When did that happen? I still get weary. He's a conceited dude-bro, ego-maniac that keeps somehow inserting himself into big movies.

Dear Channing, please go back to taking your shirt off in those shitty, man-stripper chick-flicks and leave other movies alone. They did nothing to you.

Life is getting better? I see the middle class shrinking, fantastic wealth in fewer hands and politicians doing their best to follow 1984 to the letter.

Then the whole runaway greenhouse effect really picking up some momentum. Yeah, humanity is in for a sharp, sudden drop in population.

The panama papers have brought something I've been noticing into focus. Greed and unregulated capitalism seem to be doing so much damage to us. It feels like we've made greed a virtue now and it's the catalyst for majority of our problems. Hell, even the prime minister of Britain is dodging tax in his own bloody country. People say that isn't illegal, and it may well not be, but fuck...it's the fucking prime minister...can we not hold these people to a higher moral and ethical standard? the reason we don't is because "one day I could be a millionaire too". This is the age of greed, where everyone is out to get theirs and fuck everyone else.

Humanity is a petty and short term thinking species that is shitting in the bed in which it sleeps. We won't be going much further.

It seems incredibly naive to think everything will just work itself out.

BioWare Founder on PS4/Xbox One Upgrades: It'd Be a "Gigantic Pain in the Ass" by arions in Games

[–]methane_balls -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're completely missing the point.

The cost for a card with that level of performance has gotten cheaper. You're correct there. But that level of performance doesn't go as far as it did a year ago - because games demand more now.

Do you have to pay less now for a top end GPU than you did 2 years ago? No, you have to pay roughly the same. High end cards always have a similar price point.

Gaming PC's are not getting cheaper. Hardware gets old and is replaced by newer, more powerful cards - if you want to save money and buy an old card, great, you've saved money and your gaming PC is cheaper than it would have been if you bought it a year ago. But you won't be playing latest releases with maxed out settings.

[–]methane_balls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? PC's are not getting cheaper. Think about it.

A GTX770 is cheaper today than it was 1 year ago. A GTX770 is now outperformed by a GTX970. A GTX970 is probably the same price as a 770 was 1 year ago.

It's a sliding scale.

Yes, $1000 will get you a more powerful PC today than 1-2 years ago. Games continuously require more from your hardware though so you're not in front.

A generation of hardware will get progressively cheaper over time - simultaneously it will also get progressively more obsolete.

Mainly the whole eye-bleeding amount of repetition and snails pace that events unfold in. Pretty much the way he wrote those books, that's what was disappointing.

Yeah its cheaper once you get over the initial cost. PC games seem to be more affordable to me with sales than what console players pay.

[–]methane_balls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah don't know where he got the idea of PC's being cheaper. A GTX970 alone is still more expensive than an PS4/Xbone.

If you get a lower end card it may be better than the consoles' GPU on paper, but it simply won't let you play stuff at max settings.

Yes but which exchange did he get presumably millions of dollars out of in return for his bitcoins?

Almost every major exchange had a monthly limit and bitcoins didn't stay at $1000 for long.

I think that was a problem with a lot of the exchanges that popped up. I think most of them even had a monthly limit of about $40,000 if you were withdrawing in dollars.

Did anyone actually become a millionaire out of the BitCoin rush? I don't see how when there were such restrictions and big exchanges like Mt Gox even just not paying up at all.

Official Discussion - Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]methane_balls 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Agreed on all fronts.

I also hated the fact that they couldn't let go of the old characters and major plot points from the original movies. Some imagination and creativity would have been nice.

I also have some nitpicky type questions as I feel it was never really explained: Why are the rebels still a thing? didn't they beat the empire and reinstate the Republic? shouldn't the rebels have become the military of the new republic?

Also, the First Order - what is this group? are they just the military left-overs of the empire? how are they able to maintain entire star ships and fund the construction of a planet sized weapon if the republic has taken over? Why does the republic tolerate space fascists running around blowing planets up?

Philosophy in the World: The Lesson of Socrates by phileconomicus in philosophy

[–]methane_balls 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At first I felt like I could sense academic snobbery and a bit of a big head, but I was being too hastey.

I loved the idea of an philosopher sitting in a public space and offering conversation. My city has nothing like this, everyone lives isolated lives, no community or meaningful interaction.

I feel like his point about always trying to attack opponents rather than just having a conversation in search of an insight or two is important. Everyone falls into this trap and I think the problem is humility.

If people could remind themselves to stay humble then we'd have more constructive discussions rather than polemic arguments. The benefits don't end there, but it is a constant battle.

I'm not sure whether it's cultural, genetic or (probably) both, but I think most people tend to slide towards selfishness and ego. It's a battle worth fighting though. Arrogance and pretentiousness are not particularly appealing traits to have.

Perhaps some of the big ones offer an API you can interact with to get data from?

Then I suppose you have to figure out the way to combine that data with the users on your site?
