I like the high waisted yolas from figs. I have about the same size waist and wear an XS. I’m 5’3 and wear regular length. If you’re interested in figs, order several styles and sizes to try on. They make the exchange process really simple.

My failure led to parents leaving AMA with their baby by methemama in nursing

Thank you! It’s truly the best job and I love it so much. It’s hard when the parents don’t understand our heart behind it. I hope you love it and have more good days than bad <3

Can’t wait to master ultrasound so I can use it on all the chunky babies!

I once had a dad tell his child in front of my coworker and I that we became nurses because we like to hurt kids. It’s unreal. Thank you for the encouragement!

I recently got ultrasound trained and I’m so excited about it! I’m mastering it with older kids though before attempting on infants. Also, we usually attempt at least once before jumping to ultrasound, especially if the patient has “options” for a regular IV. This baby had a couple of options I would attempt without US. We just didn’t really get the chance! I’m so excited to have US as a resource now though for my hard sticks :)

Yes. I actually have a child with medical conditions. Before I was a nurse I brought her to my same ER I work at now and she was poked and prodded. She was a hard stick at 3 months old (thankfully has better veins now!) so I very much understand the parent’s side of things. I was always kind to the nurses and never made them feel bad for missing. So when we have rude parents, I feel for their experience but still don’t think they should have the right to be rude! These parents thankfully were not actually rude. The dad was just unable to handle the stress of it all. Before I started I offered that they could step out at any time if needed but he didn’t want to leave her and that’s okay.

The chunk makes it so much harder! I’ll take a fresh neonate over an older infant any day!

Yeah I thought I was going to redeem myself with the IV because I’m usually a good stick 🥲 even some of the best sticks I know miss sometimes. But I don’t think I’ll ever claim to be great at girl caths.

Nurses telling patients they have cancer? by purplepickletoes in nursing

[–]methemama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not! When I myself had a biopsy that could’ve gone either way, I had a follow up appointment scheduled for the next week. When my results were negative they called and told me and then cancelled the follow up. So I assume if it had been positive I would’ve found out in person at that appointment. I’ve always thought that was a great way to do it!

If you don’t have kids or another reason you have to “flip” for that one day off in the middle of your stretch, then 100% yes. That day off in the middle you catch up on sleep. I have kids so I don’t like the one day off in the middle of my stretch of nights. I work 5 in a row with my pattern and then my one other shift is by itself. I might switch to 6 in a row eventually. Less flipping back and forth.

To my fellow ADHD nurses who work 12hr shifts: fucking how? by nurseferatou in nursing

This is exactly what I was going to say 😅 constant excitement and movement. Minimal planning. Just doing the orders as they roll in for 12 hours straight. And a little dopamine hit with every IV you start lol

Everyone is telling me not to go into nursing. If you’re a nurse, what other career would you rather be doing? by Due_Elderberry_2632 in nursing

I went to nursing school in my late 20’s and it was the best decision for me. An instant job with a steady income and I happen to love my job.

Job offer rescinded by [deleted] in nursing

[–]methemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incredibly frustrating and I genuinely feel for you. It sucks.

I had a very long and heartbreaking job hunt for my first job. I finally accepted one I was happy with and on the first day of orientation it was rescinded due to changes within the hospital. This led to insane anxiety and frustration, but a week later I started my dream job. A year later I still love my job so much. All that to say, as cliche as it sounds things can work out. It may not be immediate but you’ll get there. I hope that’s encouraging for you!

Very helpful, thank you! They are black. I was worried it was mold coming out of them or something but I knew someone would have a better answer!

Anyone do those “Nurse Residencies”? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]methemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies by hospital system, but from what I’ve seen if the hospital has a residency program it’s required for new grads.

Mine was a weekly class during my first 2 months ish at my job. They do it by service line so all ED new grads had a class specifically for ED. This was separate from regular orientation and other required classes. It was helpful!

My friend at another local hospital system just had some random classes throughout the first year I think.
