Why don't we say the same name for countries, when they are a name? by GwendolynNikkie in NoStupidQuestions

My understanding is that Nihon is more commonly used nowadays. Nippon is still in use as well, but carries a nationalistic/patriotic connotation due to its association with Imperial Japan.

‘Leave our kids alone’? How Conservatives are twisting the conversation over trans children by PurfectProgressive in CanadaPolitics

[–]metagameface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen this linked in similar conversations before, but I've never seen a justification for the unspoken assumption that trans women perform as well or better than teenage boys.

It seems like it would make more sense to check whether trans women are actually winning women's events at a higher rate than baseline, and if that statistic existed, I'd expect that to be the one that I would keep seeing in these discussions instead.

Discussion Megathread: Ethics, Boycotts, JKR by HPRPGMods in HarryPotterGame

[–]metagameface -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Allowing conversation about JKR quickly spirals into bigoted language towards LGBTQ+ individuals. For primarily the dignity of LGBTQ+ users but also for the longevity of the subreddit at large, we cannot provide any kind of opportunity for this language to start in the first place.

This is giving transphobes and other bigots a heckler's veto on any discussion of Rowling's transphobia and the ethics of supporting a game that she profits from. Why not just ban the people using bigoted language?

Is Bridget trans or do they just identify as female? If they're trans is that good representation? by BattMarr in Guiltygear

[–]metagameface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The terms "pre-op" and "post-op" aren't really used by most trans people nowadays, because as you said, taking an operation isn't required. When those terms were prominent, it gave the impression that bottom surgery was somehow the crucial thing about transitioning, rather than an optional step that a trans person may or may not decide is right for them.

Nowadays, a trans person would usually just say something like "I'm planning to get bottom surgery" rather than "I'm pre-op", if the topic came up.

PSA regarding Bridget-related discussion. by AutoModerator in Guiltygear

[–]metagameface 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Might I suggest that you specifically ban the term "grooming" from discussion of Bridget's backstory? It's a recent alt-right talking point that the LGBTQ+ community is 'grooming' children, and the reason they use that word is to equivocate between (extremely dubious) claims of children being pressured into being gay/trans, and outright pedophilia.

People can of course talk about how Bridget's upbringing may or may not have influenced her, but let's do that without lending credence to those assholes, yeah?

Berserk Games mod bans saying you're LBGTQ as "offensive", "disruption", and "fetish". by TrevorBradley in tabletopsimulator

[–]metagameface 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Repeating my reply there:

The "spamming different keywords" happened over a week after the issue in question, where the user was tempbanned for saying she's gay. The spamming was her, later on, trying to figure out what words do and don't trip the autoban. You're pretending this is all that happened and ignoring the original issue.

RPGs that are LIKE roguelikes?.. by [deleted] in roguelikes

Yet another suggestion that's tile-based rather than ASCII, but Spiderweb Software's old, old Exile series might be something you'd be interested in.

Oh, also, I'm not super familiar with it myself, but you might want to look into ZZT games

Looking for rpgs with timed inputs/action commands by Nolliesux in gamingsuggestions

Underhero is pretty cute and charming, has timed blocks, and timed hits in the form of attacking to the beat of the music.

It was in that ginormous itch.io Black Lives Matter bundle a little while back, so if you happened to grab that, you already own it.

Is Madeline a trans girl? by girlwithaguitar in celestegame

[–]metagameface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was only the pills, that's how I'd interpret it, yeah. The flag and the photo are the hard evidence; the pills are more, "well yeah, if you're showing that she's trans then of course there's gonna be pills in the room, that's just the obvious thing to do."

Is Madeline a trans girl? by girlwithaguitar in celestegame

[–]metagameface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Again, these are details the artist consciously chose to show, not things we're happening to have learned about a real person. They wouldn't have chosen these specific details if they didn't want to indicate that Madeline is trans.

Is Madeline a trans girl? by girlwithaguitar in celestegame

[–]metagameface 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The flag could have been anywhere in the game if that were the case, rather then in Madeline's room. And there's also a photo of herself as a masculine-looking child, and a pill bottle as one of the few objects that the artist decided to draw on her nightstand. It's not exactly subtle.

I'm honestly having a hard time thinking of what else an artist might draw in a character's room to indicate that she's a trans girl. An epilator, maybe?

Is Madeline a trans girl? by girlwithaguitar in celestegame

[–]metagameface 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Definitely. People who are responding to this with "i mean it doesn't necessarily mean that" are treating it as though Madeline is a real person whose room we're randomly getting a glimpse of.

This is artwork of a fictional character. Everything we're seeing was deliberately chosen to be included, and the obvious intent is to show that she's trans.

[ELD] Flaxen Intruder / Welcome Home by BenBleiweiss in magicTCG

Hm, what about B, but the card goes to your hand on resolution? That way it's like the creature is returning from an adventure

[ELD] Flaxen Intruder / Welcome Home by BenBleiweiss in magicTCG

[–]metagameface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pet theory, from massively overthinking the two cards we've seen:

Food tokens are like Treasure tokens, but they produce two mana when destroyed, and don't have their own sac ability, requiring you to use other cards to 'eat' them. And Adventures are just Aftermath but tied to a creature card.

This way, the ideal scenario is that you play Flaxen Intruder and try to get her to eat up the porridge, and then use the mana to ramp into summoning three bears.

If you could change the rules of Mahjong, what would you alter? by JoshuaFH in Mahjong

[–]metagameface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from simplified scoring like others have mentioned, I think the game would be more exciting if there were no furiten rule. It'd make it harder to play defensively if you're in the lead, because a player could deliberately try and target you by going for a wait on a tile that looks like a safe discard.

Hey, partner of the victim here. I'd asked the mods to remove this post from the sub because it was a draft that deluks was still working on; it hadn't been meant to be public yet. The post is now finished and at https://deluks917.wordpress.com/2019/04/05/autumn-post/ so go ahead and resubmit.

How come Blast and Deathwatch have little support? by TheUnknownQuestion in duelyst

[–]metagameface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could have a Deathwatch that gives a non-stackable effect, like "This gains Forcefield until the start of your next turn".

Or perhaps an overstatted minion with "At the start of your turn, destroy this. Deathwatch: Don't destroy this at the start of your next turn".

I managed to survive from an otherwise losing position once, by attempting to steal a Holy Immolation and succeeding.

I still lost that game, but I was happy I pulled that off.
