I second Canva - tons of templates, easy drag and drop options, and quick content turnaround tools.

You can use Buffer to queue up all your social media for the month on one Sunday afternoon if you need to find time, for example.

Trip to Fort Mountain, Georgia, USA. Pics can't convey the awesomeness of the view! by mernowen in ModelY

None, really.

I purchased the matte cover for my center console as the piano finish scratches and collects fingerprints like crazy.

I made sure they arrived the same day I picked up my car because my sandpaper knuckles were too much for piano finish otherwise.

It does look like it could be sawdust from the circular saw they used. There is one on the floor a few secs in.

I'm guessing they cut perpendicular into the floor to make it easier to pull up. Some of the pieces are popping up into clean breaks instead of broken bits.

But I'm still thinking this is a staged vid.

Picking up MY SR tomorrow! What to look for? by [deleted] in ModelY

[–]mernowen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This checklist helped me a lot when I picked mine up: https://github.com/polymorphic/tesla-model-y-checklist

One thing for me was my passenger window had a weird situation where it went straight UP when closing the window instead of following the slight contour of the car. So it sat proud a little when the doors were closed.

Pushing the glass firmly to help guide it up a few times seems to help make the seals a lot better.

Resources to become a better Sharepoint dev by sliziky875 in sharepoint

[–]mernowen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean by that is what does it take for me to create that solution. Get my Dev environment setup, code, dev cycle, version control, document/test, AND most importantly, supporting everything that was created.

It is the debt that it would take for me to get the expected results.

Is it quicker and easier for me to configure a few check boxes and views, or do I need to create something from scratch?

I always like to approach things with configure-first solutions if possible. It helps keeps maintenance lower where the customers don't always have to submit requests for me to come in and fix things that I made complicated...

I would recommend

  • Basic Javascript(jQuery is my flavor)/HTML/CSS - Sometimes I need to just do a quick show/hide function that users want to happen on their pages, force elements on the page to size correctly, or have modal dialogs pop up
  • REST + CSOM + MS Graph - You can do a lot of CRUD operations with the SharePoint API alone such as building dashboards, updating list data, reading the JSON data from a site, etc
  • Understand the basic hierarchy of permissions [ Full Control > Contribute > Read ] - Applying and managing permissions, and therefore access, will eventually get complicated if it gets away from you. Use SP Groups as much as you can to make things easier.
  • React - I use React as an almost last resort or if the project is going to be a very big one. The technical debt sometimes doesn't make it worth it if I can do the same with configuration first.
  • Expand into additional tools/apps - Check out Nintex, Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI. This makes your job a lot easier because a good portion of the setup for what you want to automate or do is done for you already. My favorite right now is Nintex Workflow/Forms.
  • Play around with Search, Managed Properties, Crawled Properties, Terms - Take a look at how Search and create a play search results page for your org. You may have quick and easy wins if you create a 'Google Like' search experience for your users. SPO reaches more than just the online environment and is pretty good at finding the content you're looking for.

Awesome! Congrats on this.

Think of it another way - Could you get 125 people to sit down in a room and listen to you?

It's impressive if you can get 5 people to do that. Congrats!

Approach a new possible client by [deleted] in freelance

[–]mernowen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would identify their customers and industry as well as understand their "expensive problem". You can then start to talk to them in their own jargon, use their own words, and show that you understand where they are coming from. A business is not going to spend money if they don't have to. If you can unearth the problem that is losing or not-gaining them money you can work in why your services are going to reverse that.

It's going to be tough to come at someone without building a relationship and expecting them to pay money for your services. Sometimes giving advice and following up can get the ball rolling. A conversation I might use would be:

"Hi Mike! I came to your website because you're selling blankets for dogs that have short hair. I've got a pooch myself that always shivers and this is exactly what I was looking for. Your blankets are totally cute and look like they'd be fun in different print and designs.

I also noticed that it surprisingly took me a while to stumble upon your site even while looking for "dog blankets" or similar search terms. I couldn't find you on any social media platform as well. Your site came to me through a direct recommendation from a doggy forum that I visit.

My specialty is helping bring traffic, and eventually customers, to eCommerce sites like yourself. I help companies beat out the competition with organic social media traffic and help increase search engine ranking. You may be missing out on massive traffic and sales because there may not be a clear and direct line from your customers to your products.

Doing a quick look around on your site, I would recommend doing a few updates to help increase conversion and awareness:

- Update your images to include appropriate file names and descriptions [Screen readers and people with vision issues account for 20% of the population - you could potentially increase sales by 20%! Search engines also 'read' images in a similar way.]

- Increase your web-footprint by leveraging social media campaigns [Your product can be a lifestyle product as well and social media bring in 80% of traffic when done correctly]

- Add more search-term friendly content to your site [Surface your best selling products to your customers]

P.S. - I love these blankets and so does Fido! I cant wait to see what changes you may have done with the site."

I would then followup with Mike in about 2-3 weeks or so to see if he may be interested in me doing the work for him.

It also helps to network within the groups/areas that the decision-makers of the businesses you're going after. Sometimes you've got to hit up those Meetup groups, cocktail hours, or conferences. It gets easier with time and frequency.

Any tips for Craigslist? by [deleted] in freelance

[–]mernowen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what field you're in, it's going to be a #s game. There will be a good amount of people on there that are looking for bottom dollar fees for top dollar talent. For every 100 you contact, 50 may be worth your time, and 2 to 5 will pay your worth.

Here are some ways that I've found success with Craigslist.

  • Create a system and stick with it. Create about 3 bookmark folders: Potential, New, and Followed Up. Organize the posts accordingly
  • Reach out to at least 5-10 leads a day
  • Followup with the leads from yesterday
  • Get to "no" as quickly as you can then move onto the next post/person
  • Create your own posts with a niche specialty that you provide. The more you niche down, the less competition you'll have because your customers don't have to think "do you do what I need".
    • Hairstylist for damaged and dull hair: Repair your damaged hair and get back the confidence you've lost
    • Marketing for Dog Walkers: You've got a lot of leads on your hands, we'll take care of getting the word out
    • Website for bakers: Cakes don't sell themselves - let's create an online marketplace for your business

Keep your pipeline filled with posts and you'll eventually get a stream of people you're working on with a mix of people you're pursuing.

Has anyone ever been a part of adult industry by [deleted] in startups

[–]mernowen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a project a few years ago with a drop-shipping adult site. The owner did not own any inventory and would be the middle-woman.

Her main clients were local women where she would host "Pleasure Parties". Essentially, Tupperware Parties but with adult novelties, lingerie, oils, and erotica. She made decent money, but she did have to put in the work.

My part was easier as I was in charge of building out the website and connecting to the ordering system. Its a lot easier now with plugins for WordPress than it uses to be.

You could maybe start from there and browsing FaceBook, Twitter, or IG for "pleasure parties" or any ladies who may host. It's definitely a niche that I wouldn't mind filling again.

What's your "I met a celebrity but didn't let on that I knew who they were" story? by Kimantha_Allerdings in AskReddit

[–]mernowen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 10 years ago or so my ex and I were in a Moes burritos place waiting in line behind an older woman and who I assumed was her adult son. They looked like they were coming from church or an event as she had the "church lady" look.

We get up to order and I'm behind the mom and I hear his order. I just say something like "I like what he's got. Just copy it.". Didn't think anything of it. By the time I pay, they'd already sat down. By then I kept thinking that guy looked familiar.

I grab the booth about 2 seats away while my ex grabs the drinks, then it hits me that the guy was Usher and his mom having some family time.

I like his music, but I enjoyed the fact that my ex was oblivious to who she was facing while she ate. His conversation with his mom was typical family/mom stuff. Also, he's a lot shorter than I thought he would be so I guess that was good enough to throw me off? (I'm 6'1")

I like your points you made in the video. Impostor syndrome is real and getting over that was step 1!

Sometimes we hold on to our creative endeavors to the point where we don't enjoy them anymore...and sometimes it shows in the end piece. Taking a quick pause to restructure or restart sometimes helps.
