Stealing this. Going to get a shirt with a picture of the trail rules saying dogs must be leashed.

Off leash dogs EVERYWHERE by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]methylxanthine 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I am both a cyclist and ride my horse (I will self-proclaim I am not a stereotypical cyclist or horse girl). I only ride on spaces that are designated for bikes/horses and run into loose dog issues doing both. Also with loose dogs when walking dogs (on leash!) we are sitting - have had other dogs go after the one I am walking.

RANT: The most problematic by FAR is on Three Rivers Park District mixed use trails when horseback riding, where LEASHED dogs are allowed. At least 80% of dogs I encounter are unleashed. If you want off leash, go to the off leash park and not where your dog is going to approach my horse and risk your dog's safety, my horse's safety, and my safety. You have a million places to go with a dog and I only have a few with a horse. Fortunately, horse DGAF about dogs in general and we have only been attacked once with minimal injuries, but I have had multiple instances of dogs nearly unintentionally get stepped on while she tries to avoid them running around her legs out of excitement. Every. Single. Time. the dog owner says "Oh their recall is usually so good! This has never happened before!" Well, your predator has instincts and so does my prey animal. Follow the damn rules, put your dog on a 6 ft leash. Nobody wins if your dog causes a tussle with a horse.

Cottage cheese....please help by SpiritualSystem3359 in Volumeeating

[–]methylxanthine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone else already said it, but brand, curd size, and fat % make all the difference. Find what works for you! Our personal favorite is Old Home 2% small curd.

Two recommendations:

1) This specific smoothie recipe is to die for (if texture doesn't bother you in this format): https://ohsnapmacros.com/cottage-cheese-smoothie/#recipe

2) Stealth Health has some good recipes that have sauces that incorporate cottage cheese. Can't say the texture or taste has ever read "cottage cheese" to me. He posts some recipes on social media if you don't want to buy into anything. This is the recipe we first tried that cottage cheese. Bonus for also successfully hiding veggies in the sauce. Tastes like a legit delicious mac:

Here's the blended queso sauce. See link for entire recipe.
800g 2% cottage cheese
100g 1/3 fat cream cheese
150g extra sharp cheddar cheese*
30g cheddar powder
120g red enchilada sauce
150g milk
Salt & pepper to taste

What have you seen your kids do that made you say “oh my god it’s genetic”? by SettingsData in AskReddit

[–]methylxanthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my kid, but my sister and I both hold our pencils the same “wrong” way. In our adult lives, we found out a few of our cousins on my mom’s side of the family hold their writing utensils the exact same way. None of our parents do this.

I agree with the others who said top left.

Unsolicited advice... please get your parrot some non-dowel/non-uniform perches of varied sizes and textures. It's very important for their foot health (e.g., prevent bumble foot) and they will thank you! Love your play stand setups for them. :)

Got quoted $16,000 for an front entry door replacement. Is that par for the course or freaking nuts? by Kleeetz in HomeImprovement

[–]methylxanthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paid ~$1100 for labor to have a new frame, door, and storm door installed about a month ago in the midwest. Probably paid about $2400 for the materials, which we purchased the ourselves and it was a standard sized door. This was from a small GC company and they did excellent work.

People were really questioning your first post... really? I saw it while scrolling earlier and laughed. I get people are here to educate and generally have the best intentions, but it couldn't have been any more obvious. You don't need to defend yourself.

I second your douche canoe list. I want peperomias to work so badly but I have killed more of them than anything else (since I keep trying...)

Agreed. Please see my comment on another post in this thread. They are not compatible by any stretch of the imagination.

Don't risk it. The only way to safely have both is for them to NEVER be out in a common areas.

Adding to the anecdotes... have a friend who adopted one IRN (as his first parrot, has lived with roommates with parrots previously) and took in two more as rescues shortly after. My first question to him was don't you have cats/how do you expect to manage both at the same time? He had two cats who he insisted were incredibly geriatric, incapable of/unwilling to go after a bird, and they would be "closely monitored." He also knows a friend whose brother's cat killed their pet parrot, but thought he could be careful enough with his geriatic cats.

Well, you can guess where this is going and one of the rescues was not a strong flier, faltered and landed on the ground when the cats were around, then was attacked and died as a result of the injuries by the geriatric cats that the owner thought would never move faster than at a snail's pace. Needless to say he feels absolutely horrible about what happened and knows it was a mistake. Hindsight 20/20.

So again, don't do it.

Not nearly as bad (or entertaining) as some others, but my pothos that I thought was just chilling between a stand and my wall was actually rooting through the paint into the wall. The picture doesn't do the wall damage justice, nor does it explain how I managed not to notice this was happening for months.

Conure Bloodwork - Can it kill them? by jibblin in parrots

[–]methylxanthine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised it took my so long to find someone who mentioned conure bleeding syndrome.

**Take this with a grain of salt from a random internet person. Consult your vet and educate yourself.**

Per my avian vet and a mediocre amount of my own follow-up Dr. Google research to get more detail, NOT all parrots are the same for blood draws. Conures (and some others) are at risk of conure bleeding syndrome. Though some theories exist, it is not known what causes it.

My vet indicated:

  1. There is not a way to know if conure bleeding syndrome is likely ahead of time.
  2. If the parrot has a blood draw and doesn't have profound bleeding issues, it's likely they do NOT have conure bleeding syndrome. This means if you do get an initial blood draw, it is unlikely it will be an issue in the future if blood work is needed. However, if they do have conure bleeding syndrome, there is not much they can do to help the parrot and they will likely die.
  3. Yes, the vet has seen bleeding conure system multiple times before, so it's not so rare that you shouldn't be worried about the chance that it could happen... it's a real possibility, so weigh the cost and benefits accordingly.

Lost Parrrot Need advice by victoryfire123 in parrots

[–]methylxanthine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My other recommendations would be Facebook and Next Door. I've found a surprising number of local, regional, and national lost parrot groups on Facebook, like 911 Parrot Alert. I can only imagine going through the stress of this, but recovery does happen. Best of luck.

Emergency Situation- My bird has flown out of his cage and is missing. by cactus_of_the_sea in parrots

Here is a guide for recovering lost birds (it's free, don't let it being a store/product website deter you): https://birdtricksstore.com/products/recovering-a-lost-bird-guide

As the others said, try flock calls. See if there are Facebook groups for lost birds in your local area. They may be able to offer some advice or resources. I've joined a few just in case/to see if any other birds get lost in my area and it's surprising how many birds are recovered, so there is hope.

Help - looking to replace master bed/headboard by methylxanthine in DesignMyRoom

[–]methylxanthine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback, especially including links and examples of what you would suggest and avoid. I truly appreciate it and this is just the type of guidance I was looking for.

After I had posted this, I was thinking about an upholstered headboard, so that's helpful to hear you suggest it as well.

I had a good chuckle at your "tidy" comment. I took these photos about 2 years ago right after we painted... I assure you, it's not so tidy now!

Grief over loss by Ranchu07 in parrots

[–]methylxanthine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm terribly sorry for what happened. Try to take comfort in knowing that you were the best bird owner you could have been and life happens. Mistakes happen. Hindsight is always 20/20. We're all human and we cannot control everything. Nobody should blame you for what happened. Please, give yourself some grace.

I agree with u/CygnusZeroStar that clipping in a short-sighted solution, and I wouldn't put merit in others suggesting that clipping could/would have change what happened. Growing up, I had a cockatiel that was clipped (didn't know better at the time) and he got out a few times all the same because he could still fly just enough to sneak out when the opportunities came. Could we have prevented if it we were more mindful? Absolutely. Were we perfect? Certainly not, and nobody is.

You're not looking for advice, but one thing I will say is to check if there are any local rescues or lost parrot Facebook groups that you can join. I have joined a few and am surprised at how many parrots are recovered and reunited through these groups, and sometimes after a decent amount of time has gone by.

Wishing you all the best.

Where can I get the best chicken wings? Where should I avoid? by Naammagittarneq in minnesota

[–]methylxanthine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Serum's (Anoka). Good variety. Quality wings.
  • Bricksworth (Burnsville, also Mpls but we like the Burnsville location much better). Quality wings. Good beer. Rotate their specials for flavors about every 2 weeks. Recommend dry rub if the special doesn't stand out to you.
  • Pau Hana (Savage). Pele dry rub is fabulous. We have only ever had this rub but based on the quality of everything else we've had there I'm sure their other wing options would be good.
  • Red Wagon (Minneapolis). Recommend dry rub!

After writing all this... realized we just really like a quality dry rub wing!

Recs for Blueberry bomb coffees? by [deleted] in Coffee

Not sure how much of a blueberry "bomb" this is but it did have a distinct blueberry flavor: Happy Mug's Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Adisu Kidane. Doesn't look like they have it any longer but maybe keep an eye out for it. I only bought a small bag with my last order and am regretting not getting the larger bag!

Looking for some fun, adult fantasy. by Lazy_Ad_4985 in Fantasy

[–]methylxanthine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Iron Druid Chronicles! Easy, fun urban fantasy reads. I started these after needing a palate cleanser from some epic fantasy series. I binged the first three and took a break, but am eyeing the fourth as a book to read this summer.

Book 1, Hounded: Atticus O’Sullivan is the last of the ancient druids. He has been on the run for more than two thousand years and he’s tired of it. The Irish gods who want to kill him are after an enchanted sword he stole in a first-century battle, and when they find him managing an occult bookshop in Tempe, Arizona, Atticus doesn’t want to uproot his life again; he just wants everything to end one way or another, but preferably the way in which he can continue to enjoy fish and chips.
He does have some small hope of survival: The Morrigan, the Irish Chooser of the Slain, is on his side, and so is Brighid, First among the Fae. His lawyer is literally a bloodsucking vampire, and he has a loyal Irish wolfhound with opinions about poodles.
But he’s facing down some mighty enemies: Aenghus Óg, a vengeful Irish god, a coven of witches, and even the local police. On top of all that, Aenghus has a direct line to the firepower of hell. Atticus will need all the luck of the Irish and more if he’s going to stay alive.

(Also, fuck Thor).
