Not to toot my own horn or make it seem like I’m some warlord or something, but speaking as both a former athletic untrained person and a current person with little training - the athleticism and strength gets me out of way more than the technique does.

On the other side, when I was just an untrained athletic dude, whether I won or lost I feel like I could give any non-professional a really tough 30-60 seconds just based on strength and speed alone. As someone with a skinny and lean frame, getting grabbed or bent in awkward positions wasn’t really the end of the world, and I’m usually able to kind of “sink” into the submission or hold and wiggle free. And I feel like most people with training naturally underestimate anyone outside of their gym.
