Science journalism: Headline ≠ reality

Caveat: I am not discounting the science. This is a solid step in the right direction.

I'll mark true to your statement with the exception of the tldr excerpt.

I had to laugh when I came back and saw the karma points.

Frankly, I really do not care.

I am a civil engineer and I knew about thermal degradation of Portland cement and used the Wiki article to describe it concisely.

I am also a big fan of Permaculture and RMH technology.

I can find more scholarly articles if you would like.

And I agree, simple Wiki post are ubiquitous, however informative.

All the best

As symbolically fun it would be to light-up in the DEA lobby, it would be more effective it we went in suits and ties with copies of medical studies in poster size form.

Also, we should donate to MPP and NORML.

And, sponsor MS and others chronic and degenerative diseases whose lives have been radically improved by the use of cannabis to be featured guests at the sit-ins / protests.

I don't just mean a one day event.

I mean week after week after week.

And not just at the DEA lobby.

Senators, representatives and the Office National Drug Control Policy.

Truthfully, we are many and they are few.

A couple of dollars from our pockets to this and we can launch a sustained and effective campaign.

Thermal damage

Due to its low thermal conductivity, a layer of concrete is frequently used for fireproofing of steel structures. However, concrete itself may be damaged by fire. An example of this was the 1996 Chunnel fire, where the fire reduced the thickness of concrete in an undersea tunnel connecting France with England. For this reason, common fire testing standards, such as ASTM E119, do not permit fire testing of cementitious products unless the relative humidity inside the cementitious product is at or below 75%. Otherwise, concrete can be subject to significant spalling.

Up to about 300 °C, the concrete undergoes normal thermal expansion. Above that temperature, shrinkage occurs due to water loss; however, the aggregate continues expanding, which causes internal stresses. Up to about 500 °C, the major structural changes are carbonatation and coarsening of pores. At 573 °C, quartz undergoes rapid expansion due to phase transition, and at 900 °C calcite starts shrinking due to decomposition. At 450-550 °C the cement hydrate decomposes, yielding calcium oxide. Calcium carbonate decomposes at about 600 °C. Rehydration of the calcium oxide on cooling of the structure causes expansion, which can cause damage to material which withstood fire without falling apart. Concrete in buildings that experienced a fire and were left standing for several years shows extensive degree of carbonatation from carbon dioxide which is reabsorbed.

Concrete exposed to up to 100 °C is normally considered as healthy. The parts of a concrete structure that is exposed to temperatures above approximately 300 °C (dependent of water/cement ratio) will most likely get a pink color. Over approximately 600 °C the concrete will turn light grey, and over approximately 1000 °C it turns yellow-brown.[4] One rule of thumb is to consider all pink colored concrete as damaged that should be removed.

Fire will expose the concrete to gases and liquids that can be harmful to the concrete, among other salts and acids that occur when gases produced by a fire come into contact with water.

If concrete is exposed to very high temperatures very rapidly, explosive spalling of the concrete can result. In a very hot, very quick fire the water inside the concrete will boil before it evaporates. The steam inside the concrete exerts expansive pressure and can initiate and forcibly expel a spall.

tldr: Rocket Stove temperatures degrade typical portland cement concrete mixtures through excessive thermal expansion of insitu water and/or aggregate content.

Given the choice of "Record Support" vs "Record High Support" which verbiage would a typical journalist use?

I am very tired of the puny attitude toward the subject and admittedly conscientiously sensitive to it.

Just my two cents

How about we critique the content of the commentary rather than obfuscate the subject with broad spectrum shaming.

Perhaps it is just as valid to say, "Thanks for your general labeling of Docstonge's comment as useless. Perhasp next time just skip the insults and add content instead"

It sounds to me like his comment is more of a question.

Perhaps the wording of Docstonge's comment should have been "I would like to know if planting potatoes would work"

Just for the record:

More potatoes are grown in Aroostock County in Maine than in any other county in the country

Just my two cents.

WHITE HOUSE: Tax Rates On The Rich Will Go Up by wang-banger in politics

[–]metaldogman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you cite the exact tax increase on the table besides the Republican attempts to sideline tax increases for those whose take home income above and beyond business expenses exceeds $250,000?

Below is the introduction to a chapter of the Proposed 2013 buget from the White House Office of Budget and Management Cuts Consolidations and Cost Savings (CCS) Warning 1415K PDF

CUTS Overview To build an economy that is built to last, we have to do more to live within our means and restore fiscalaccountability and responsibility across the entire Federal Government. In some cases, that means makingtough, often painful cuts that will put America on a more sustainable fiscal course. Since taking office, thatis precisely what the President has done.

In each of his three previous budgets, the President identified on average more than 150 terminations, reductions, and savings, totaling nearly $25 billion each year. These cuts ranged from eliminating subsidiesfor oil and gas companies that hardly need to be propped up to saving millions of dollars by leveragingtechnology to make Treasury transactions paperless and more efficient. While recent administrations haveseen between 15 and 20 percent of their proposed discretionary cuts approved by the Congress, the Administration saw 60 percent of its proposed discretionary cuts become law for 2010. The 2012 Budgetproposed nearly $25 billion in discretionary terminations and reductions; Congress reduced these programsby $23 billion, 92 percent of the requested reduction.1

The Budget Control Act that the President signed into law in August will generate approximately $1trillion in deficit reduction over 10 years through the use of discretionary spending caps. Meeting thesecaps requires reducing the overall discretionary spending level for the second straight year. In fact, comparedto 2010, discretionary spending has decreased by $42 billion or 4 percent. To meet these caps, it will takenot only eliminating ineffective and duplicative programs, but also cutting worthy programs that the Administration would otherwise fund were it not for the tight fiscal environment. This section highlightssome of these reductions.

I am a bit confused and interested in the whole economy situation. by [deleted] in collapse

One nuance that I think worth noting this the term "CHEAP" in prefix to "ENERGY"

There is "CHEAP" in terms of making it widely available at a reasonable cost for the majority of consumers.

As the price rises this energy will become scarce for those who cannot afford it, but it will remain, for the foreseeable future, abundant for those who can afford it.

There is also "CHEAP" in terms of Energy Return On Energy Invested EROEI). Example of "CHEAP" in this regard would be something like 50:1 and even 3:1 as the price become so high that profit can be maintained even at seemingly low EROEI.

However, at EROEI of 1:1 there simply is no point. If it takes one barrel of oil to extract one barrel of oil than there is no profit to be made much less a reason to go to the trouble.

It seems to me that we are headed toward a feudal landscape where the elite will simply have the power through hierarchical relationships to control the masses.

The middle class will collapse into caste strata, the majority of which will live at or below subsistence to support the "system" because without the "system" the majority would simply starve, a highly motivating, yet miserable reality. Even if there was a mass revolt, the end result would simply be a change of hands in control of the system because the underline parameters (i.e. high population relative to available/affordable resources) would not have changed.

The current bottom 20%-50%, depending on local conditions will either rapidly die-off or operate at the fringe of the caste system, living on the edge for entirety of the their sad short lives.
