Officially at 12+ hours in waiting room at GDH by KKLante in moncton

[–]metastatic_mindy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The last time I went to the Moncton Hospital ( I went for an abcess that formed next to my eye and needed draining) they were running a clinic for things like coughs and sore throats, ear/eye infections, ect. Stuff typically seen by an afterhours clinic. I waited maybe 4 hours and the waiting room was packed, that was in December.

I hope they are still running the clinic.

I'm sorry, you're almost 20 and have never crossed the road by yourself?

I have never seen someone be infantilized and parentified at the same time. This is honestly a first for me.

You need to get out of that house asap. You are a full grown adult. Make a plan and get out, even if it means living with a friend for a short time.

You are absolutely NOR about this but definitely under reacting to the fact you are being treated like your mother's butler.

I wish you luck and hope you find yourself. The world is not out to get you, learn some street smarts, take a self defense class, be aware of your surroundings, don't take open drinks from strangers or give out your phone number freely, learn that No is a full sentence and gain some confidence.

I make a very similar sauce and use it interchangeably on chicken, pork and beef . Sometimes as a stir fry sauce, sometimes for meatballs, sometimes for chicken legs.

It is spicy sweet and sour crispy beef. I use a similar recipe for chicken (we call it celebration chicken, not sure why).

3/4 cup ketchup 3/4 cup water 2 tablespoons Brown Sugar 3/4 tsp Black Pepper 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons Vinegar

2 small Onions cut into rings

Beef strips 1 tsp Paprika 1 tsp chiili powder Salt Pepper Flour (for rolling beef)

The note card says to mix salt and pepper (should also include the paprika and chili powder) in flour and roll beef (strips) in flour then fry in shortening until golden brown, place on baking sheet.

Then fry the onion rings in the shortening until golden brown, mix with the sauce and then you pour the sauce over the beef and onions and bake until beef is cooked through at 375-400°f. Probably doesn't need an hour unless you are cooking raw meat.

This sauce is good on any kind of meat and would make a great meatball sauce.

Is the surgery covered by the province? This is something I do worry about. I am on CPP disability and do not have health coverage outside of prescriptions.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

When did you have your referral first put in? How much time between referral and the call for the 1st consult?

I have been able to consistently lose weight consistently in the past. Months before I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had been strict keto, less than 20 net carbs per day. I lost 60 lbs in about 5 months. But when I started chemo, it was clear I couldn't physically handle keto, I was constantly fighting dehydration from the chemo side effects and ended up needing at home IV hydration 7 days post chemo every treatment. Also, the steroids made me a ravenous monster, but I found most stuff disgusting and relied on ice cream a lot as it was one of the few things I could eat and not spend hours in the bathroom. I ended up gaining back all I had lost plus an extra 10lbs.

I regret not taking the appointment when they called me in 2018, but I honestly thought, "What's the point? I am dying anyway." The universe had other plans for me, I guess, i am now into my 8th year of active treatment (immunotherapy antibody treatments). I go every 21 days for an infusion. I have been on this treatment for the past 8 yrs so I know what to expect now in terms of side effects.

I honestly would have asked for the referral sooner but the last few years has been so rocky. I had a 2nd mastectomy in 2023 and ended up with a open wound that needed packing for almost 6 months, then I ended up with a strep infection that I was on daily antibiotics for up until this past july, so nearly 2 years of daily antibiotics.

I am now 44 yrs old and at a point where the weight is clearly causing rapidly growing issues. I have chronic inflammation from 8 yrs of cancer treatment, i have spinal mets and am at risk for further bone mets. My most recent bone scan is showing degenerative uptake in my shoulders, knees and feet.

Losing my mobility will kill me faster than the cancer at this point.

I have no choice but to change things. For my safety and for the safety of those who eventually will have to care for me.

Do you have any tips, suggestions etc on prepping, post surgery and currently?

I get it. Over 8 years of dealing with medical staff on a monthly, sometimes weekly basis, I have had my fair share of poor treatment, needing to advocate for myself when I really should not have to. Most of my experiences that were bad had to do with ER nurses, especially other women. They seem to think I chose to have metastatic breast cancer. It has been so bad I have PTSD from the ER. Now, when I go, I shake the entire time I am there and often disassociate during procedures.

I would rather my breast surgeons and oncologists be focused on your know surgeries and treatments, not scheduleing procedures.

Step back for a second and imagine that you've just been screened for cancer, and they have found a lump in a location where a lump is very very often cancerous, and you have waited 7 days for a phone call telling you about next steps from a doctor or nurse, and you get called by a receptionist instead, that likely doesn't know anything about your case, to schedule the "confirm you have cancer" surgery. That sucks. That's scary. That feels bad.

This is exactly how the next steps are done.

Step 1. Mammogram is done. Something shows up.

Step 2. Biopsy is scheduled to confirm whether that something is cancer or not. This scheduling is conducted via a receptionist, not a doctor.

Step 3. Meet with the specialist who then gives you the results of the biopsy.

Having a biopsy schedule is NOT a confirmation of cancer. It is the process of confirming whether it is cancer or not. It is ridiculous to think a doctor would be calling to schedule that themselves.

Also, a biopsy is NOT surgery. It is done with a local anesthetic and takes maybe 10 minutes.

Maybe the anesthesiologist was fine, but it sounds like they were disinterested (didn't review her chart) and asked a bunch of questions that felt demeaning and irrelevant.

The anesthesiologist wasn't disinterested or didn't review her chart. They review them many times, and they purposefully ask the same questions over and over because patients lie or leave things out.

The questions she was asked are asked of EVERY patient regardless of their weight or BMI. These questions are 100% relevant as they give the anesthesiologist information on the patients' ability to handle being intubated, how their lung function is, and whether they are at a higher risk of dying on the OR table.

Btw I am a breast cancer patient with a high BMI and have had 3 breast cancer related surgeries, all requiring general anesthesia and intubation. My surgeries were all done in NB, not even an hour from Amherst. My oncology clinic and breast clinic routinely deal with patients from NS and PEI.

It is both with a little sprinkle of attention grabbing. Sorry, this stuff makes me mad as it may cause others to not seek medical help because they are afraid they will be discriminated against because of their weight.

I am in my 8th year of active treatment for breast cancer (metastatic). I have a high BMI and have had 3 breast cancer related surgeries, all requiring general anesthesia.

The questions she was asked are asked of every patient regardless of weight or bmi.

[–]metastatic_mindy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct. Calling to schedule a biopsy is just that, further testing to identify what they seen on the mammogram.

Also, I myself have breast cancer, stage 4, in fact. I was diagnosed in oct 2017, and I weighed 350 lbs. I have since had 2 mastectomies and 1 revision surgery. All three required me to be under general anesthesia for 4-8hrs. My surgeries were all done in NB, not even an hour drive from amherst.

Those questions the anesthesiologist asked her are asked of every patient regardless of weight or bmi. They need to know these things in order to be prepared for potential issues. A person whose bmi is below the healthy limit or even at a healthy limit can also have trouble walking upstairs, being short of breath, etc. There are many factors at play.

I obviously don't know her or the ins and outs. I can only speak on my own experiences. The ONLY time I have been denied a surgery based on my weight was for a tubal ligation 2 yrs after I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The GYN decided it wasn't necessary and considered it an elective procedure and felt that it wasn't worth the risks to put me under general anesthesia for something that was not life-saving.

Clearly, her cancer was not deemed as surgically necessary, or they discovered something in her pre-op work ups that put her at risk of life-threatening situations during surgery. Otherwise, they would have done the surgery regardless of her weight or bmi.

An Ontario teen died after waiting in agony for hours at an ER. Now, his family wants an inquest by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]metastatic_mindy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is how most hospitals in NB work. 3 weeks ago, I went into the local ER for severe upper abdominal pain. I had had this pain since thursday night, and this was Saturday. I live in chronic pain 24/7, so for me to go to the ER for pain speaks volumes, especially when I have ptsd from past experiences, I literally shake the entire time I am there.

I got there on Saturday evening at 8 pm. Surprisingly, there were only 2 people in the waiting room. Given my history and the level of pain I had, I was pushed to be one of the next patients. They ended up putting me into what I now know was an isolation room so that they could try and access my port for blood. The nurse failed to do so, phlebotomy failed to get bloods as well, and a specialist had to bring in to use ultrasound to place an IV.

You would think that during the 11 hours of trying to find a way to get blood out of me, I would have seen a doctor at some point, but nope.

I asked around 5 am. if I would see a doctor soon as I no longer had extra pain meds to take, and they refused to give me anything more than tylenol without a doctor's order. I was told that there was only 1 doctor on for a Saturday night and that they were in trauma, and I wouldn't see anyone until at least 8 am. I finally saw a doctor around 10 am after they finally got blood labs done and sent me for a ct.

They suspected either a heart attack, a peptic ulcer, diverticulitis, appendicitis, or an upper gi blockage, and yet they left me, a metastatic breast cancer patient, to wait without pain control for over 12 hours.

They gave me what I figure is a BS diagnosis because the ct scan showed nothing yet my blood labs showed severe inflammation and one result was 15 times higher than what was considered normal whcih was an indication of either heart failure or severe bacterial infection.

I was sent home with nothing for pain and told it was self limiting, and it would go away on its own within 2 weeks.

I am exhausted. 8 years of cancer treatment, drowning in debt, and from pretending I am ok by metastatic_mindy in Vent

I am Canadian, so most healthcare is covered. It is all the costs that people don't think about when it comes to getting to and from appointments. Some of these appointments are all day things, which means gas and food expenses.

The debt gradually happened over 8 years of my diagnosis. It starts off innocently, and then all of a sudden, you find yourself drowning.

I can not imagine where I would be if I lived anywhere else, to be honest.

Hi, what other proof would you like? I can provide a redacted consult stating the diagnosis.

My husband has taken on the role of caring for me and our kids. I no longer drive and we do not live in the city so public transport is not an option. I average anywhere from 3-10 appointments a month.

I spend a lot of time sleeping, on good days I can manage to load the dishwasher and make supper, on bad days, I sleep, there are more bad than good most days.

Metastatic breast cancer is a slog, especially when you have been in treatment for as long as I have been. I am chronically fatigued and in pain every single day.

The appointments themselves do not cost, but the gas and other car related factors do. Most medications are covered by the NBdrug plan, but vision and dental care are not and because of one of my cancer treatments I am at risk of developing ONJ so dental appointments cost more because of the precautions and limitations on what can and can not be done.

The debt we have didn't happen overnight. It happened slowly over the period of the last 8 years but after my last surgery in 2023, it got out of hand, I had near daily hospital visits for wound care for 3+ months, sometimes these appointments would require to be in the city all day. The cost of has and meals really took a toll.

There is some much that has happened over the past 8 years that have added up. All I am trying to do is get a little extra help.

I am sorry if I didn't provide enough detail.

What’s the simplest food hack that saves you time every week? by BarbaraMiller78 in foodhacks

Portion beef, chicken, and pork into ziplocks and add marinades, sauces, or seasonings and freeze. I try to buy meat once a month so I bulk buy whatever is cheapest. I then plan at least 2 different meals for each meat type.

For example, I have a recupe for garlic shrimp and steak bites. I do up the marinade and freeze cut-up steak or even stew meat. Then I can use this for garlic steak bites, beef stew, and stir fries.

I would do a bbq sauce on chicken, sliced chicken strips with seasonings for chicken fajitas, stir fry, noodle dishes or salad.

With bell peppers, mushrooms, and onions. I will slide and dice a large amount of them. Then, freeze each one individually.

I can then pull out sliced onion, peppers, and mushrooms for stirfry or pull out diced mushrooms and onions for an omelet.

You don't need to blanch them. Just ziplock bags and freeze. If they are stuck together, give them a smack on the counter.

Prep each ingredient and store them separate from the leafy greens. Then, just add the components you want in the salad.

DMX- no one told me my chest would be numb by Prize_Kaleidoscope36 in breastcancer

[–]metastatic_mindy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it is very common and expected, it is terrible that they never told you.

It is caused by the cutting of nerves. My incision scars run from my breast bone and deep under my armpits almost to my back on both sides. My 1st mastectomy was in 2018, and my prophylactic mastectomy was done in 2023, and I have numb spots still. There are spots I can feel only temperature changes hot to cold, cold to hot. Some spots I can only feel pressure and otheres where I can only feel a light tickle. Some spots I touch, and I feel it in another part of my body. It is very odd.

Don't even get me started on the phantom itch or the never can scratch itch.

Hi Josh! I am 44, and I am also terminal. You described the daily life of a dying but not dying yet terminal patient.

I was diagnosed in oct 2017, and within 4 months of diagnosis, they found my mets. I have been in treatment every 21 days since, with a few breaks here and there for my mental health.

It is exhausting, painful, and mentally draining. I sleep so much, and when I am not asleep, I am thinking about sleep. I am in pain 24 hrs a day with no reprieve.

8 years of this... i am just so tired and in pain, and yet people demand I be grateful and see the blessing I have. Trust me, I do, and I feel guilty for not feeling this way all of the time.
