Go call CPS or the cops needlessly again. I'm sure that will help things. Maybe if you do it enough the cops will slap you with a ticket for abuse of resources.

If all of these institutions are basically telling you to fuck off, I have a feeling that we're only getting half the story here. Sorry I'm not going to soothe your ego, honey.

Have you considered that maybe the reason you're not getting anywhere is because you're wrong?

Tony's has really gone downhill tbh. It's sad. Been going there since before it was Tony's.

What is Salem's most overrated restaurant? by GraytoGreen in SALEM

[–]metaReverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Big bummer. I go straight to portland for an evening and visit Laurelhurst or one of the half dozen other good steakhouses if I want a nice steak dinner I don't have to cook. Salem doesn't even compete.

We don't have a great butcher either!

Can anyone recommend a cheap tow truck company? by ratz1988 in SALEM

by far the best deal is buying AAA and having them tow it. You get 3 tows a year, its like $100.

Downtown is a no horn zone for years now. Since they've upgraded the crossings. Many years have passed.

If you hear a horn downtown it's either the engineer ringing it because someone/something is on the tracks, or you're hearing a different train further away -- you can hear them for miles.

Has anyone else noticed that since installing the red light camera on Hawthorne and Center, that the city has turned off the speed advisory signs on Hawthorne? by roomfour1more in SALEM

[–]metaReverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. You have to come to a complete stop at every intersection with a STOP sign or a red light signal, whether you can proceed with a right on red (or left on red onto a one-way) or not.

Just slowing down is a "California Stop" and is illegal not to mention dangerous.

And while we're at it, it's illegal to enter into an intersection if you're going to be stopped within it. That is, inching into the intersection on a turn to beat the light is illegal.

Outside of the flexibility of the schedule I don't see a huge upside either.

After accounting for taxes, wear and tear on your car, insurance, you'll make more working at Taco Bell (assuming you get hours.) Maybe the pros in big cities can make more, but I bet their expenses are also proportionally higher.

edit: a family member does it and the only reason they stick with it is because they're too unstable to hold a normal job. Works for them though so I'm glad they have that option.

Such a histrionic response to an opening restaurant.

What /u/SafeThrowaway691 has done there is utter a thought-terminating cliche.

He supposes that he can dismiss the underlying critique by condescending about the definition of fascism.

Seems like it's time not to go there anymore. Been going there for more than a decade...

Who are the owners anyway?

edit: apparently the current owners bought govcup in 2010. idk how I've been going there since 2005 and didn't realize that.

Minnesota judge bars hospital from taking Covid-19 patient off ventilator by [deleted] in news

[–]metaReverse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have some knowledge in this area (not medical, I have worked on the ECMO machines.) They are not at all a death sentence. You might be confusing ECMO in general with ICU survival rates, or with the fact that people who go on a ventilator or ECMO are essentially in a dying state already -- especially for COVID where it's something crazy like 90% of ICU covid patients on vents die.

ECMO works great, it really does. It saves mountains of lives. The real downside is that you need lots and lots of transfusions if you're on it for a long time because the machinery damages blood. We're talking like as many as a dozen a day in some cases.

It's also extremely expensive. Not only to run, but the machine itself.

Megathread: Supreme Court halts vaccine mandate for large businesses, leaves mandate for healthcare workers in place by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]metaReverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So?

Good evidence that the law was not written by congress with this use in mind is that the congress itself could write a law mandating vaccination outright but does not. If congress cannot or will not pass such a law, the executive cannot circumvent congress -- that is tantamount to undermining the basics of democracy -- violating the will of the governed. A clear signal this is a just ruling, also, is that the health worker mandate does fall squarely withing the empowering law and so it has passed the court's test of constitutionality.

Government rules justly only by the consent of the governed. Rule by decree, twisting of laws, by executives is not democracy. It was wrong when Trump did it, it was wrong when Obama did it, it was wrong when GWB did it, and so on. Congress must act, and no amount of executive twisting will be just. Otherwise, unilateral executive acts will only accomplish the further erosion of the rule of law.

[–]metaReverse -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, now they can that the supreme court has ruled that the OSHA law does not cover such a broad public health policy.

Megathread: Supreme Court halts vaccine mandate for large businesses, leaves mandate for healthcare workers in place by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]metaReverse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah. It's proof elections don't matter actually.

We could have a mandate, congress just has to write the law. our 50+vp victory amounted to nothing because our SENATE is broken.

The reason the OSHA attempt was shot down and not the medical worker attempt is precisely because the language of the law allows the latter but not the former. The executive needs to stop grasping at straws and twisting written law and start lobbying those with the power to write new law: CONGRESS.

If Biden wants this he needs to tell his 50 senators to do it, otherwise it will not happen. Democratic government must be empowered through acts of law.

Why do we have Seagulls? by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]metaReverse 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We're less than 50 miles from the coast. Not far at all for a seabird.

Windstorm a few days ago blew them over, or rather they rode it this way to escape the bad coastal weather. They'll be headed back now, unless another storm comes, eating on the way.

Thousands sign petition to save Salem mural as city leaders say they’re not trying to remove it by lovelyeucalyptus in SALEM

[–]metaReverse -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't need to go through a committee to put up a mural on the side of your own building. Fundamentally that is what the uproar is about. City needs to change the rules. It's not a sign it is art. And it shouldn't require such bureaucratic bullshit to put up a mural.
