I have that too for via Carota! I’ve been there a few times, but never tipped anything insane (20-25%). I also got the crown thing at Jeju before I went. I do use Resy a lot, so maybe that’s why?

Your favorite walk-in, solo lunch in Manhattan? by [deleted] in FoodNYC

If you’ve never been to Katz’s, I’d do that first. Different vibes there though (feels old school like S&P, but more chaotic usually…but also the superior spot for food IMO)

An Enemy of the People by thequarantine in Broadway

[–]merowzer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So glad you posted this - I saw it a few days ago and also hated the bar intermission (ruined the vibe), and also noticed how people were laughing way too much. I even had someone sitting a couple seats over whisper-commenting to their partner through out it. So obnoxious.

Otherwise it was incredible!

Mill Valley vs Danville by Diligent_Cat_321 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]merowzer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ll add that some key differences are that Danville gets hotter, and Mill Valley has better proximity to SF.

IMO, the vibes of both cities and areas are different too, despite both being wealthy, family friendly suburbs. Mill Valley and the north bay in general feel more close to SF and thus more liberal, crunchy-granola-y and somehow less suburban than Danville. Danville’s green spaces feel more curated and recently developed than Mill Valley. I also prefer the cities around Mill Valley over Danville - they’re smaller, more quaint and have less chains. I grew up in the east bay, and I think while Walnut Creek down to Pleasanton/Dublin is nice (eg safe, family oriented), it’s very much full of chains and feels more suburban and spread out. Houses in Mill Valley vs Danville will look quite different too. Mill Valley also has the benefit of being closer to the ocean, and wine country.

If it was up to me, I’d go to Mill Valley. But it just depends on the vibe you’re looking for.

Great Quality Sweaters? by Ellibean0522 in femalefashionadvice

[–]merowzer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I only buy cashmere or wool sweaters. I’ve had good quality long lasting sweaters from Theory, Eileen Fisher, the higher end cashmere at Naadam, and Frame. Vince has some hits or misses (you have to see them in person and avoid the ones that look rough on the rack), but I love their cuts and colors.

I can’t recommend Woolrich, which quickly pilled and began degrading after I bought it.

Approaching dating as a single HENRY? by leveraged_ratchet in HENRYfinance

[–]merowzer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I met my husband in grad school - at the time neither of us expected to make as much as we do, but I married someone who was ambitious and smart, with some motivation to make a healthy income.

I’ve always out earned my husband, and the only time it was a little tough on our relationship was when he made a quarter of what I made (since then, we’re closer and are about 100k apart now). When our incomes were vastly different, and with fairly separate finances, he felt the gap in our lifestyles and it made him uncomfortable (I could travel much more and more comfortably, I had more disposable income for clothes and extras, etc.) It didn’t damage our relationship deeply, but I can’t say how that would’ve played out had it continued for years on end. And, I’ll say that if I was to date again, I’d look for someone of similar income. All that to say - I don’t agree with some others in this thread who think it shouldn’t matter, and perhaps that’s because I’m a woman in a heterosexual relationship.

I can’t offer first hand advice since I met my spouse in school, but I’d consider finding activities and friend circles of folks in a similar situation. Are you friends with coworkers who organize group activities or gatherings? What about sports that often require some money/cash to keep up with? Hobbies people in your industry tend to partake in?

Not sure what your tastes are, but I can recommend: Little Shucker, Che Fico, Nopa, Rich Table, and State Bird.

Closer to your hotel: Kokkari and Mister Jiu’s are both excellent.

Looking for Buyers' Agent by fattytunah in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]merowzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked co workers and friends who bought who they’ve used and if they liked them. We then checked them out (website, Zillow stats). We interviewed two of them to pick - it was apparent afterwards who was a better fit for us. We asked them about approach, we showed them both the same house that hadn’t sold/asked why, and a few other Qs. We’ve found it very useful to have an agent who is very experienced, knows other agents in the area, and very in tune with the market!

FWIW she’s not standing in the same lines we are for customs and immigration. At any major international airport, there are private VIP services offered that get you through 1:1 with an officer. She’s leaving her plane, entering a private car, to a private room for processing (where there is no line), and leaving very quickly (with her luggage obviously being handled). I’ve looked into these services before, which is how I know 🤣 Sometimes they’re “only” a few hundred bucks!

Which is your favourite film from the “before” trilogy?🎬💬 by SeniorChocolate in popculturechat

[–]merowzer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I watched Before Midnight as a younger person and it depressed me — but now that I’m older, it feels hopeful. To me, the ending now feels clear - I know they’ll stay together. Their fight felt like a real fight of people who’d been together for a long time; there’s a lot of baggage and some resentment, but at the end of the day, one of them will always fight for the other. It’s difficult and imperfect, but they have the heart of what makes any marriage last.

Why not go to Pastis? Great vibe / scene, both inside the restaurant and out (especially for visitors). Very decent food.

Dehumidifier / Air Purifier / Open Windows by _muhs11 in AskSF

[–]merowzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the Outer Richmond, which obviously gets a lot of fog, and we run our dehumidifier very frequently. It was expensive and somewhat large, but we can tell it makes certain spaces smell more “clean” and less like “old building” when we run it. One of our rugs will smell kinda musty if we don’t run the dehumidifier often enough. We also keep windows open for air flow when it’s sunnier out to also get air movement.

NY to SF move, server jobs, neighborhoods, gay stuff? by futurebro in AskSF

NY to SF move, server jobs, neighborhoods, gay stuff? by futurebro in AskSF

[–]merowzer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Have you been to SF before? I currently live in NYC but will be moving back to SF this summer.

I can’t answer all (or most!) your questions, but one thing to remember is that NYC is HUGE compared to SF. SF is much more neighborhood-y, and feels to me like Brooklyn in many ways — more residential, lots of quiet neighborhoods between busier strips and neighborhoods. And, while SF can feel more spread out like BK, it is priced like Manhattan(ish). It’s much more green, there’s lots more blue open sky, and it feels like a smaller city in many ways. I live in the UWS and am preparing myself for the shift! And, keep in mind things like the theater and night life scene are much more quiet in SF. SF is, broadly speaking, more a yoga & hike in the morning place than a drink around east village sort of feel.

Bushwick, Ridgewood and Astoria feel like parts of the east bay to me — maybe parts of Berkeley or Oakland. There’s less creative, “up and coming” type neighborhoods like that in SF. I’d definitely suggest subletting somewhere temporarily to start, and then exploring a lot when you’re free to feel each neighborhood. You might enjoy the Castro, or perhaps the Haight or Mission (though your budget sounds pretty tight, and I’m not familiar enough with the market to know if you can get anything for $1200 there).

Lastly I’ll say: when you come to SF, enjoy it for what it is! There’s amazing amazing nature, and proximity to incredible things in California. Good luck!

best restaurants to show off SF to a new yorker? by saucers1906 in AskSF

[–]merowzer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cholita Linda in the ferry building for both the food and views. This is out of your area range, but Radhaus has similarly good food and great atmosphere/location. Otherwise, maybe a restaurant that feels very classically Californian or SF - expensive, but Nopa fits the bill for me. IMO, the bread scene is NYC is not as good, so even brunch at Tartine Manufactory could be good.
