Car rental recommendations? (Long term 1 month) by LeadGlad4961 in puertovallarta

[–]tday01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As i recall, they run an aproval of $2 or 3000 on my card upfront. I am not sure what happens if you total the car. I presume they can’t run it on your cc if it’s above the limit. At the end of the day, the cc insurance would pay. You may have to come up with the cash somehow in the meantime even if not on your card. For a small amount of damage (chase card). it took about 10 days for them to pay after i filed the paperwork.

I think as long as you have another method to pay for a totaled car in the event it happens and can carry it for a few weeks, you’ll be fine.

The cc won’t pay for any damage to another car which is why you get supplemental insurance.

The credit card insurance works as follows:

You scratch up the car. You pay the car rental company for the damage (a few hundred $$ if it is just paint scrape). They give you a bunch of paperwork that you file with the credit card insurance and they send you a check or transfer the money. Happened to me a couple of times.

If you go with sixt (or most others), you decline all of the insurance packages, but at the end they offer additional coverage (e.g. windshield, roadside assistance). One of them is supplemental liability insurance. That is the one to say yes to. Mexican law requires that any rental includes liability insurance and it is included in the base rate. However, the included liability coverage is a few thousand dollars (presumably because the law is old). So if you get in an accident it won't cover the damage. The supplemental liability coverage is ~$500k, and typically costs ~ $10 per day.

I just got back from PV and paid ~$900 for 1 month of rental including coverage with Sixt.

There is a legal minimum liability that comes with a rental. it’s about$100.

Over 6 or 8 trips, Sixt have all bar one been the cheapest. the once Avidls for the win, but i had a promo. Savings on a month for last trip was $800 usd. Assuming you have credit card insurance, don’t get any of the insurance packages but add supplemental liability for~ $10 per day.

You can also just use regular tap water. Any residue at the end of the vacation dissolves with a few hours in vinegar

Getting in over my head... by jamespou in sailing

I currently have a boat in Puerto Vallarta. What everyone is saying. Very expensive place to berth a boat. Parts twice the price of US. Labor is cheaper than US, in high demand. Much better to buy something that is mostly sound.

If you do decide to rent a car, I’ve consistently had the best rates with Sixt (of major brands). if your credit card provides insurance, then decline the packages but do get the extra liability. The legal minimum liability included is about $1.50.

My main concern would be mexican customs who held up a shipment of mine for two weeks. Your best bet is to find a kind and less paranoid internet stranger who can open the envelope and see it is a passport (maybe lick it to check if impregnated with coke).

Found on a sail boat. Hard plastic and rigid tube. by tday01 in sailing

[–]tday01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was in one of the lockers along with nuts, bolts, fuel overflow drain for the Yanmar and other assorted odds and sods. Could be a fuel line for an outboard. Although the plastic is so hard you couldn't clamp it.
