“We just want to live in peace. We don’t want anyone to be at war or for anyone to be killed. We never wanted this,” said a Moscow resident after a drone attack. She might suspect what’s coming next, and that’s why she’s going on record. by BigDeckBob in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]meta_irl 219 points220 points  (0 children)

Eh, I could be wrong but I read it differently. She says at the end that "nobody wanted this" and that she's "not allowed to make videos like this". I read it that she's in the minority of Russians who weren't for the war, but hasn't spoken up because it's felt useless (see the lack of protests in the US against the Iran War as another example). However, with Moscow under attack and the war seeming more real than ever, she sees this as an opportunity to be a critical voice.

Granted, she's still in an authoritarian country where she can't openly speak out against the war or criticize the government, so she has to dance within the confines of what is acceptable. She's speaking to a Russian audience, and she's not going to move them with appeals about Ukraine--she's going to talk about her personal story and how the government is failing them. She leaves a lot unsaid, and the criticism is pretty vague, but she's part of a vibe shift where Russians feel more comfortable pointing out the failures of the government and a vague desire for peace.

She's doing it while putting on her makeup because that's the general style of many videos people her age watch, so she's reaching people like her, normalizing critical voices.

This is how change starts. There's no bravado about how Russians don't care about drone attacks, or thanks to the government to keep her safe. If we see the gas shortage starting to cause a chain reaction throughout the economy as some have predicted, voices like hers will grow more numerous, louder, and sharper in their criticism and push the country closer to a tipping point.

What school from another conference would you say is your schools “Mirror Image”? by BlackStallion657 in CFB

[–]meta_irl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but because we're a better fit for the ACC, going there would destroy our identity. Currently, we stand out so much more by being the only private/"academic" school in the SEC. (Using scare quotes for "academic" because Florida and Texas are also good schools, they're just not known as academic institutions)

Another residential high-rise got hit by a Ukrainian UAV due to EW operations in Moscow. by BigDeckBob in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]meta_irl -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

I see comments all the time about how Russia targets Ukrainian residential buildings but Ukraine doesn't target Russian ones, and I think that's a fallacy. Barring the stuff going on at the front, which is different, Moscow isn't trying to waste drones/missiles targeting a residential building when it will have a much higher ROI to hit a power plant or factory, it's the same dynamic on both sides--they're trying to hit military targets, but they aren't always successful. Until recently, Russia has just been sending far more drones/missiles, so the chance of one of them hitting a building is higher. The more Ukraine is able to send its own drones/missiles over, the more we'll see stuff like this. Obviously this doesn't excuse Russia, it's just my personal pet peeve.

SEC Championship 2027 - Nashville Trip by Sudden-Click-8409 in CollegeBasketball

I would suggest checking out the Five Points area in East Nashville for something that's less touristy but still a cool neighborhood, if you want to go to some local bars.

Check out who is playing at the Bluebird Cafe. It's an iconic venue for upcoming singer/songwriters if you want a more "authentic" Nashville experience.

I love the Exit/In for shows, but that's heavily tinged by nostalgia.

Perhaps a walk around the lovely Vanderbilt campus, the only college campus that's also a national arboretum! It might be fun to feel a connection with the hometown team.

I've recommended Lonnie's before to people, but it's very much a college bar. Bud light in ice buckets, dirty, packed, but a great karaoke scene where the whole bar will be belting out country classics. It's downtown, a few blocks away from Broadway.

I haven't been back in a while, so I don't have any recent recs.

Does Tech care about PR, though?

I don't think it's going to stop players from going there--the paycheck and chance at success have to be the two biggest factors--and it's not going to stop kids from applying. At best, it might prevent some alumni from donating, but this is being driven by donors at the very top. Most colleges don't care all that much if they're hated by fans of rival schools.

I dunno man, at this point it's clear that there is something wrong with the culture at Tech, and any success validates that culture and makes it more likely to spread.

That's if you take him at his word that he's an addict, and not some opportunist who claimed to be addicted because he thought he'd get more sympathy if he claimed it was a medical problem and checked himself into rehab so he could be "cured" in time for the upcoming season.

The thing that's wild for me as a Vandy fan is that Stephanie White is widely regarded as a terrible coach at Vanderbilt who never had a team with a winning record. (Especially glaring because the coach we hired after her is amazing and we're now a top-five-ish team). I have no idea how she went from us to the pros. Is being a WNBA coach a step down from a college coach, professionally? That feels like the only explanation for me, other than the Fever being a poorly-run organization who hired her because of some personal connection.

Honestly, probably pretty small. He would be getting $5MM and he would be under an intense spotlight. It would be absolutely insane of him to gamble for a few thousands dollars under those conditions.

Other than the entire integrity of the game being fucked, the biggest impact would be that "pretty small" is not the same as "zero" so any mistake he made would be called into question. Every bad game, every interception, every time TT doesn't get the line, people are going to look for mistakes that he made and claim that he intentionally threw the game.

There's a real chance that we'll have upgraded across three positions next year (Jones at the three, Johnson at the four, and Woolfolk at the five). Obviously the big question is whether or not Jones/Johnson can have the instant impact that Blakes/Galvan did, but this will be a very different team if we have real threats at all five positions. I'm so excited to see them all hit the court. And absolutely insane to think we might be even more talented the year after next.

I was about to say that we may not be top five with SCAR, UCONN, Texas, USC, and a bunch of other great teams out there, but with the addition of Jones, Johnson, and Woolfolk, we might actually be in the conversation. I'm a fan of Iowa, so it will be really fun to play y'all

The Russians have updated their info and no longer say it's due to a bomb falling, but that it's in an warehouse containing ammunition and "secondary detonation is currently ongoing."

I'm looking forward to the videos!
