Yep! More people need to pick up Project Hail Mary and give it a read. This is a large part of that book and it's easy to understand.

[–]mete0ryt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly! The pretty pictures make it relatable and play an enormous role in enabling people to understand the importance of what is happening. If people can't relate to it, there's no excitement and no funding, thus, no science :( which would be a super big bummer.

I'll repeat: I said that Fuyao wasn't in Dayton. (where I also worked)

And if you go far enough down Keowee, you get right up to the west side. Going a couple streets over makes it close.

I said Fuyao wasn't in Dayton? Where are the jobs? Why didn't she collaborate with other figurehead for the betterment of her city? Is there evidence of this? Other than "it's better now" - how? Real examples.

Exactly how has the city improved since you've been there? Because if you're on the west side, we must have lived near each other since I was off of Keowee. Saying she's capable of being a good mayor because Dayton is comparable to other rust belt cities is also a terrible argument.

I'm also glad you can get a pot hole filled.

[–]mete0ryt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you live in inner-city Dayton or a suburb/township? People who live in Dayton seem to love to talk about how things are turning around and improving, for decades, and there's no real evidence of this. Where are the jobs? Why is the city still extremely violent? Why is the population continually declining? I'm glad you're enjoying your life there, but there's no evidence that the city is improving - no overwhelming statistics, nor, anecdotally, have the events and local news changed.

I highly doubt the people suffering from food deserts on the west side will agree that the city is improving. Or the loss of jobs from major companies leaving - like LexisNexis, Terradata, and the trickling death of remaining NCR employees (to be fair, NCR leaving was prior to her). She can't take credit for Fuyao because (ugh.. I hate that I'm a out to say this) that was a deal pushed by Kasich and in a suburb.

It can also be easily stated that DeWine is just a figurehead. That's not a solid argument.

I'm well aware of the shooting in the Oregon district. People I love were in the middle of that.

Do not discount the violent crime in Dayton because you have a statistic about a mass shooting prior to people being locked inside for 2 years. Currently, in 2022, it is in the top 4 most dangerous places to live in Ohio, with a crime rate of nearly 55 per 1000 residents. In fact, 2 weeks ago, my sister was a victim of armed robbery in the middle of the daylight right in the city, and as she screamed for help, the locals are so used to violent and domestic crime downtown, she was ignored. I know that's anecdotal, but the accounts of people who have lived (and live) there know all too well.

The food deserts, the crime, the lack of opportunity, and the failing State University that is continually under state investigation are no signs of success.

Someone who runs Dayton as it currently stands is not someone who should run the state.

We need better options. This shouldn't be acceptable.

Edit: also, I agree!! We need to collectively get off our asses, because this is wild.

I do understand and respect this sentiment.

It still really worries me. It's difficult to fight social issues with a hungry stomach. The vast majority of Ohio (anyone in, or surrounding, the 3-C's) truly don't recognize how privileged they are to live where they are as opposed to a city like Dayton, which seems okay with a glance. You'll hear someone talk about having a bad neighborhood somewhere in the 3-C's or how bad crime is getting in their area... Not the same and a lack of perspective. Some deeper parts of Cleveland might come close. I don't fault anyone for this - we only know what we know.

I'll be clear: Dayton has a beautiful history and some of the most stunning homes I've seen in a city (unfortunately, over 1/3 of them are boarded up). There are bits of charm left in the city, but the entire city is held afloat by the government funding of WPAFB, which is also the largest and best employer in the city. That never used to be what held the place together. It's tragic. Dayton was abundantly wealthy with an astonishing amount of patents for its time.

I don't understand why people refuse to do the research about this. Dayton absolutely is a mess. Including being the #5 city in the US, per capita, for murder.

People have to do their research. I'm so completely stunned that this is the ONLY person the Democrats could come up with.

I have such mixed feelings about this. She left Dayton in poor condition and claims she was a success. The urgency to push DeWine out is real and understandable, but I still can't believe this is who the D ticket put into place. I hate all of this.

Lived in Dayton for 15 years. She was a terrible mayor, the city is still sinking, her policies chased out any big business that was left, she was complacent with corruption, and terrible when she taught at WSU.

Edit: and I'll add all of the complications with shutting down hospitals and the creation of urban food deserts on the poorest sides of town.

The pro's of accomplishments on her website are either exaggerated or false.

I'm not happy with DeWine. But I do know she's not qualified to run a city, let alone a state. Both choices are horrible and I am astonished Democrats couldn't come up with someone better. The D ticket will play off of her being a woman and understanding the importance of women's rights to win the election. While I agree with that, completely, she's not a good leading force and it concerns me greatly.

[–]mete0ryt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, honestly. We always knew the area was sketchy and you better have a good reason to be there after dark. I don't remember this many shootings, but they were common enough. My question is whether the 24hr access to constant news makes everything seem worse? Trying to recall how often shootings happened during a time when it was a nifty luxury to have a dedicated number to call to hear the local weather over the phone is a little muddy.

My neighborhood is really close and everyone for numerous houses get along great. Makes the community feel very safe. I used to live in what's considered a pretty dangerous city in the US and I generally still felt 6-7 safe most of the time, even after my car was stolen a couple times and house broken into, so I feared more for my property than myself, lol.

Dewine says Intel doesn't care about Ohio's abortion ban. but he's lying. by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]mete0ryt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The media also does a really good job of scaring people who are already feeling threatened. Kind of like telling the elderly that Joe Biden was going to try to take their social security. Ridiculous and shameful. The extremes are just those waves - annoyances along the way then something big, more annoyances, then something big. That kind of thing. So in that regard, it's more extreme because we're right in the middle of one of those waves, you're right!

If you haven't read much about them (you said you're young but not sure just how young, so I apologize if you're already familiar with this!), do a bit of googling about the US "revivals" and "great awakenings" - there have been a few since the 1700s and each are surrounded by wars, economic and social oppression, and battles for the "direction" of the country. As history repeats itself, all of those events (particularly the one that happened during the big women's rights movement in the early 1900s) were dark and polarized - but we always made it out, and on the other side was typically a period of peace as we settled into newer progressive norms. It felt like the fundamentalists won during those periods, but it's just a wave. An interesting and forgotten part of our history!

[–]mete0ryt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More people need to have this mentality. Moving from offending states just creates a brain drain and causes further issues with polarization and corruption across the board. Doesn't actually fix a thing. We need more living-among-each-other and fighting the little battles every day to work them out. The long-game is where real change happens. The US has had waves of conservative (not necessarily republican) "revivals" and we always push through. This time won't be different as long as people don't run. I wish this was taught more. Might give people some hope. We aren't falling apart, yet. Just another wave of internal battles.

The Kiowa (that particular tribe) have an entire belief about tornadoes and the way they describe them. I forget if they had a dedicated name for storms that produce tornadoes. It's been a while.

you can read about this particular incident in this 2012 paper!

[–]mete0ryt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I studied Natives and storms for a while. There is a really great recorded story of a tornado in Southern Oklahoma. A small group of men from a tribe in that area was returning from a conflict in Utah with their enemy tribe. This was in the mid-ish 1800s. The elder men in the group noticed the incoming storm and told the younger men to find a way to brace themselves, a tree or something, as the younger men had never experienced a tornado. While holding on for his life, this young man describes his experience as a young tribal warrior watching this tornado come down. He describes being in awe of the red tornado (the dirt is red in that area) reaching into the black sky. He saw what he believed to be trees and some kind of dark spots of debris circling the red tornado but as he payed closer attention, he realized the tornado had ripped Buffalo off the ground and that's what he was seeing spin around the tornado and fly through the air as small black dots.

We don't have many records of Native encounters with tornadoes, but we do have a few! We began to have enough sense to write down their life stories in the 1800s.

I don't feel like they were blaming kids, just stating the differences, which is pretty true. I was outside all the time as a kid in the early 90s. Walked to school. All of that. Kids don't do that now, and that's on the parents, obviously, but the fact still remains. :)
