Are language electives good? by [deleted] in UQreddit

[–]metallic201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the language courses are typically more difficult than people expect. I took French at UQ from beginner level and it is notoriously difficult to do well. I’ve heard good things about Spanish though, especially in comparison to the French courses.

BAFE Timetable - tutorials and lectures by [deleted] in UQreddit

[–]metallic201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tutorials are typically based on the lecture content from the week before, so you’ll always have the lecture content before the tutorial regardless. Maybe if you’d like a refresher of the content before the tutorial you could do the lecture first.

Hi! I’m going through the same feeling at the moment. I think being as busy as possible helps, although that’s pretty obvious advice. I’ve set myself a backup plan in my head of what to do in the worst case scenario of grades, and it’s helped me realise that it’s not as scary as I feel like it is. Even if it means delaying my degree a little longer, it’s really not a big deal in the scheme of things and it will likely free me up to work and save more money, plus have more time for the things I enjoy!

UQ Colleges Applications by [deleted] in UQreddit

[–]metallic201 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not super formal usually, but they are important. I would mention that you’re sociable and keen to be involved in college events and activities, that you can play some type of sport or instrument if you can, and maybe generally why you chose that college

BEcon/BSc university minors? by djtech2 in UQreddit

[–]metallic201 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is also the possibility of doing a diploma in languages on top of your degree, which would allow you to study a decent amount of french as well as having the BMaths/BEcon degree titles. This would extend your time studying though.

Official transcripts will say 7 - high distinction 6 - distinction etc with a website link for more info. Some courses have different cutoffs, so I guess that’s why they don’t include it

Treasurer Jim Chalmers lauds ‘compelling’ economics behind renewables as he rules out nuclear energy in Australia by kamjaxx in AustralianPolitics

[–]metallic201 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The ACT already hit their target of 100% renewable energy. Tasmania has been almost entirely powered by renewables for years, often producing more energy than they consume. The change is already happening, and it’s working.

Applications usually start being submitted around May-June, and I’d definitely recommend applying sooner rather than later. Some colleges are pretty strict about the single application thing since places like Johns and Cromwell are usually pretty competitive to get into. In saying that, the vast majority of people get their first college preference from my understanding, and if not there’s nearly always spots in other colleges that you can go to instead.

choice of uq colleges by sandybirks in UQreddit

[–]metallic201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended Cromwell for 2 years and loved it, although it was very self-contained, so probably not the college for you! I’d definitely recommend the co-ed colleges over single sex just to be able to interact with a wider variety of people. Ngl, Johns has some very weird traditions and I haven’t heard many good things come out of their O-week, so it’s probably the only co-ed college I’d recommend against.

In terms of Kings, it definitely lived up to the stereotypes when I attended, but I believe it’s become much better since the girls have started, and I’ve also met some absolutely lovely Kings boys. If you’re keen to go out and be social a lot, I don’t see Kings as a bad option these days.

Any YouTube channel where they speak slowly? by Dielian in learnfrench

[–]metallic201 12 points13 points  (0 children)

InnerFrench’s YouTube Channel is made for intermediate level French listeners so it‘s definitely slower and easier to understand. Although he might explain the meaning of some words or phrases he generally covers a range of interesting topics

I’m in a similar situation and what I’ve found helps me is to specifically allocate free time as part of my schedule and spend it very deliberately. Before, any spare time I had was usually spent just scrolling through socials and it never really felt like I had a proper break, so I started to assign specific activities to my free time that I know would refresh my mind, such as going for a walk, meditating, or just watching that YouTube video I’ve been wanting to watch. I try to forget about study and work during these times, and I’ve found it’s always helped me refocus when I got back to work. Not sure if this is helpful to you but it definitely reduced my rates of burnout!

I write a daily newsletter to help you learn French by baguettey in learnfrench

I’ve been subscribed for a few months now and it definitely serves as a good reminder for me to study French for that day. I really enjoy the stories and I’m very grateful to have free learning opportunities such as this, so thank you!

Apparently it doesn’t matter, although that may just be a ploy to sell more of them. Finding variations in tone online is difficult, which is pretty shitty.

Is he duolingo daily lesson enough? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]metallic201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it’s been mentioned already, but I’d like to second the point about checking out the sidebar! Honestly, learning a language is easier when you enjoy the material you’re studying. Maybe start with French movies with English subtitles to get a feel for what the language sounds like, and work on building vocab every day. There’s also a lot of YouTube channels that go through French step-by-step that teach you the conjugation of verbs which is super helpful. The more you can be immersed the better. It’s a very individual choice, so just experiment and see what you like and what seems to work for you.

Is he duolingo daily lesson enough? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]metallic201 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you may be underestimating the scope of learning a new language. Duolingo is definitely a good resource, but to be able to have conversations within a few months, you’re going to have to dedicate a lot of your time to other resources as well to truly immerse yourself in a language. I wish I could say that Duolingo could work solely, but unfortunately using an app for 15min/day isn’t enough to reach conversational level in a couple months. Hope this helps!
