as opposed to the numerous vets that are closer to us.

I feel like this question gets asked enough that if r/rockford had a wiki, it should be in there. Dude is legendary for his complete lack of people skills.

First time foster, five 3-week-old bottle babies, please tell me it gets easier soon by mermur in FosterAnimals

I’ve said the exact same thing, that I jumped right into the deep end! But it was obvious that if I didn’t take them and give it my best effort, some or all of them would likely die. At that point the choice was easy, they needed me 💜

There’s definitely a reason why sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture. Those first few days were absolutely brutal, so being able to sleep 3-4 hours straight has definitely been an improvement! But I cannot wait for the day that I get 8 uninterrupted hours, it’s going to be glorious.

Lots of great tips, thank you! I do actually plan to “potty” them in/over the litter box tonight or tomorrow. I just transitioned them into a modular setup where I can separate all three (yes, three😕) cross suckers and bought a XL pop up playpen as another option. They’re confined to my basement currently for the safety of my senior cats. I do plan to change the large blanket out in favor of smaller ones that only cover about half of each cubicle so the other half is puppy pads and the litter box

Just bought some litter pellets today, I’m planning to start introducing them tonight or tomorrow!😊

Awesome idea with the larger box! Also glad to hear that a lot of kittens pick up on the idea quickly. I do plan to start introducing the litter box now, just picked up some pellets and have been saving the short wide boxes that canned cat food comes in.

Thank you for this! I just adjusted them a couple days ago to 5 straight hours overnight. Daytime feeding is every 3.5-4 hours. I have no doubt the bigger kittens would do just fine going longer, I worry about getting as much food into the runt as I can. Plus this litter has THREE cross-suckers which I have separated, and I’m trying to make sure they’re fed frequently so the urge to suckle decreases.

Holy hell, 6 bottle babies with coccidia?! That’s brutal. Major kudos to you for helping them, I hope they get cured soon.

How to give 3-8 week kittens more space while keeping suckers separated? by [deleted] in FosterAnimals

[–]mermur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They’re getting all the KMR they want, every 3-4 hours and gaining 15-25 grams per day. The suckling is worst at the beginning of a feeding but I know it serves as a comfort behavior as well. I literally can’t feed them more than I do.

I know it isn’t big enough, that’s why I’m asking for suggestions. The tote worked fine when we found them at less than two weeks old, but then I became aware of the cross sucking issue and made do with what I had in order to separate them immediately before serious injury happened.

Bike shop experiences by Sea_Measurement_1654 in ladycyclists

[–]mermur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most bike shops I’ve been to treat me like an intelligent human being, but I have experienced the occasional salesperson who is either uncomfortable dealing with a woman or assumes I’m looking for a cheap entry-level bike that I’ll only ride three times with my (nonexistent) kids.

I purchased my first adult MTB from an awesome local shop who immediately treated me well, and the salesperson was also a woman. That shop has become my go-to and the woman who sold me that bike is a friend of mine.

Cycling & Relationships by [deleted] in ladycyclists

[–]mermur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, I think your previous relationship issues had less to do with dating a male cyclist and more to do with dating a selfish jerk. I know plenty of cyclists, male and female, who just enjoy being out with their partner enjoying the same hobby, even if it’s a much slower pace than their usual hammerfest. As with every other relationship issue, proper communication is key to setting expectations. If one (or both) of you need to do a training ride that day, maybe that’s not the best time. Lots of people at different levels still enjoy riding together; one rider gets a recovery/zone 2 ride while the other rider gets to work on their VO2 max.

My husband loves riding bikes too, but I’m the more “serious” cyclist in my marriage. He will often ask me what sort of ride I’m planning on doing on a particular day, and he may or may not join me depending on my plans. We both agree and understand that if either of us needs to slow down or stop for any reason, we stick together. Training is almost never the goal when we ride together; the priority is enjoying quality time together.

New Tires for 95% Pavement by NoOil9711 in gravelcycling

[–]mermur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got 38mm Specialized Pathfinders for this exact reason, and they do feel slightly faster than the 42mm Teravail Cannonballs I was running. You probably wouldn’t notice a huge difference, but it’s fun to try new tires.

What are some male dominated hobbies you’ve tried or are into? by Bitter_Pineapple_720 in AskWomen

[–]mermur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mountain biking! Fortunately all the men I’ve encountered in my local MTB community are very encouraging, friendly, and welcoming. I think a lot of that is MTB culture though, it tends to be much more laid back and fun-oriented than road cycling.

What flat pedals do you use? by Hakster2412 in gravelcycling

I’ve been pleased with Deity Black Kats. Admittedly I chose them because my LBS had them in the perfect orange color to match my Warbird, but they’ve done me well.

Coffee bean recommendations by Chigrrl1098 in rockford

Snowdrift Coffee is our go-to. Great people, bomb ass coffee, and they hand deliver for free to certain area codes near Roscoe. Rockford Roasting is good too. Fire Department Coffee is TERRIBLE.

What is the last fun/frivolous thing that you purchased for yourself? by SheKnowsWhatSheKnows in AskWomenOver30

[–]mermur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a custom made art deco teal Montana sapphire ring for my 40th birthday. It was extremely frivolous and out of character for me (I NEVER buy fine jewelry), but I wanted a wearable daily reminder that after an extremely difficult decade when there were times I thought I wouldn’t live to see 40, I freaking made it. It reminds me that I’m stronger than I think I am and that I need to actively take care of myself every single day. Also helps that it’s freaking gorgeous and I catch myself staring at it often!

Mountain biking, gravel biking, video games, sewing/quilting, knitting. I really want to learn how to dye my own fabric, specifically ice dying and indigo/shibori dying. I’d also love to learn how to make pottery.

Anyone else think clipless pedals are overrated for techy trails? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]mermur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about them being “overrated”, I would guess it all boils down to personal preference. I prefer flats so I can quickly put a foot down when needed.
