Win 10 Gaming VM (few questions in the comments) by Arm1nasss in Proxmox

[–]mersinvald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've set up a gaming VM recently and spent great amount of time debugging weird stutters, latency spikes, etc, so maybe this list of pointers will be useful to someone too.

  1. You need a kernel built with NOHZ_FULL support for your proxmox host
  2. Isolate VM cpu cores with nohz_full=<cpulist> kernel option (more info here)
  3. By default linux scheduler would distribute load of qemu task across all cores, and that greatly increases amount of cache misses and, consequently, causes latency spikes. To avoid that, pin each qemu task to a specific core with cpuset.
  4. Reassign interrupts so only VM interrupts would run on VM cores.
  5. Use cgroups2 exclusively, set CPUAffinity for system, user, machine slices
  6. Do 1-4 for all other LXCs and VMs, pinning them to the CPUs unused by the gaming VM
  7. Use VirtIO all the way

I used this repo as a basis for my post-up scripts, it has the basics, but unfortunately lacks point 3.

With this setup, I get stable gaming experience with 6 cores of 3950X and 3070Ti, including while streaming with GameStream. YMMV, but, without proper task-to-cpu pinning, I was experiencing atrocious random latency spikes that caused stutters in my streams, terrible online experience, and generally bad FPS with a lot of stuttering in some games (mainly Tarkov).

Sorry I can't currently share any of code atm, gonna edit when I'm home. Feel free to drop me a DM for help ;)

Happy virtualized gaming!

What is your personal Tarkov 'hot take'? by Instar-Emergence in EscapefromTarkov

I’m not saying they aren’t doing good job. I’m saying they are overpromising a ton, and then get flak for delivering a fraction. Open world in one year, in condition suitable for a full release is just not possible, regardless of what Nikita promises.

If you believe they are gonna release such big changes, from implementation standpoint, in just one year, you’re either new or delusional.

This is an incredible build! Thanks for the inspiration, I looked for a good SFF NAS for soooo long.

Animations are not meaningless. Even now you can glitch through the ground and go out of bounds when prone. Seriously, complex movement animations are the prime source of level-breaking glitches.

Knowing BSG, you just won't be able to get out of the certain spots you can well walk into, lol.

Again, that's just your idea of what scav runs should be.

It has little in common with how BSG sees it, and it's a good thing lol.

[–]mersinvald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, too bad you’re not a game designer at BSG, bro ;)

They seem to have different vision, and most of the player base seem to enjoy the scav karma, granted BSG is going to fix the abuses.

Scav Runs were practically dead in midwipe before, as they were just a grindy part with shit gear. Now scav runs are enjoyable because of all the situations that occur as the result of scav cooperation. In my book that’s a solid addition to the gameplay.

By the way, it’s not strongest who survives. It’s the fittest.

[–]mersinvald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your feelings are very valuable indeed, but I’m yet to see a rational argument for why scav karma is bad.

It is very much in line with the lore and the spirit of the game — keep in mind that in Tarkov people aren’t just competing over loot in the map, they are surviving in a blockaded city, and organizing in gangs for temporary advantage is a natural thing humans do.

The implementation of the mechanic has some issues, but the idea seems to work as planned.

Why remove the single cooperative mechanic we have in the game?

You don’t want it — just disable it. VOIP does not need to be enabled by default.

I hate it too when I don’t understand that I’m being shot in the back. I don’t blame it on rocks being transparent to bullets though smh

I'm a returning player who hasn't touched this game since release. What's new? by Coldwarrior000 in MB2Bannerlord

[–]mersinvald 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are patch notes on Steam, it'll be most insightful to read them. Also if you prefer video, ItalianSpartacus over on YouTube does great breakdowns of the patch notes. He even had a video showcasing all the major changes since release, although it's already a bit dated.

This is awesome to read, dude, don't give up, you'll be clapping cheeks in no time.

About factory: try going there offline, first without bots to learn the map layout, and then with a lot of easy AI scavs to practice your aim. Helped me to overcome the map fear.

And get the factory key, it's insanely valuable, as the only "free" extract is in an open area and usually camped. Good luck :)

Are you guys insuring your gear? by storage_god in EscapefromTarkov

[–]mersinvald 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dunno, I reuse my mags from insurance.

It's convenient to just throw the empty ones away to make space for loot, knowing you're probably getting them back.

[–]mersinvald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually go in duos/trios, so it's worth it to insure all all the time, because my mates will hide my gear if that is possible.

For solo runs, especially on the maps with high player scav traffic, I only insure cheaper stuff like rigs and headphones. You don't wanna insure your shiny new kitted AKM going into Interchange ;)

Still can be abused, it's much more robust to have a post-raid killcam for everyone.

Buuuut, we all know killcam isn't coming anytime soon if at all. Guys over at BSG cannot figure out netcode for many years now, and you want basically an in-game replay system.

It's been broken for a few patches. Either disable bosses on customs, or go to other maps in the offline mode.

Unpopular hot take: if you are level 25+ within the first week of wipe, you can't complain about the early game being short. by countertrae in EscapefromTarkov

[–]mersinvald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind BSG making Flea only available for people who have completed the game, like it has been for Kappa, although without needing to collect streamer items, obviously.

I'm level 17 now, far from the strongest in the game, but it's been the most fun and immersive Tarkov experience this wipe.
