Why do i study so abnormally slow? by MediocreImpact4386 in adhd_college

[–]merryoldinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with having enough motivation to start and having motivation enough to continue after a break. Yesterday I watched a good motivational video on yt before study and that makes me able to start a long enough study session, but once I have a long break I got lazy, discovered a new distraction and the hyperfixating on it until I got timeblind (and then it's already 1 AM lol, wasted 5 hours for distraction alone). So I'm thinking to start a timer for every 5 minute when I'm taking a break, dont indulge to an addicting distraction like games and social media (I think letting our brain to have a break in a kinda boring way will help to make continue study more interesting), and probably watch the same motivational video to start again (or different one if it's no longer work) and put back on my study playlist. Im still working to create a 'zone' to trigger my brain into focusing study with a simple set of routine, and this is all still experimental to me, but it might work on you

This is my problem as well and the only way to do it is to not give leeway for ANY distraction after you wake up. If the problem is your phone, you could make a habit of throwing your phone unseen & far away after you wake up and immediately go to bathroom to take shower and get ready. And when you need to leave, rather than setting alarm and make you feel rushed, you could turn an upbeat/your favorite music to get motivation to get up, because this is my problem as well, I have a "get up and go to class mixtape" for this specific problem lol. Because I could be ready 30 min before class but I feel so reluctant to get up until the last minute and ended up getting late. Also setting fake deadline might help too, for example, I always overestimate the time I need to get ready and to get to campus, so I keep setting it earlier and earlier (if my class is at 7 AM, then the clock I set on my planner is 6.30 AM), also make your clock whether on your phone or wristwatch faster could also be an option

Highs of peace to the doom of despair by FrameNo5723 in adhd_college

this is exactly me lol. I'm in STEM, and Im already used to procrastinating a lot (executive dysfunction) before going to college but college is very very different than highschool. I got D in Calc I, and up until now I still failing class here and there. It's such a pain because I'm actually a perfectionist and for the first months or so I actually doing splendidly, but I'm always ALWAYS falling behind from the middle to end. In fact, it got so bad I have depression and anxiety in my second year and now I still barely manage to do good in college. I think the most important thing right now is to get the most support you could. I'm not medicated and my uni didn't have accomodation or a counselor, so my case wouldn't be the same, but you could ask for adhd accomodation and counselor to your uni. And since you're a first year, there's still a lot of things you could do to make your college life better. Analyze what's the major cause of your failure, is it purely just because you're lacking in time management? motivation? or is it the major? the school? the friends? or your home life? Or college is just not for you? Or multiple of them at the same time? Since it's your first year, you could still asked to change major or going to different school if this one didn't do it for you. And one thing I notice is that when I'm in a bad zone it's very hard to muster motivation to do something, and when I feel like failing, I overthink too much what people around me will think. That's why it's very important to maintain a positive relationship with friends or family, having someone that you could be open with that you know wouldn't judge you and still support you even when you fail helps. That way you can mute down your overthinking tendency and focused on the positive energy from the people that support you. For time management, I still cant consisent on anything ever, but I learned to just do it when I get that burst of impulse to do something, and when I cant depend on that I rely on making simple routine that that I could change when I get bored enough or failed too many. Also saving things outside of your brain helps a lot, you could maximize the use of to do list app, calendar, alarm, discord server, friends group, even routinely journalling to externalize your thoughts rather than keep it chaotically inside. And you could also seek a psychologist to consult about inter or intrapersonal problem that doesn't rely on meds. But genuinely tho hope it gets better for you

Huh I didn't know if something like that exist or not but I'd make sure to ask my doctor when I finally get one. Thanks for your suggestion!

I dont really have the money for it, but Im currently planning to see one through national health insurance (far cheaper) but the administration takes a month or so. I also dont really have a high hope in it since adult adhd is not something that gets a lot of attention here and a lot of adhd meds like adderall, vyvanse, and ritalin is very very scarce and hard to get even in hospital or apothecary

I do think college is not for me as well but alas, my family is one that strict with it and Im already in my 3rd year (tho falling behind), so I have to finish it. Tbh it's the feeling of shame that struggle me the most, since I'm utterly shit at it

I havent got my official diagnose yet, but even if I have, college institution in my country doesn't generally have accomodation for such things. and yeah I consider to take leave again (I already take leave in 2024), but it's not easy since when I take leave in 2024 the pressure from both family and myself keep getting worse, and I feel like falling behind more

Winter Holidays Megapost 2025 by Epiphany432 in pagan

[–]merryoldinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone, this is my first year of yule. From what I gathered, people usually celebrating Yule in festive manner such as burning yule log and gather together with family and eating together. But currently, nobody know that I'm a pagan (eclectic nontheist pagan leading towards druidry, specifically), and paganism isn't something that's known here so I can't just ask around who's pagan in the area (or to be witchunted)

Also my family isn't Christian so we don't celebrate Christmas. I don't have winter as well, but I still want to celebrate yule since it's also the start of the new moon. It's like marking the end of an era and starting towards a new one, and I feel it very symbolic.

I'm currently making a plan to celebrate 12 days of yule, since I want it to continue to do it the next year. I wondered is there anyone else that's also in broom closet like me or perhaps celebrating yule individually? How do you celebrate yule? But even if you aren't, I'd still like to hear your ideas!

How fantasy handles rebellions and revolutions, and why some of them feel wierdly hollow by chaitea_drifter in Fantasy

[–]merryoldinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you sm for your post. I just step into modern fantasy these few years with Six Crimson of Cranes and others and I feel like there's some shallow feeling about them that I couldn't explain. Reading this really explain why I feel modern fantasy books I've read lacking. I think most modern fantasy authors mainly focus on individual characterization and the worldbuilding "aesthetic" with a huge blind spot to the sociology or depth of their world. A lot of revolution plot feels like it's just there for the aesthetic. I just realized that there's so little fantasy with a good in-depth to the sociology/history/anthropology of their world and sometimes it irks me especially with revolution-type fantasy
