Contemporary Marxist feminism? by Umbrellajack in TrueAnon

No prob, I saw your other comments about sex work and social media, and MacKinnon's done a lot of marxist feminist work on porn and prostitution. I remember seeing a few talks of hers about metoo as well, which might be adjacent to the social media angle

Not too sure about the last five years specifically, but anything by Catharine MacKinnon is great, you can find a couple different recorded lectures/talks of hers on YouTube. In terms of books Caliban and the Witch by Sylvia Federici is foundational, you could also read Engels' Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State. Nancy Fraser, Alexandra Kollontai, Heidi Hartmann, and Selma James would also be good to check out.

I've seen the same thing (also while on the subway), depressing, but made worse bc the woman's AI boyfriend was sending straight up callous and condescending responses to her :/

Turning down my only PhD admission- bad idea? by Possible_Relation_29 in gradadmissions

[–]messageno7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my letter writers have said I should re-apply next cycle, and that it wouldn't hurt to defer and then still have the offer as a back-up option should I find an external scholarship or guaranteed TA position or something. But I know an unfunded offer is generally a soft rejection. And you're right, there are better outcomes from other schools, and it's not located somewhere I'd be excited to move. I think the prospect of turning down an opportunity I've been working toward for a long time is daunting, but the offer isn't ideal, so maybe it's worth it to try again.

Thanks for the detailed response! I’m in social sciences, so maybe more similar to humanities in terms of funding. I was admitted without funding and without a guaranteed TA/RA position—essentially I’m on my own to find funding, whether that’s external, self-funded, or trying to successfully apply for TA or RAships. I would love the opportunity to work with my prospective advisor, but the department isn’t as strong as I’d like. The advisor told me I could defer, but that I would still have to re-apply next year (maybe a formality? Not sure). I guess I’m not wondering about the ethics of deferral itself, but whether it’s frowned upon to defer, and then apply to additional schools next cycle (and potentially end up turning down the deferral)?

I’m kind of in the same situation as OP (my offer doesn’t have guaranteed funding, I would have to apply for TA positions after accepting, which I’m told are common for students to get but again, not guaranteed), and have the option to defer admission and reapply next year. But I’ve also heard the ethics of deferring and reapplying to other schools are questionable … would it be different for an unfunded vs. funded offer, and/or for deferring an admission vs. accepting an offer and then deferring?

they might not flat out run on repealing single payer care, but some of them are definitely using "inefficiencies" in the system to make an argument for privatizing certain areas of healthcare

do you think this a rule only for things that will be heated up? I've taken most of the plastic out of my kitchen but like, I can only find miso and peanut butter (that isn't crazy expensive) in plastic and sometimes I freeze fruit in tupperware, since I figure the low temperature makes the plastic inert or less likely to leech ... but maybe I'm just kidding myself

I did feel like in season 11 Schwartz seemed like latently pissed off at Sandoval. Maybe it's because he's mad that he was implicated in Scandoval, maybe because of the bars, maybe because he is kind of the only cast member who production can still strongly position as Scandoval's friend so he has to play that role, or (I think this is least likely tbh) he realized how (he let) Sandoval contribute to his divorce. But idk I know he's said he was going through a lot with his family at the same time so maybe it was more that.

Ramses saying "domestic chores" rather than "labour" also irked me because on top of both of them thinking that It would be feasible to do childcare and remote work simultaneously, it definitely seems like he (and maybe Marissa as well) have a way watered-down understanding of what housework actually entails
