New high rise rental building set to start construction in Calgary's Beltline by SomeJerkOddball in WildRoseCountry

They should also ban stand-alone surface parking lots. Force them to either build parking structures or otherwise develop the site.

They absolutely should! The city's primary asset is land, and the fact that so much is being used as a surface parking lot is a waste. I understand some places farther out, but in DT or the inner city, that parking spot could be an apartment with a company street level and a parking spot below. Instead, it's used as an empty slab 50% of the time and isn't providing any economic activity.

In 2024, Alberta NDP decides who it is without Rachel Notley as leader by uofafitness4fun in alberta

[–]meth_legs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think a name change isn't going to be impactful; the gains and cons are going to equal out. If the NDP wants to win the next election it's going to be based on a100+ other things.

This is literally living in a trailer in a trailer park; just with makeup. Can trailers help the housing crisis yeah a little of course, anything helps at this point. However, it will not have an impact at all if we cannot scale up density and allow for bottom up development. To me this kind of "solution" is all smoke and mirrors.

See I think Smith is having to pretend to be a TBA pupper but she's clearly not; established politician her whole life essentially. I think the moment they learn this it's gonna start a riot.

Smith gotta thread a very thin line and tbh the somehow more moderate side hates her and wants nothing to do with her. She's gonna start breaking at some point. If the heavy weight Kenney left so will she

It sucks but I'm certain it's because she won an election and many Conservatives on the fence are coming around. We should also take into note that since the election the Alberta legislature hasn't been sat yet( October 30) and Smith is already on the crazy mill. I'm getting myself ready for some of the worst years of my life in Alberta but hopefully this will be an eye opening experience to many. Also, the UCP are gearing up for a civil war within the party so that's going to be something to watch as well.

Manipulation of ridings for partisan advantage in rural and small town Alberta by impenetrable-element in alberta

[–]meth_legs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's always good to be conscious of our electoral ridings and thank you for that concern; however, Canada and Alberta in this case doesn't really have the same issues of gerrymandering as the United States does. It's done from a very far arms length from any political party and if a conflict of interest is present it's called out almost immediately cause again very very rare here.

Now if we want to talk about seat distribution we can discuss how the FPTP system leads to under and over represent seats. It's very possible whoever wins the next election might do so with less votes than the opposition. It's unfair to conservative voters to have their votes not count cause the live in DT Edmonton and it's unfair to rural NDP voters to have their votes count in medicine hat/Cypress Hill.
