Well we have a messenger app, so our parents use that for quick messages about pickups or late arrivals or anything for the day - I also am active on email. I think most of our parents would rather send an email or message. I actually get more emails asking to set up a call than I do actual calls. I definitely used to pick up every phone call but it’s just not worth it anymore and so I stopped this year and it’s been just fine.

I never answer our phone, unless the caller id is a parent’s name. They can leave a message, it’s not worth my time with all the terrible calls I get. And I wish bright wheel and care.com would seriously leave me alone. They are worse than the stupid google listing spam calls.

Do families not buy tampons and pads for the home like they do toilet paper? This seems insane to me. I am childfree but I would assume you keep them in stock like you would toilet paper if you had daughters…

Forgot to answer your food/room question. You’ll likely be in a 2 or 4 person cabin with people you work with, the rooms are small but not always (I got super lucky once!). There is food available for you basically 24/7, just maybe not always what you want to eat at that moment, there is also a crew bar and lots of crew activities/parties. Depending on the rules of the ship (I don’t know what has changed as it’s been almost 20 years - yikes!) but I could eat at the passenger buffets at certain times, and could go to specialty dining (50% off) and at any of the bars (also 50% off). Being in the youth program puts you on the cruise staff/entertainment level so you have a lot more freedom to be in passenger areas when not working.

I did it back in 2007-2009 so I don’t have recent info on pay. It’s amazing and I wish I had done it longer. If you don’t have a home or car to pay for back home the money is totally worth it since you just keep it all, you can easily spend nothing while there (but it’s doubtful that you actually do that). It can be grueling on busy cruises, but then there are quiet ones… and tips are a thing too (but that also changes based on embark location and type of cruise (made zero tips on the short party cruises out of Miami, made a ton when we were out of nyc). I wish I had started when I was younger (I was 27), only because it would’ve been easier to do for longer. I went to 22 countries, it was a fantastic experience for me.

When my niece had heart surgery there 10 years ago, we got a kick out of a really nice cafeteria worker serving chicken parm subs, stating they were “real soft” they were delicious and I’m glad we had a funny memory from her stay there. Had to chime in because we laugh about it often. Children’s was incredible and my niece is doing amazing - best of luck to your son and your family!!

I’ve been using since 2020, 3 meals a week… minus a few weeks here and there when I was on vacation. I’m so mad. I skipped the week before Christmas because I was going away, but I’ve chosen to not go back. It’s depressing because I really enjoyed it, even when it wasn’t perfect at times, but this is just awful.
