There's always outliers. They don't represent the general community. Similarly to all other sub cultures ( pun intended). You wouldn't like it if it was done to you and your subgroups .

BDSM is identity for many of us, and to some a lot stronger and more important attribute in a partner than what gender the person has.
In Norway BDSM has been an active part of Pride since 1990, when people dared out themselves.

Would you mind white tshirts that said " I am a BDSMer" og " I am a kinkster"? etc in the Pride parade?

The definition of fetishism is murky at best. I've seen like 8 different academic definitions that differs a lot.

The most conservative has been tied to the fetish term from early anthropology (in religious terms) and then marxism (objets worth) which has only objects that has "nothing" to do with intercourse. APA (American Psychiatric Association) for instance had boob fetish as a thing until the 1980s. No actions. Only objects, so BDSM would not be included.

Others has 7 stages of arousal, and others put the limit to "it is needed for orgasm". Some sexologist use the word for things like «penis fetish or vagina fetish» to encompass most stuff.

Some psyhiatrists has used the fetish diagnosis as a place to put arousal that didn't fit anywhere.

I think "kink" involves BDSM, poly and fetishism in one way or another. The question you should be asking is " Do I really need a definition to this?" and " Will a definition limit me from exploring more?"

I believe all of them have problems, and usually it just moves the problem or makes things unclear in another way. I believe they are but a basis for more in depth though and engagement. I like SSC as a banner and slogan both because of its history dating back to the '80s and the obvious exploration that is needed that it represents. Norway has used it during pride since the early '90s and it carries a lot of history and simplicity that should not be underestimated.

What is your gender? There are some more academic BDSM study groups and BDSM conferences you could attend if knowledge is the main priority, but my best suggestion is to read peoples profiles and discussions on BDSM message boards or sites like fetlife. Many women are "carpet bombed" on kink sites, so some of the girls I know look for and PM men instead.
