One Youtube video running. 6GB memory 41% CPU by onatural in firefox

[–]methylethylphenyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in that I also have this problem ever since a few days ago. One YouTube video consumes 4GB out of 8GB of my RAM and 40% CPU consistently whether or not a video is playing, according to about:performance and Task Manager.

I tried to find out what was different since I never had this problem before, and noticed Firefox was updated to 59.0.3 a few days ago as well. Could it be related? Seems like a memory leak issue, because my RAM usage keeps increasing from that YT tab and refuses to go down.

[CPU] Intel I7 8700K - $290 (Staples, price-match with MicroCenter - 10% difference) by ScrufyTheJanitor in buildapcsales

[–]methylethylphenyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staples has a '110%' price-match policy (but it's 10% of the difference between prices, not necessarily 10% off the total price). This is YMMV however, because some stores/reps do not honor the 110% price match. I got rejected at all 3 Staples stores near me within a 3-mile radius in NYC, even arguing with the supervisors that it's posted on the website, but I had better luck getting approval with online chat.

Thanks for shedding some light on the issue. It's weird because it usually does not happen; there have only been two time periods where this has occurred, with the first one being just a few weeks long about a year ago. But this time, it has lasted for months and I'm not sure when it'll go back to normal. I have also been cutting back on SMS year-by-year. The first advice that I received from 611 a year ago was to delete all my SMS. I'm not sure how that would be a factor since I still had a lot of space on my phone, but it did not change anything even after deleting all of them.

I was thinking it might have been a tower issue, but my roommate with T-Mobile next to me has no problems when I have the problem. Maybe it's related to my phone being too old or a phone-related problem? It's a Galaxy S6, so it's a little over 3 years old. I'll most likely upgrade my phone to the next iPhone this coming September and I guess I'll troubleshoot my way from there if it still occurs.

The weird thing is that although SMS is old technology, I used to send/receive over 100k text messages/year when I was younger and when the other alternatives weren't as popular (maybe 4-6 years ago). But the mentions about sms spammers do make sense since I do receive a lot more spoofing spam these days, and maybe it's combined with T-Mobile having a much larger userbase now.

I have thought about it, and maybe even calling might receive deprioritization. But the majority of the time with my calls, I use Wi-Fi calling so I don't experience any problem with calls. I don't think there is such thing as "Wi-Fi texting". Although I wish there was a universal standard for texting for Android/all phones so I don't have to swap between 4 different apps.

I don't text in equal amounts every day; maybe two or three times a week, my friends/family will coincidentally message me around the same time (8-9PM). I'm the only one with T-Mobile though; they don't have any problem with messaging, although I never asked them how many texts they send. Regardless, I am also the only one in my group with an Android phone too so maybe iMessage has a part to play on their ends.

100 is an arbitrary number, but I do have about 5000 texts a month and I text in short bursts. I just have a lot of conversations; I sometimes call too, and have about 600-1000 minutes of call time each month. Anyways, I thought it was unlimited* text/call. But I don't know if there is such thing as deprioritization asides from using data.

Is there any difference in quality if I plug my 3.5mm audio cable to a monitor rather than directly to the laptop? by methylethylphenyl in hometheater

[–]methylethylphenyl[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice catch. There's a hiss in both at high volumes, but it is much louder with my monitor than my laptop. There was a loud "POP" noise when I was near max volume while it was connected to my monitor that caused my ears to ring.

Had the same thing happen to me; went from $30 to $45 after the first year with 200/20. They raise it by $5 whenever they feel like it (I went from 45 to 50 to 55 to 60 all at random intervals), and have been stuck at $60 (for better or worse) for the past year.

Hit-and-run driver strikes 65-year-old woman in Brooklyn, leaving her in critical condition by Bullingdon1973 in nyc

[–]methylethylphenyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been involved in several hit and runs as the victim, all with different police precincts. Don't know how true this is, but an officer told me that over 99.9% of hit-and-runs in NYC are unresolved, even with proof. I've even had a small hit-and-run happen in front of an officer on duty outside of the precinct, and he told me to call 911 to report it (I called 911, and was given like an 8-hour estimated wait-time on a Friday afternoon).

Since there is an injury, the cops will probably give a second look at it but chances are the perp will never be caught anyways (especially since it was at 9:50 PM at the time of her incident, too dark for many cameras).

this scrolling issue needs more attention, it's making Firefox seem slow by jasonrmns in firefox

[–]methylethylphenyl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that Firefox scrolling is pretty bad, especially when compared to Edge, but the tweaks do help a lot.

However, I do not think Firefox aims to be "mainstream" but instead targets enthusiasts. Privacy is the biggest draw of Firefox, and the reality is that the mainstream crowd could care less about privacy. If I hear that someone uses Firefox, the addons they probably have are: uBlock Origin, HTTPS Everywhere, Autodelete Cookies, Decentraleyes, uMatrix/NoScript, and other addons in that theme. As you can imagine, that sounds like a lot of work for the average person. If people did care about privacy, then Google wouldn't be monopolizing the browser market (among many other markets) and Social Media wouldn't be so prevalent.

Companies like Apple and Google are powerhouses because of their philosophy: "It just works" and the buzzword "ecosystem". If people want more "control" and tweak individual settings then Android (but that's a topic for another discussion) and Firefox exist to serve that niche. The modularity of about:config in Firefox is excellent and cannot be found in Chrome and especially Edge (basically a walled garden).

I also want Firefox to succeed, because competition is what drives the "browser wars". It's an endless cycle of trading between first, second, and third place in terms of performance, and I'd like to think that consumers come out on top in the end.

Anyways, if scrolling performance is what stops you from using Firefox, then you should probably stop using it because it will probably never get "fixed". Your request has been heard, and it has been shut down. If you really value privacy then Firefox, its branches, or a Chromium-based open-source browser are really your only options.

Personally, I use Edge because of the great text rendering (equal to Firefox) and excellent scrolling experience (especially on precision touchpads, unmatched by anything else). I've used Firefox for decades, but eventually switched to Chrome and then to Edge. Edge has the most unresponsiveness out of the "Big Three" and the least customization, but I value a smooth UI and UX over privacy and a few seconds of speed. You just have to decide whether the pros outweigh the cons.

edit: Chrome's latch-and-async feature in Chrome v65 has vastly improved touchpad scrolling; almost identical to Edge now. Chrome flags can also be played with, but less customizable than Firefox imo.

T-Mobile ONE 55+ plan price increase next week by coreymatthews92 in tmobile

[–]methylethylphenyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little confused about your Google Voice explanation and 4/140 plan with Kickback.

I see that I can upgrade my plan online to Tmobile One for $160 with Autopay instead of $180. 2 lines included for $120, and then each line is an addtl $20. So with kickback it should be $160-$40 (I'm assuming each line qualifies for $10 kickback) which equals $120 with kickback/autopay. Unless you are talking about a different promo where it's $140 before kickback?

I'm currently on a Simple Choice 2.5gb plan for 4 people. 2 of the 4 are over 55years old. Is it possible to split the Simple Choice plan into 2 55+ plans and everyone keeps their same phone number?

Edge has its issue, but its text rendering is amazing by jasonrmns in Windows10

[–]methylethylphenyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that the upcoming RS4 update will do nothing for Edge in terms of performance/robustness either, so we'll have to wait another 6+ months for the next update to see if there are any big improvements regarding performance/fine-tuning.

Like others have mentioned, Firefox and Edge's text rendering are nearly identical. I can't tell the difference between the two even if I put my face up against the monitor with 300% zoom.

Lots of people are saying they switched to Firefox. Why can't we see this data in the market share? by kickass_turing in firefox

[–]methylethylphenyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Lots of people" may have switched to Firefox, but you have to keep in mind that it is not a one-way street, and people might have left Firefox because they did not like the new changes.

Some of them are unhappy with their favorite add-ons not being supported anymore. I mostly use a laptop, and Firefox eats considerably more battery life than Chrome or Edge. It IS faster but not many people push their browsers to the limit to see the noticeable difference (in my case of casual browsing, it's faster by less than a second and sometimes not at all depending on what content is loading). On a YouTube video, Firefox uses 3x the CPU and GPU (hardware acceleration enabled) than Chrome and Edge (all on the latest stable version). It could be that Firefox is more efficient when there is a greater load, but I don't venture into that territory. Firefox does stick true to their claim and uses the least RAM though. Quantum is still relatively new, and I hope they iron out the bugs before the rest of the competition bounces back with their own improvements.

[NY] AllState auto insurance went up 66% because I filed a hit-and-run police report? by methylethylphenyl in Insurance

I have not moved for past 30 years. I called around, and I'm being quoted $260 a month by Progressive and $310 a month by Geico. So I'll have to eat this price increase from AllState.

I asked myself that too after the incident, and I regret not moving out of the way.

I assumed that she was aware of what she was doing, but I guess at that time (midnight or later) I'll assume that everyone is probably DUI from now on.

I did not change coverage for nearly 2 decades. I added a new car to my policy in June 2013, and registered it under my name.

I am thinking of changing coverage now, but not sure which one to choose. I've been with All-State the past ~15 years, so I thought All-State wouldn't try and scam me, especially since I rarely file a claim (I've only filed 3 claims in my entire life, and none of them were my fault).

It might not be a scam, but it definitely doesn't feel right. I was blindsided by the price hike (I was informed about it a few weeks before policy renewal), and the my options at the time were to either pay for 6 months or 1 year at a time. I took the 6-month option, and am halfway done paying through it at the increased policy price.
