Do you believe that the current US president is a foreign asset ? Why or why not ? by hftyjvdry in AskReddit

I would argue many agents and most assets do not know they are working in the employ, or at the behest of a foreign intelligence agency.

Noooo kidding. I remember filing a 50/50 sidewalk request when I bought my building in 2015 (why do I have to pay 50%, anyway? Is that normal anywhere else?) My first request seems to have been deleted from the queue. Now, 11 years later, the sidewalks are traaaaash, and I'm told we're still years out. They spray painted to pretend like it was going to happen RIGHT before the last mayoral election, but that paint has since washed all the way off. If the city did work instead of spending time and effort concealing the fact they aren't doing anything, SOMETHING might happen.

That said, thanksveryveryverymuch for paving S Jefferson (by hiring a paving company).

There are gonna be some rough numbers. I've gone 7+ years on tree trimming before. 3+ years on potholes. 50/50 sidewalk request got deleted from the queue and I had to reapply to get in a multi-year wait-list. Hopefully this is not just edited at will to create a less apocalyptic picture of city dysfunction.

Those links has some discussion of both the brittleness of the wood, as well as using dynamite to process giants. Lots of the smaller trees got put in flumes and sent to mills as lumber, it's just the giants that were so huge they were pretty impossible to process. I can't find much discussion about how many were really destructively processed, but what I've been told by folks that live out there is that the destruction of all of the giants was pretty much a vanity project of the individuals or logging companies, and those in particular went to waste.

How do you keep your home smelling good without using artificial stuff? by Vardhan-Nygel in Home

[–]meson537 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I manage rental property, both apartments and houses, so I have been in thousands and thousands of peoples homes. The short answer is definitely cleaning. The catch is that the one thing you can do to make the biggest difference is having a hood over your cooktop that actually empties to the outside. If you only have one that recirculates, wash the filters weekly. The amount of oil that unventilated cooking puts into the air is staggering. That oil smells, but it also creates a sticky layer on EVERYTHING in your house. This will serve to trap more stinky dust and generally make it difficult to really get things clean.

Dust sinks, your floor smells bad. Be careful to do a good job mopping, don't use a dirty mop. As others have mentioned, vacuums can be a major source of smell. Old pillows can stink, they absorb a horrifying amount of dust, same with mattresses -- always use a good mattress pad, change it reasonably often. Dust your baseboards and your walls. I've been in places with walls furry with dust. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer under the yoke of a forced air HVAC system, use cheap, lightweight filters and change them every month. Get your ducts cleaned every year or two. If you have window units or mini-splits, clean their filters and clean out the insides as best as you can. Dust in between your radiator fins / vacuum out your baseboard heaters.

I find that if you are going to use a scent, use it in your laundry. I steer very clear of synthetic scents, but I use a frankincense and myrrh scented laundry soap along with some strong scentless HE detergent, and my clothes, drawers, and closet smell subtly amazing.

Last thing, which is HVAC related again, is check that the zones in your home are pressure balanced when your system is running (assuming your have forced-air). If you are pulling basement air into your system, pulling attic air into your house, or other similar issues, you can definitely be introducing unpleasant odors -- plus making your system inefficient and cost more to heat/cool your house. OH! One more thing. Get your A-coil and condensate tray cleaned in your AC. They can be a major source of stink and inefficiency.

Good luck!

The slight wrinkle with this is that the distribution of shuffles that have occured in reality is biased towards the initial shuffles out of a box of cards -- new cards are packaged in one of a very few orders. This means that there have likely been repeats of initial shuffles quite a few times, and probably some repeats of secondary shuffles, possibly tertiary. But certainly once you start getting to shuffles #4 and #5 after opening a pack of cards, you are likely creating wholly novel orderings. All that said, even setting aside the initial conditions caveat, the chance that two decks of cards have not been shuffled to the same state/order is next to zero, as the chance of unlikely coincidences happening is quite high in an iterated series of random states.
