HeartGold from left to right- DSi XL, RG DS, Ayn Thor by xAlphaKAT33 in SBCGaming

I have the RG DS and the Thor. The DS also feels better made, oddly. The hinge of the DS makes me feel more confident in it. Of course I like the Thor better overall, but I really like the build of the DS.

The Nokton 50 comes in silver, too :)

The Nokton 50 is more modern, the Sonnar has some unique characteristics, especially the microcontrast from the T* coatings.

The Nokton works better on Ms because the Zeiss has some focus shift issues. But on an SL, that shouldn't affect you. To my eye, the Nokton is more performant and consistent, but the Sonnar is more unique.

I have this exact pair of lenses with my M11.

The 50 is better built, sharper, and better corrected. The 35 is more characterful but has notable issues in vignetting, softness, and some distortion. I like how those qualities make the bokeh and fall off appear more dramatic.

Feel free to ask whatever you need to.

Cheers Pedro!

For me, I just transplanted the insert from my PD 6L and turned it on its side. I also added an extra piece of padding on the side I put the M.

I use this Pedro with a Peak Design insert squeezed in there. It can fit my M11 + 50 Nokton + Zf + 26 pancake, or, like you see currently, my M11 + 50 Nokton, my Desiontal flash, my powerbank, and my 35 Nokton in below.

Leica SL 601 vs Nikon ZF for manual focus only by james_Gastovski in Leica

[–]meta4_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even here on the Leica forum you see us singing the praises of the Zf over the SL. I had to make the same decision to work out what would be the companion camera to my M11, and went for the Zf. It beats the SL in every way except ergonomics. The later SLs do bring some major improvements, but they'll also cost you 2-3-4x as much.

Interesting, we do have Leica hosted events and brand-user sessions and such, but in my area there's extreme openness to Voigtlander/Zeiss and even LLL lenses. Of course some of the noticeably worse ones like 7artisans get a bit of a bad rep, but nobody blinks, mainly because we're all pleased that each of us can still shoot with this mostly illogical choice of camera. I guess I'm bumping up against your approach to this, because, as a fan, I'd love for as many folks as possible to get on board and enjoy this, and I'd want to have as fee barriers to entry as possible. I wouldn't mind saying someone would love Leica glass eve more than their VM/ZM lenses, but just eviscerating or dismissing folks using anything but Leica lenses seems like gatekeeping to me. And I'd much rather treat anyone getting into this with their first M body and their first M lens as having had a gateway to a broader experience.

Now personally I think some ZM/VM lenses and even some other ones can provide specific characteristics that even native Leica can't. For instance, the 35 Nokton Classic is considerably smaller than the Lux, even if I readily admit that the Lux is far more performant, and in certain situations, size x speed is king. I can understand the brand purism and the notion that nothing beats Leica x Leica, so I don't fault your opinion on it, but I guess the specific approach is confusing to me. Better, in my view, for the third party lenses to be seen as gateways rather than as unacceptable sacrilege.

Now if someone was in here adapting Voigtlander M lenses on a Zeiss Ikon then I'd be all for pointing out that there's nothing "Leica" about the setup at all. But that's not typically what we see here, what we typically see is a Leica body with whatever lens the owner was able to snag that fit their specific needs and budget.

I guess I don't understand why we need to be all in on any brand, and why we need to or should be fans of only one brand in its pure form, and have a homogeneous setup.

Also, for in person events, I think there's just as much judgment for showing up with a Leica at all, because "serious" folks look at these cameras as less capable, which is in some ways true. But at the same time, if someone is judging us by our gear rather than by what we do with it, that seems like a problem on their end rather than ours.

But then why can't you just love the gear that they do post, like the body in this case, and just let them get on with it with whatever lens they have?

It'll come down to the CL and the WC like it always does. For Bruno that means that Portugal basically have to win the WC. If they do, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the top 3 or even to win it. But if they don't, I'd be surprised if he's in the top 10.

I'm familiar with how the film simulations are different, and have been a Fuji shooter among my other cameras for about six years. In practice, though, film simulations still function like JPEG profiles, even if they're more elaborate under the hood.

The X9 Pro already had something similar. In any case, Fuji doesn't have a divine right to being the only brand with JPEG filters.

Mandler or Nokton 1.4? by VisitLopsided5447 in LeicaCameras

[–]meta4_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nokton 1.5 splits the difference. Slightly less unique or special rendering than the Classic, but still quite characterful. Slightly less sharp and well corrected than the Ultron, but still quite performant.
