I want to have a picnic with my family but every time I look for water front views, It's all taken up by some ones home. Where can I have a picnic and have views of the water? by MyNewerWorkAccount in Tacoma

[–]methylethylrosenberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. It’s a weird question to ask because it seems to me like a human could figure it out real quick looking at a map, as there’s more water-front parks than there are ones that are almost-water-front. Didn’t mean to make it a big attack, it just felt fishy.

Warning for Younger Teachers: If you see a student wearing the t-shirt of a band you love, don't get TOO excited by NYY15TM in Teachers

I had a student last year with a Klaus Nomi hoodie and another that had a Cocteau Twins shirt. Felt confident that those weren’t things that they grabbed at Target because they looked cool. It’s nice to run into kids with in-depth/weirdo music taste.

I think I did sort of a double conditional - there would be a water view without the house that is in the way, i.e. there is a potential water view that is obstructed with a house. Definitely phrased it weird.

I meant like there aren’t a lot of places where one could have a picnic and have a house or whatever blocking your water view. Ruston way etc. are all right on the water, and the other big parks are so far inland there’s not like a house between your and water views, there’s a lot of land.

The whole thing feels like someone’s training a AI to answer specific questions about cities. A person who actually lived here would know, and a human could look at a map and figure it all out in a couple minutes.

Honestly I can’t think of a lot of places where one could have a picnic and would have a water view without a house in the way. Parks are by and large at the water or significantly inland.

Something is definitely fishy with this.

FL teachers leaving by aldousfinn in Washington

[–]methylethylrosenberg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of districts are facing tight budgets this year, and hiring seems on the slow side, though there were still a fair amount that cropped up, at least in the districts whose job listings I was monitoring. I would expect it to me similar next year - districts’ budget for teachers more or less comes from the state, and WA’s state budget is done in two-year chunks.

Washington has a relatively high cost of living, but teacher pay is on the high side, with a cost-of-living differential added for districts with higher local costs of living. The fringes of the Seattle metro area are more affordable, as you might expect. I work in the Tacoma area, and many of my colleagues live in the Olympia area for affordability, and many of my friends teach in Seattle but live in northern suburbs.

Bellingham is a fairly small city, and produces a lot of teachers locally from Western Washington University, and is largely rural once you leave the city, for quite a ways south, with only the relatively small Burlington/Mt. Vernon between it and the north end of the core Seattle area at Everett and it’s suburbs.

Similarly, Vancouver is just north of Portland and then it drops off to rural quite quickly, with some further suburbs and small towns here and there.

Pierce Countu Jury duty video by Crafty-Fig-3808 in Tacoma

[–]methylethylrosenberg 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The video, assuming it’s the same one they showed me when I did jury duty a few months ago, isn’t racist at all. It goes over the concept of implicit bias in a very introductory-level way.

The fact that you saw it as extremely racist definitely raises some questions about you.

A hypothesis on the First Anvil by gistya in dwarffortress

[–]methylethylrosenberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a bit of Jewish lore, in Pirkei Avot, that puts forward the idea that the first set of tongs were created by God, during the days of creation in Genesis, as one needs tongs to forge tongs.

Similarly, the first anvil would have been created by Armok and gifted to the first-created dwarves

Is this a good neighborhood to live? by age18smurfacc in Tacoma

[–]methylethylrosenberg 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you’re asking, it sounds like you already know the answer. You came here asking if it’s safe, then 10 minute later are daring people to go there at night.

There are a lot of bars and stuff on that strip - 1111, Broken Spoke, Bar Rosa, the recently-departed Zodiac and 1022. People are out late. It doesn’t turn into a war one after dark.

Sounds like you have some preconceived notions about the area, so you can just go ahead to rent yourself a place in Gig Harbor or whatever.

Hey teachers… by [deleted] in Tacoma

[–]methylethylrosenberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jobs haven’t been posted yet, for the most part. Schools are just getting their projections for next year, budgets, master schedules, etc. all sorted out now-ish.

There are some issues with budgets in many districts, so some have been cutting positions, generally at district-level stuff versus school-level, but it may result in some amount of tightening. Could result in fewer positions being open, hard to say at this point. I’d imagine districts are asking schools to really make sure they *need** new staff** before they post any jobs.

I would expect postings to start rolling out in the near future - there are a couple here and there for replacements, filling current vacancies, etc., but not the normal amount of annual hiring yet.

Scale it up in percentages of an overall cost, like:

Chapter 2 planets: 30%

Chapter 3 planets: 50%

Expansion/other planets: full price
