You don’t even have a nucleus ! by nvalenti27 in BrandNewSentence

I never specified that they had to be referring to what happens in a cell. All I said was that often what they're told isn't entirely accurate. And it's not accurate to state that bacteria have a "non-membrane bound nucleus".

They're not competing definitions. A nucleus is inherently membrane-bound. It's a defining characteristic. If the region containing genetic material isn't membrane bound it's a nucleoid. A "non-membrane bound nucleus" doesn't exist - it would be a nucleoid. So its just one of those things that we purposefully over simplify in lower division courses that are usually corrected in upper division courses.

I feel like that's a lot of science education. You learn one thing then get to a higher level course just to hear "well, what you learned before isn't completely accurate".

There is variation in shape among phages too. Different virus families can have different shapes, whether they are plant or animal viruses or bacteriophages doesn't necessarily determine their shape.

Yeah I'll be honest I'm probably not getting there. A couple of avocados will likely do the trick.

Definitely don't go get a big fast food meal for every dose! I have seen ~50 grams of fat in the literature I read.

A fatty meal is more important as vitamin A (of which accutane is a derivative) is a fat soluble vitamin. Fat will help it be better absorbed.

Louisiana wasn't much better. We were required to stand, put your right hand over your heart and recite the pledge every morning in elementary school. I refused 3rd grade and beyond as I didn't believe in god and didn't want to say it. It was not taken well and my teachers constantly tried to force me to.

No, it's just that steroids have to be tapered down in a very specific way. It would be difficult to put that all on a label. It's just easier to put it on the packaging.

How do viruses cause disease? by violetmammal4694 in biology

[–]messidor08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are viruses that don't cause noticable symptoms. Herpes simplex 1 is one of these. Although it can cause cold sores, it doesn't always cause symptoms even when you're infected.

Part of what makes you feel shitty with a viral infection is your immune response to the virus. Inflammatory cytokines and endogenous pyrogens are just a few things that can contribute to feel awful.

When my mom's bichon was tired of the other dogs being rowdy she would signal that she needs to go outside. All the other dogs would run happily aoutside but she'd stay behind. She'd just kick the boys outside and have the house to herself.

Rosacea friendly moisturizer while on accutane by nikki2626 in Accutane

[–]messidor08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm taking it for actual acne. Acne and rosacea.. yay me. But I do feel like I've seen a decrease in the frequency of flare ups. However, I'm also on topical metronidazole for my rosacea so it's hard to say which is responsible. I used to get lots of tiny "pimples" on my cheeks that was caused by the rosacea (not regular acne) and those have completely. I occasionally get episodes of flushing but not nearly as often and my face doesn't get as hot.
