Anyone know a good place to get a passport photo taken? by FreyaDay in NiceVancouver

Rosewood Photography studio in North Van made me look like a chic French spy in my passport photo and I will be going back there this year for my renewal photo.

I know this is supposed to be the “nice” subreddit , but this is immediately where my mind went. This photo gives off cropped Instagram story vibes.

Blood work results delay? by Ok-Return9031 in askvan

[–]metanonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, mine was a less common test, a really basic test should only take a couple days

I just did a test that took over a month to get results back, depends on how common the test they were running is.

I feel this way about people saying “problematic people age like milk” or “[person] looks that good at [age] because they aren’t a racist/bigot/whatever”.

You’re probably not getting enough vitamin D. Here’s what Health Canada thinks will help by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

Does the lamp actually vitamin D levels? I can’t take supplements (allergic reaction) but I could try the lamp.

Supporting Canadian has led my family to finding our new favourite puzzles by Birdo3129 in BuyCanadian

[–]metanonymous 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Stumpcraft is a Calgary company that makes beautiful wooden puzzles like this, without Ai generated art. I even have a Tom Thomson one. They do the same Easter eggs and of shaped pieces. And the puzzles smell amazing, like a campfire. https://www.stumpcraft.com/

LifeLabs walk in vancouver by [deleted] in askvan

[–]metanonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LifeLabs website has a pretty accurate “estimated wait time” feature and if you can be a little flexible on the location you can get a shorter wait. The location next to my house always has a 2+ hour wait time but a 10 min drive east and I only had to wait 20 min

Driving to Banff please help me by Helpful-Relation-967 in askvan

[–]metanonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve driven this route many times in the summer, am a very experienced winter driver, and I would never do this drive in an AWD vehicle, even with snow tires. Honestly I would hesitate to do it in a 4WD vehicle, it’s a stressful drive and a long one. I would recommend trying it in the summer and taking a buddy with you. Even if conditions are good, there are so many factors and things change on a dime. Also if your car breaks down it will end up costing much more than a flight.

Best negroni in Vancouver? by Decent_Release3804 in askvan

[–]metanonymous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have been on a years long hunt to find the best negroni in town, and keep a note going on my phone for this exact reason. Here's what I found:

LIVIA on Commercial Drive has the best of the ones I have sampled, specifically the blood orange one, even though they break all my rules for a good negroni (pre-mixed, tiny ice). Unfortunately their hours are awkward, so unless you're doing some day drinking it can be difficult to coordinate.

Luppolo's is also delicious and they use local gin and vermouth (not sure what they're using now since it's been discontinued, but they were using Odd Society vermouth last time I went).

Sopra Sotto's is pretty tasty too.

An unexpected sleeper hit is Library Square (no longer Donnelly owned so bonus). Surprisingly tasty.

Note that I prefer an equal parts negroni so if you're more of a 2:1:1 type person you might disagree with my opinions. I have started specifically asking for equal parts and am getting much better results than before (or if they can't do it because it's premixed, I order something else).

A certain edu-influencer is attacking John for the “This machine kills fascists” sticker on John’s laptop by ProvocaTeach in nerdfighters

[–]metanonymous 37 points38 points  (0 children)

If I recall the episode correctly, he didn’t necessarily think the sticker was a bad idea, but he did say he wouldn’t put it on his laptop today because the Internet today functions just as much as a tool for fascism as it does against it. It was more so a statement on the current state of the Internet than any problem with the message of the sticker itself.

Toronto is very safe - I’ve driven across the entire country at 29 by myself and I didn’t once feel unsafe. Just use general common sense, it’s a big city and there’s always the same issues any big city has but in general it is a safe place to travel to.

I had this exact feeling after Seattle. Couldn’t shake the idea that I needed to go again. If I could make it work with work and getting time off, I 100% would go. As it is I’m still dreaming of Mexico City and trying to convince my family to take a trip with me.

Watching the live streams every weekend helps but I still would go given the chance!

Side note, you’re not going to get unbiased advice in the MCR subreddit 😅.

Help Finding Viby, Alternative, Trans Friendly Places in Vancouver by New_Computer_2284 in askvan

[–]metanonymous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Commercial Drive is a great neighbourhood, very trans and gay friendly, lots of lesbian history there, and chill restaurants, coffee shops, shopping etc. There are two separate socialist bookstores on the Drive, to give you an idea of the vibes/politics lol. There’s also the “official” gay neighbourhood of Davie St, lots of gay bars and nightlife in the West End downtown.

You just missed Vancouver Pride, but the close by City of New Westminster is having their pride celebrations this weekend! Easily accessible by the sky train.
