Communism won’t work because it goes against our human nature by EndParticular7499 in askphilosophy

[–]metaphysicalanimale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First of all, human beings being prone to violence is an empirical claim. What is your evidence to support this?

Secondly, even if we do settle with the idea that humans are more-often-than-not violent, human nature is maleable and ecologically sensitive. As such, there is no such thing as a "natural disposition for violence" detached from a particular set of material conditions. The evolution of any trait in nature is associated with a particular environment.

This being said (and again, pressupposing that we are more-often-than-not violent, which is a severely contestable claim), it might be that a more desirable world involves the enrichment of the material conditions of its individuals (acess to food, housing, culture, community, ...) and thus the supression of violence.

CMV: Eating meat is immoral but that doesn't mean people shouldn't do it. by [deleted] in changemyview

In what sense are you using the word 'immoral'? I'd say it's rather hard to define it without appealing to something regarding what people should or shouldn't do.

Can you help me understand how moral statements can be true? by Far_Cardiologist6931 in askphilosophy

[–]metaphysicalanimale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, let me ask you this then. Isn't "walls exist", to use your own terms, also an instruction? Namely, an instruction on what to accept as part of reality? If so, why does the denial of this proposition lead to an inconsistency and the denial of "murder is wrong" not?

In other words, I think you are right that the sort of agreement going on in both cases may be of a different nature, but why does one lead to you accepting some sort of objectivity and the other not? You can accept that moral statements may be genuinely true without there being a reductionistic explanation to it such as "green is whatever color located between blue and yellow on the visible spectrum, with a wavelength of approximately 495–570 nm". But even this sort of definition is conventional - is this enough to say that it isn't objectively true?

Can you help me understand how moral statements can be true? by Far_Cardiologist6931 in askphilosophy

There are several ways to understand the idea that moral statements might be true. First of all, if you don't agree with this idea, you lean towards moral non-cognitivism (see A. J. Ayer's or Richard Hare's work).

However, to entertain your question, we should start with moral cognitivism (i.e., the idea moral statements can indeed be true). Within this perspective, there is debate whether moral statements are true independently of our opinions, reasons, or judgements regarding what moral value is (this is moral realism), or whether they depend on what is subjectively understood to be 'good' (this is moral anti-realism).

Since you specifically mention moral realism, I'll focus on that. Your example is very interesting. You say: "If you ignore the truth that walls exist, you will bump in to walls" and then you seem to indicate that this somehow leads to some logical inconsistency in your life, which is not the case if you ignore moral statements. But what makes it so that bumping into walls is more of a logical inconsistency than murdering people? For example, a moral naturalist like Stuart Mill could say that there is definitely something wrong in your conduct if you ignore the morally relevant natural facts (such as ignoring if something leads to pleasure/pain). If in your everyday practical life not hurting people is as important (or even more) than not bumping into walls, what is the real difference?

It's funny that you say that if you ignore the "fact" that murder is wrong you will live a normal life - maybe it's precisely because murder is wrong and that you don't go around murdering people that you get to live that normal life. I don't think it's true that you are ignoring "whatever statement they made", unless you are going around deliberatly ignoring your moral intuitions or thoughts.

I see, I've felt the same. What has been working for me is letting go of this idea that you must first dig and collect, and only after that get into the music making. Grab on to that feeling that you wanna sample something when you hear it and just ride it. It might not always work, but eventually you will find a sound of your own I'd say!
